Where have I been? Well Sunday I got two new ones in. 4-5 weeks old. Eyes closed. They were the ones that had diarrhea on the hydration solution afther having normal poops. That has cleared up with transition to Esbilac with PB.

The boy was badly bruised and still is . Mean while I put them in with Pip after they had a dawn bath for the one flea I saw. ( and the poop mess) The girl Tess, eyes opened Tuesday and she is a spunky one. Behaves well . But now and then she and her brother Basil so this werid thing. The boy does it MUCH more than the girl. And he sleeps much more than the girl. And he eats "ok".. Anyhow... At first I thought this behavior was from their fall. (Sibling was crushed.) But every now and then they just sorta Hunch over .. They will be standing but look like they are going to groom their feet or something.. But just stand there head down Is this normal?.

I am thinking the boy may have pnumomia or something. No clicking. But he is far more lethargic than his spunky Sister. I have batril on the way ( fish flox 250 mg) and when it gets here if he is still like this I may ask for dosage help. But at this time.. he could just still be sore from his fall on Sunday morning. His eyes opened on Wednesday.

This leads me to the next question. As I said just before their eyes opened I put them in with Pip. He is fine with them as long as they do not try to nurse him.

Yesterday I found a wound on Pip Just between his shoulder blades. This is exactly where I had to give him his Baytril injections via the Vet. There is some mild hair loss around there. Is this a medicinal thing or is this a play bite? They do seem to play.. I would think if they hated each other they would not sleep together. Tess and Pip play like kittens batting at each other and growling a little.. then they may just curl up and sleep. I assume this is good right? How can I tell fighting from play fighting or rough housing?

NEXT.. MONDAY NIGHT.. I got six pinkies in that my rehabber had for a few days... The oldest one looks like she " could be " four weeks old tops. BUT her eye was already opened !! ONLY HER RIGHT EYE.. and as of today( Friday). How can I tell if she has sight in this eye? Can this premature opening lead to blindness? She only weighs about 65 grams and was 55 when I got her.

The other five pinkies are doing " Ok" They had been on fox valley ( Dunno what number it came to me with them in a zip lock baggie.. ) and I transitioned them back to Esbilac with PB. Two of them have a milk line issues. One is worse than the other... And I thought I was going to lose Pepita ( pumpkin seed) last night.. She has some fur but only weighs about 20 grams. But her engorged belly remained soft and I put her isolation so her siblings would not pop her ( esp the big 65 gram one with one eye.. they were all together and It was suggested to me to keep them so... ) ( It was my fault .. I forgot to check the line before I fed her.. Bit crazy here with nine squirrels.) And it was nearly gone overnight. LOTS of soft but formed white poop. I massaged and stimulated often. Never will forget that again!!!

I will try to check back to answer often.. But .. I am feeding squirrels what seems like all day.. ROFLOL.. I am INSANE. But its getting better.

Will try to get them all up in the nursery later.. but again.. feeding.. washing.. feeding .. washing.. I have cancelled my life for the next two weeks.. ROFLOL.

Yeah. It's getting there. There is a groove going now. But feeding 6 takes a lot of time . And this is my first rehab season after being away for 20 years.

Pip was my first squirrel .. Yep. I just needed a sibling for him HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA

But I enjoy it most of the time😅. Had a few nervous breakdowns the first 48 hours .

I don't know how you turn so many out in an hour, it takes me a half an hour to nurse one. What's your secret?:imp

LOL - I just love that little icon..... makes me laugh every time I see it. :crazy

I would have to say my secret is 7 years of rehab exp and the four paws nipple --they are The Bomb!
IMO these nipples are more like moms teats than the long nipples that most people use... and I use
a push one wait two seconds push one wait two seconds movement with the syringe (1 & 3 cc sizes)

..... there you go --thats MY SECRET at FEEDING SQUIRRELS!! (shhhhhhhh, dont tell)

Four paws nipple.......I really thought at first that was some new kind of thing with four nipples to feed four babies at once....hmmmm, maybe I should get to working on that invention.

My secret weapon is my 17 and 13 yr olds. They help with baby care. I know some may not agree with that - kids helping... but the Rehabber I got them from was not stimulating the baby's and TOLD ME NOT TO. AND .. I got my start at age ten or 11. So anyway.. 5 2-3 weekers and one four weeker. I know the Rehabber was also overwhelmed.. She turns out large numbers.. So I am not judging her methods.. Just that I can not stand milk and pee/poo covered babies. She had 16 squirrels and I dunno how many coons and a skunk or two. Also miracle nipple and push pause. We thought they had mange or something.. It took us an hour for 5 of us to clean them off that night and they stunk.

My other weapon is my 12 yr old son who has volunteered to do the dishes for the next two weeks as long as I pay him in Hersey bars.

And my 11 yr old who is also an awesome stimulator and face wiper.. And general cuddler.

That said I am caring solely for the older ones.. And they still take time. Ages 5-8.

Update Basil the lazy boy is seemingly coming alive. So it may have just been bruising. He is a moose now at 115 and sis is catching up at 100.
Pip is 150 this am.

So really still worried about that premature eye girl named Sunshine.

I am all for kids helping and learning the ways of rehabbing... love of animals teaches them so much more.
My 6 year old granddaughter helps me with my babies and has been doing so since she was 2 years old.
...... she is my future rehabber in training, and I am PROUD of HER!!

I am also interested to what others have to say about the eyes opening. I have two that came in about two weeks ago at 20 grams and they both opened eyes last week at around 34 grams. These two aren't even fully furred at all and still have that "slick" look. They were severely emaciated since they had been on human baby formula for a week but they are gaining steady. Curious as to why these babies opened eyes way too early.

Mine is " mostly" furred. But no where as big as Pip my grey ( whose eyes opened just a tad late - I know cause I had him since he had his cord )

Then the twins came on Sunday and their eyes were closed.. they were very furred and I expected them to open any day. They did about 3 days later.

But then there is Sunshine... who is soooo tiny. Someone mentioned something called Piney squirrels. But I would not know one if it bit me.

In fact I have NO idea what the twins are either.. maybe reds? Maybe Greys with a lot of red. But I know Pip is a grey and he is Silver as silver can be.

I have pics of my babies in the Nursery forum under "Eight Is Enough!". The big litter of 3 are four times the size of the litter of two and eyes opened a week apart. The little ones tails are starting to come in but the body hair is still the same as it was in the pic taken last week. Just puzzling.

I'll go look. Here she is with her "buddies". She weighs about 60 gm. She was fourty on Monday when I got her. Only the right eye is opened. I'll go look at yours.

Just weighed mine and one is at 50g and the other weighs 44g. Yours looks like she has more hair than mine do. Both of mine opened both eyes on the same day within just a couple of hours of each other.

The average squirrel opens its eyes around 4 weeks old, but here in Central Florida I have seen them go as long as 6 weeks, therefore, I generally tell people baby squirrels will open their eyes any where between 4 & 6 weeks old. I have four natural siblings that just turned 4 weeks old and the three males all opened their eyes with in days of each other while the female took another five days to open hers.

Is it possible that your baby squirrels are actually older than you think they are and they are just small for their age due to being severely emaciated, therefore, undeveloped? How long have you had the babies --in weeks? They could be 4 weeks old, or around that age, therefore, the opening of the eyes would be right on track. FYI --some babies will not grow fur right away if they are slow to develop to due nutritional problems.

I have had them for a week and the finder had them for a week before that. They came in to me at 20 grams. I got them the same time I got another litter of 3 that were around 74 grams. That litter was fully furred and opened their eyes just a half a week before the two puny ones did. It may just be the nutritional deficiencies. I'll just keep on feeding and loving on them. They are too sweet with their little sleepy eyes.
