Last night I got a call from a local rehabber who was picking up 3 babies about 3 weeks old who had maggots. I went over and dosed 1/4 tab per baby and the rehabber picked all of the maggots off of them. They were COVERING these babies only they were under the fur. A flea comb brought up dozens with each comb...:eek
I just spoke to her and she said that the babies are listless and seem to be trying to "crawl off of the heat as if they want to die". She is concerned about the use of Capstar. I assured her that I have used it with those who are as young as hers, but I want to be certain that none of you have ever experienced this with babies. One of them has already passed (there were 3) and the others don't seem to be doing well.
She has been feeding FV 32/40 and I told her to change to Esbilac with probiotics. They are taking very little since she got them, as in drop by drop, so I told her she didn't have to worry about transitioning.
Anyone got any ideas for me to impart to her? She is really upset and worried...:sad

Capstar is notoriously mild and very very hard to overdose. I don't think it was that. Many babies' systems become so overwhelmed by those maggots that they are anemic and can't recover. Best thing is hydration and nourishment....they may even need another dose of Capstar in a day or so to make sure all internal eggs are dead.
My BF yells at me because I fly around the apartment like a demented Ninja when a fly gets in here, smacking and smashing until I kill it. I try to explain to him that they are the creation, the minions, and the servants of Satan himself.....BF rolls his eyes. :shakehead

I did give her additional Capstar tablets in case she needed to dose again. I neglected to say that she said they have developed odd breathing. I told her that the maggots could have even gotten into their lungs. She has started an AB in case that has happened. These little ones need prayers...:Love_Icon

Unfortunately true. :(
Saying a prayer for these babies...

Massive die off of maggots and other "pests" can release toxins which can cause death of the "host". Same thing goes for wormers and worms. A sudden massive die off and decomposition of the dead things can cause more problems than the original "pests".

Poor babies. Capstar is amazing and I think, hard to overdose. Thing is, if you see them external there's as many INTERNAL. Any AB's specific to that sort of thing?

What she has is Clavamox so that is what she is able to give.

No, no! These are itty bitty babies...they fall out of the nest to the ground and almost immediately flies find them and lay their eggs on their bodies. Since they are helpless little things they cannot bat them away or get away from them, and the maggots develop, climb into body cavities and it is just awful!
This would never happen to an adult squirrel! Now if one had a big injury that attracted flies it could get them in the injury, but not like what is being described here.
If you are looking to protect your squirrel from fleas, mites, etc., you would be better applying a drop of Revolution between his shoulder blades directly on the skin, but it has to be done every 30 days which may be problematic once he is released...

That many maggots have surely depleted the babies by sucking up the fluids in their bodies. We know how fast a baby can go downhill. Capstar is made of nicotine, and gives the body/heart a temporary "rush". I wouldn't worry too much that you did something wrong, if you perhaps DID give a little too much, then you probably just sped up the inevitable, and ended suffering .. poor babies :(
