Akron is too far away. I'm trying hard with them to get them to thrive.

Okay, are you still giving the liquid Esbilac? What you want is the powdered puppy formula that says "with probiotics and prebiotics" on the top edge of the can. I used honey water every hour and a half or so on my baby. I just kept her warm and hydrated without formula for several feedings. How are they now? Take a warm cloth and wipe the fuzzies off. I had to do the same thing because they were in a new cat bed that she acted like a lint brush in.:shakehead

I got the one with the bloated belly to drink the apple juice and water mixture. The other one won't drink anything now! :-(

Go easy on the apple juice with a bloated belly, but flavoring water with it is okay. The other one is not bloated, is it possible she is dehydrated? Even if you have to use just a drop of water at a time, she needs hydration. I know it is so darned scary! Just take deep breaths and be steady with them.

Bo is drinking more of the fluid apple juice mixture. Luke just took a bit but they are having a hard time regulating temp.

They can't regulate their temp at this age...you have to keep checking and moving...adjusting :dono it takes time to get it right...heating pad just right...fleece piled enough...not too much....just enough...if they are not warm they have a better chance of bloating...if they are cool when you pick them up...don't try and feed...lay them on the heating pad, on a piece of fleece...when they are warm pick the fleece up with them in it to help hold the heat. It's very important that you don't feed them when they are cool:thumbsup

I got all the fuzz off of them. Trying to hydrate with the apple juice and water mixture! The skinny one did take some more of that a few mind ago. They are on my lap on the heating pad now. Going to go give the little one some more water.

Would an enema be an option? Perhaps use a tiny gauge catheter and only a tiny amount of warm water? I've never had to use one with a squirrel but it have done plenty on kittens before. thoughts? Maybe a drop of mineral oil orally? I'm just throwing out ideas.:shakehead:thinking:shakehead

Ya. Know this is going to sound ridiculous but I am gonna out it out there. These bloated guys they are gonna die right !?
Pardon my blunt ness and bear with me .. I had an idea

That's why I keep hearing bloat is nearly impossible . I know they are tiny.. Esp these guys. But I was laying here and thought too bad they don't make microscopic suppositories.

That thought led me to what about inserting a tiny rubber nipple . I saw some online .. With loads if vasoline . http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/rehab-supplies/nipples-and-feeding-bottles/mini-nipples-package-of-10.html like these!

The make them for human kids. http://www.fridababy.com/shop/windi-for-gas-relief/

Which is sorta where I got the idea .. How to apply this to tiny squirrels? I mean I know you would have to be soooooo careful . And I would be scared as all get out to do that but.. What ifit worked

Exactly! Last ditch effort . Have these thing been tried on say bloated 4 weekers?
They sound like they need an enema or a suppository.

The body should react to something stimulating it. But for some reason their bodies are just of letting it go . Is it gass? Backed up stool ? Inability to open the rectum ?

I truely apologize if I sounded course or crazy I get thatwaywhen I fell helpless. With an infection you can give meds
With bots you can remove them and flush. This bloat sounds like .. Well hopeless.

Seriously - between your enema and my wind relieve idea I think we are on to something . The ASPCA site talks about bloat in dogs How Is Bloat Treated?

Depending on your dog’s condition, a veterinarian may take an X-ray of the abdomen to assess the stomach’s position. The vet may try to decompress the stomach and relieve gas and fluid pressure by inserting a tube down the esophagus.

So squirrel bloat seems to be in the lower GI . Or maybe not lower .. But I am more comfortable with enemas and fart straws than stomach tubing ..

But then possums get tube fed. There must be a catheter small enough for what were talking about.

They were still fighting this morning. Bo was squirming all over the place. Like was a bit more still and not wanting to eat. SO I got them to a rehab person this morning about 10:30 Ohio time.
I can call to check on them in a few days. I will try to find this thread again and post what happened. I've been thinking about these little guys too! Sure hope they grow up to live a happy life. Luke I do believe also has a bum front leg but I know they can overcome that stuff! Maybe he can stay at a place that he will be cared for and not out in the wild! ;-)
Will try to keep you all posted if they tell me anything.
Thanks so much for all your help. I'm thinking about learning about rehab and so I can learn under a licensed rehabber!

I think your hooked now on squirrel love. Ohio requires a training class. I am on the list . The date and time for this year has not been set.

The place will be determined by how much interest there is and what area they are from. So if you get on the list too then we have a highe chance of it being in the Cinci Dayton area. :)

This session is required for all new permit holders. In Ohio you have training to be a catagory one permit holder . That covers NOn Rabies Vector animals- squirrels, rabbits, woodchucks . ( or you can sub permit under an already licensed permit holder ... But.. To get your own permit you have to have this training session )
After 3 years you can apply for avian and catagory 2 - which covers your birds,( Cept protected birds) and raccoons, possums and more. White tailed deer fawns are by special permission only which I think stinks.. And coons are very hard to place in Ohio.

But we would all start with catagory one animals. Below is the info. They can send you your packet now though.

The final schedule and registration will be posted on the OWRA website by the end of August.

It is actually illegal to rehab deer in the state of Ohio, which does indeed stink! Raccoons are also illegal in some counties (mine is one of them). But your summary is correct for category 1 and 2. Rabies vector is actually another permit in addition to category 2 which you have to take another class for and get rabies pre exposure shots for. Main thing category 2 allows you to do is take in opossums. Then the bird permit is federal permit.
