I know this is The Squirrel Board but was hoping someone might have some insight about a massively pregnant deer that has been hanging around our yard this evening. We have lots of deer visit us here to nibble on bird and squirrel leftovers so we see a few cute, spotted babies every summer. As far as I can tell most of the deer gave birth around 4-6 weeks ago but one large female is still pregnant and is now laying in our front yard looking at us with her big brown eyes. She doesn't appear to be in any discomfort but is odd for her to lay down by our front door. She has been there since about 7:30 and just lays there looking at us if we approach. Any suggestions? Anything we can do to help her if she has issues. The size of her stomach and the late birth has us concerned. Thanks in advance.

As concerning as that seems, I would not disturb her, wouldn't want to stress her. I have seen a video recently (not here) where someone taped a momma deer giving birth in their yard. The person was fairly close by too. Maybe this momma picked your yard for this joyous occasion.

Thanks, she has actually moved off to the woods. My wife saw a brand new born deer and mom behind our barn a couple of years ago. We'll probably be seeing some cute new babies around soon!

Well Momma has lost some weight. She came out of the woods this evening with her little cutie-pie in tow. I can't recall ever seeing one born so late. She must have got pregnant in late winter/early spring. We see most of the babies in May! Here are a couple of videos (quality lacking, I'm working on it).

Wow! It is very late for her. I hope that baby will be ok. Maybe they'll hang around and you can help them out this winter. At least you a bit more southerly and the winter won;t be so bad.

Yes we don't have to worry about harsh winters here so the little one should be fine. Hopefully mom won't go in heat again (they usually start in mid/late Sep. here). Maybe the bucks will leave her alone with such a young child?

Oh yes! Thank you so much for sharing :grouphug I love deer...we use to have a small herd here...but now I'm lucky if I see two...which I did see and feed this winter...the bucks will not mess with her....because she will not come into season with a baby:Love_Icon She may have lost her spring baby...then came back into season. Nature is efficient :shakehead I'm more worried about hunting season :dono some yahoo will shoot her with a young fawn...they certainly aren't concerned about such things in my rural community :(

Thank you Nancy. I tend to take this place for granted but know I shouldn't. Thanks for reminding me.
Hi sweeper, we have a large, healthy deer population here even with SC's liberal hunting laws. Every fall we get to see bucks sparring and chasing does (generally acting silly). We also get to see some cute babies in the spring (or late summer in this case). Hopefully your population will rebound. Maybe they have moved on due to a new or better food source nearby?

Beautiful! The little leap the fawn did! :Love_Icon So sweet. Thanks so much for sharing. That one is a very tiny baby - I've never had the opportunity to see one so young.
:thankyou
It's funny how worried we all get about every little wild thing even when all is fine. Pregnant deer mama is saying, Whaaat? Do you see the size of my belly? I'm laying by your front porch for a rest. I KNOW you are a friendly hoomin, DUH. You think I'm dumb? I'm a DEER not a human! :shakehead Stop giving me hives with all that worrying you like to do!

Yes, thank God a few made it through hunting season!! Unless it has changed around here Deer season opens on August 15th!! Doesn't sound like much fun to me, slogging through a hot, humid, mosquito infested swamp to kill one of these beautiful creatures!! :(

It was a busy morning in squirrelville! Maybe the animals could sense the heavy rain on the way. It is pouring now!

Some of the deer mama's are bringing their babies out! Maybe because of our mild winters we see babies well into the fall here... :)
