He's a whopping 11 grams. I got his sister early this morning and told the nice young man to keep an eye out for others. Got home from lunch and there was a box at the door. This little guy was in it. Young man called and said he found him same place as the other baby. He has a big chunk out of one side of his neck and a wound on his back leg. He fell onto pavement so he had bits of grit in the wound on his neck and is all bunged up. He's finally warm and I got a few drops of fluids in him. He's wigglin around and squealing so there's life there. Put Sulfadene in the owies and some of the grit has sloughed off. The injury to his neck is awful. You can see the connective tissue in there. Please spare a few TSB prayers for this little baby. I've named him Chance because with love, care and prayers there's always a chance. Please chime in with what I can do to get this sweetie on the road to healing.

Oh dear. Have you gotten him cleaned up and cleaned and irrigated the wound? Use warm water so he doesn't get chilled. I have no experience with one this small but I would get the wound all cleaned up, dab a bit more silvadene on it and I would bed him down on some fleece that is flat folded so he can't get under it with nothing over him and plenty of bottom heat to compensate. That way he won't have fleece stuck to the wound. I would also give some additional hydration - an open wound like that is gonna weep. Ugh.

ohhhh poor precious tiny one! CL, I agree with everyone else: hydrate and irrigate...silvadene is very very good, of course. These pinkies are amazingly tough and resilient and they want to live so much, but that is a terrible wound. Most important to not let it abcess. Fingers & toes crossed & prayers coming! :Love_Icon

I see pus in the neck wound, so I personally think AB's are needed. I just don't know how to dilute for one this young. Jackie gave me some really diluted TMP-SMZ for the flyer, so I know they can be dosed. What AB's do you have on hand? The TMP-SMZ worked wonders and I have already stopped using it for him. Prayer are out to your Chance! He certainly does deserve a chance!

Working on getting the grit out of those wounds. They look painful so going slow. Letting the Silvadene flush out the gunk. That neck wound Is weeping quite a bit and bits of grit are coming to the edges where they can be flicked off without disturbing an already nasty owie. He's in my hand on the side that is bruised but no open wounds. My hand is in a fleece pouch so he's warm but can't overheat. He's taken a small amount of fluids but must hurt so I doubt he's hungry.

Me too! Everything was stacked against him and I REALLY want him to beat the odds. I don't even know if he'd be releasable. Gotta get him healed up before that's an issue

Praying and praying for you and him.

Have you given him any pain meds?

Nothing so far. I have Tramadol and some Metacam. I can get infant ibuprofen. I'm just worried about his next hours of survival.

Hi Duckman. That white gunk is the Silvadene. It DOES look like pus but thank heavens the wound is fresh so if we can keep any infection out, maybe the little guy will make it. He's wigglin in my hand. Gonna go give him some more fluids. He actually smacked so hopefully he wants something.

Praying for you and this little one.
Can you get any telfa pads? They are coated gauze that doesn't stick to wounds when it seeps fluid. Then if the little one lays on it it's ok.
We use them in hospitals as a dressing sometimes.
I would irrigate that wound. The quicker you remove any bacteria the better.
That Silvadene is a miracle worker.
Sending light and love...

As of 10:00 PM our little Chance is still with us. He's pink and warm. He eats some and pees some. I think his little arm on the injured side is involved. He wants to knead like any baby but that one arm just doesn't seem to lift. I think he was attacked by a bird of some sort. That crater in his neck looks like it was gouged out by a beak or talon. Poor baby has been through a lot in his very short life. I'll call The vet first thing and see if I can get some SMPTMZ and more cream. Julie is taking the babies on Wednesday. Hubby is going to a conference and I'm looking at property. We'll be back Monday night late. Kensington goes to camp too. Hopefully Chance will be on the mend by then.

So far those TSB prayers are working. He's not an eager eater but some goes in and some comes out. I tell ya if I had the kind of injuries he does I wouldn't want to eat either. I got a good look at his little leg. It has an awful gash. The foot is warm and pink tho so I'm hoping the circulation is good. Poor sweet little guy. I do have Metacam but have no idea how to dose it for a critter so small.

I was told about the will of pinkies and didnt really understand how strong it is untill seeing it. You are doing a great thing by helping such a little warrior fulfill his destiny. God bless for all you do every day to make the world a better place... :Love_Icon:grouphug:grouphug

CL, i would personally hold off on pain meds, because he IS so tiny, unless you really see signs of distress. Since pinkies assume mamma is there at all times, when they are truly in pain they let you know it. If Chancey-boy eats a bit and sleeps a bit and poops ok then I would refrain from putting chemicals into such a tiny little body. :tilt You're doing great with him! :Love_Icon

I dreaded checking in this thread because I was pretty sure that such terrible injuries on such a tiny little body could only have one outcome.:(

But you did give this little squirrel baby a chance, a name and warmth, comfort and love before he passed.

Gods Speed Chance.
