Hi SB family,

I just recently rented out a beach bungalow for the summer that I am thinking about buying. I brought Jax (Southern Flying Squirrel) along with me for the summer and unfortunately have noticed that I have a lot of ants and other insects around and in his cage. I tried to use natural repellents such as cinnamon sticks for ants and even spray alcohol or lemon around the bungalow, as well as, insect killer in places away from Jax cage. I sealed the whole house as well, but they still seem to be attracted to his food and/or litter. Does anyone have in suggestions on what to do to keep these pests out of sight. I was curious if changing his diet or even the time that I feed him would help. Also is there any other cage or even pans that I can get to keep food and urine inside of the cage instead of on the floor, that way it makes for easy clean up. I am open to any suggestions. If I cant control this insect problem, I may have to leave him at work and see him during the day and feed him before I leave. I just really didn't want to have to leave him behind. He seems to really like the house since he has full run over it. Please help me resolve this!

Downy Dryer Sheets are GREAT for keeping bugs and ants away...... just tie
one sheet each at the bottom of each cage leg and the ant will stay gone.

I am willing to try anything. Thanks for the tip :) Ill let you know how it goes. I just cant stand the hundreds of ants around the cage. If I dont win this battle with these ants I wont be staying here anymore lol!

have you tried baby powder? It worked like a charm for me. The ants won't cross it. I got lavender scented powder so it smelled nice too :)

I cannot vouch for the baby powder or the corn starch, but I can for the Downy Dryer Sheets
as I have personally used them to keep the ants away when I had a couple of Sugar Gliders.

Dryer sheets work great for fruit flies as well! Use them in the bar in the fall when they are always a problem.:thumbsup

Or you can spray around the exterior of the house--the big guns if all else fails.

Diatomaceous earth has ben used for decades as a pet-safe ant and roach repellent and killer. It works in two ways: the DE is like millions of broken glass shards to the ants or bugs and they know that from initial contact with it and stay away. If they insist on walking through it, their exoskeletons gets damaged and they dry up. So if you border with a line -uninterrupted- of DE they WILL NOT cross it.

Okay cool ill give that a try as well. I need to get rid of these ants. There are hundreds of them. The smallest crumb on the floor attracks thousands of them everywhere. Forget about Jax food (fruit veggies and squirrel blocks)!
