Please look at this picture.
This squirrel was released this past Sunday (two days ago).
Prior to her release she spent about 2-3 weeks in a release cage.
So, two days after her release she shows up with this bulge on her left side.
What can this be? (that appeared literally within a day or two?)
What does it look like to you?
Depending on what this can be, what should be the course of action?
One thought - a bite
Another thought - an abscess? Could an abscess spring up so quickly within a day, literally?
Could it be that during her weeks in the RC some sort of infection was slowly brewing (invisible) and turned into an abscess within a day, or so?
Could it be that she ate something on her first day in the wild that affected her gum/tooth/something?
Iwonka is on her way there right now to examine.
So, it will be very useful to know all possible options the sooner the better, so she could start treatment.
TY!

Check her teeth, check for bot fly entrance/breathing hole.

Thank you for being so quick, Nancy!<3
Will pass this on.
HOpefully, it's nothing serious!

Could be botfly, remember Baby's was on the head ...right over her eye:( Good call Nancy...that sure would be a lot easier than teeth :eek Good luck Iwonka and Astra :Love_Icon

Other possibilities include infection/abscess or possibly a bite (insect if no visible bite or from squirrel or another animal if there are teeth marks).

Just want to add: if it IS an abcess and not a bot, best results with facial abcesses in rodents have been from treatment with clindamycin OR Penn-G. Baytril and SMZ do nothing.

Is clavamox one that helps with these facial abscesses?

thank you all.
So, so far:
1. it's not a bot (no opening or anything like that)
2. does not seem to be teeth related.
It was hard to really check the insides of the mouth - Iwonka tried and she had help, too, but it was difficult.
But whatever she got to see didn't look like it was teeth-related (hope not).
3. She did notice a scratch/smth on the squirrel's lips.
So, could this be an inflammation from the scratch?
The pic is attached.
For now all Iwonka has is Amoxy.
So, to prevent infection/stop it in its tracks, the baby will go through a course of amoxy. HOpefully, that will take care of the bulge/inflammation, if that's what it is.
ALL input is welcome - please if you see something in the pic that no one else sees, SharE!

Astra, what is this?
Why does it almost look like a cat nail, or
a tooth to me?

The only thing I found is this injury (probably done with a claw) with swelling.
Thank you ! :Love_Icon

Does she only have one bottom tooth?
OR are my eyes tricking me again? :dono

:D Nancy - looks like all these photos just keep tricking you :)
It does look like a tooth growing out of her chin through fur, but no, it is not - it must be an optical illusion :grouphug
