Hey everyone,

We have been feeding out wild greys, and our birds for quite a while now. Now that summer is on it's way we want to wean them off. One of the reasons is because of the amount of damage we have on our porch. They have literally chewed up some of our railings, which we are going to eventually have to replace. Also they just chewed up our phone line outside and now have the phone company coming to replace it. We love our little guys, but we have to stop feeding them due to all the damage that is happening. Also, since my husband will be possibly getting a different job in the next year, we may be moving. I have to wean them anyhow. I am not sure how to go about this though. This morning I gave them their regular feed( we give assorted plain nuts like almond, pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts). We literally started with like 4 squirrels and now have at least 12 to 15! Well after I fed the this morning, they polished off the nuts and 20 minutes later they are at the back door begging again. I tried to ignore them but I have one that will crawl all over our door and will not leave until we feed her. Also we have others than will crawl on the porch rails and look in at us begging I guess.

I know there is no easy way to do this, but I just want some opinions on how to best go about it. I feel like such a crud though. I love them and feel so bad when they beg :(. But I know I have to do it, especially if we are going to have move. I have to replace a couple of the railings and wash the whole porch due to the pee pee they make on the porch. Just want some advice on how to properly go about doing this.. Thanks.

Set up feeders away from the home and stop feeding them on your porch. I have a whole crew here, so know (you should see all the screens on my porch, have to replace them all too. But no wood or lines ever chewed.)

Or go cold turkey, and stop feeding all together, and use a squirt gun to chase them off. (I know that sounds awful, but if you are moving you need to stop them from doing it, or the new owners will do something more drastic when they move in!) Unfortunately you have trained them (and they in turned told all their 'friends' about the goodies). So you may need to put tough love into play.

Feed them further from the house. But put out other veggies also. Just make a pile of nuts and stuff further out . May have to do this at least twice a day.

Thank you both for the replies! Ok, I will start feeding them away from the house and cut it back a little every day. Pappy 1264, you are right, I did kind of train them in a way, so it is my fault, not theirs. I hold no anger towards them at all in terms of my porch or screens. They are just being squirrels. But you are right, I will start doing this now so by the time we move, I will have already stopped feeding for quite a few months... Thanks for the advice. This is gonna be hard because I love the little guys :(
