I have been taking care of a baby squirrel that fell from a 50 ft palm tree since mid march. He opened his eyes about one week later. I am figuring he is about 15 weeks old. I began introducing Woodrow to the back yard about a month ago. About 2 Weeks ago I began to let him out of his cage in the morning and in the evening he would be waiting at my back door at night and I would let him into his cage until the next morning. He has been eating and drinking all along very well. He is playful, energetic, happy and loves the outdoors. About 8 days ago he stopped coming to the door at night. In the morning he would show up and eat and drink, play with me, then take off to climb trees, totally acting normal. We have received heavy rainfall during the night so this morning when he showed up soaking wet (still acting completely normal) I put him in his cage so he could eat and drink without being in the rain. While I was getting him his food I noticed that there was a pinkish stained circle on his paper towel. I stayed watching him and saw him urinate and it was blood. He had a droplet hanging from his penis that was bright red. It scared me because I had never ever seen any blood on Woodrow. I continued to watch him and he acted completely normal ate normally drank normally, he even took a nap. It was pouring rain so I kept him inside for about 4 hours. During that time I continued to check on him and he seemed totally fine. As soon as the rain stopped I took him outside and opened his cage. He got out walked around ate a little bit more then jumped to his favorite tree and took off as he now normally does.I haven't seen him since about noon (8hours ago) but that is normal and expect to see him tomorrow. I don't know what I should do for him. Is his life in danger since he is urinating blood?

What breed is he? Foxers will have a reddish orangeish tint to their pee. It is something f4om their orange bones. Is it blood red. If I was you I would get him in hus cage and keep him there. If it is an injury the running and jumping can't be good for him. JMHO. A pro will be here soon to help.

He is a little Foxer and he is adorable. A pro should be along shortly. It is the holidays and many are with friends and family today.

Certain foods can cause them to pee red; acorns, cranberries, even raspberries. Are any of those available to him outside? If not, it's also possible that he injured himself internally somewhere and had some bleeding. This may or may not be life-threatening, but it is good to keep an eye on him for awhile!

I'm not sure how many acorns are in the trees. I haven't given him any raspberries lately only sweet potato, blueberries, peaches and cashews.

I would suggest a precautionary course of Antibiotics, just in case it is a UTI. He isn't showing signs of distress in the pictures, so I don't think he has any serious abdominal injuries. You will probably have to keep him in during the AB treatment, but otherwise, it looks like you did this Foxer justice!!

Can you catch his pee on a white paper towel? A foxer has reddish urine at times. Not sure I would start ABs until you know for sure. Fox squirrels have reddish orange bones and it leeches out and comes out in the urine. Kazees will come out with a pinkish tint at time's.

Do fox squirrels begin to release this blood
Red colored urine at a particular age? You
Will probably think I'm nuts but, I actually
Could have sworn he was potty trained.
I know that this color of urine is new because
Just about all the time I had him in his cage at night
He wouldn't soil his bedding. He would come in at
About 8pm and I would take him outside. At about 6:30am
He was soooooooo clean. He had access to plenty
Of fresh water fruit nuts food and I never could believe
How clean he was. Once or twice I would see a circle
Of wet but it never appeared to have a color or odor.

I have had Winkers for almost a year and I have never seen blood colored urine from her. All the other foxers I have rehabbed (and released) never had blood colored urine anytime in the last 4 years. I still think a mild AB (like SMZ-TMP) wouldn't hurt, but at this point, I don't think waiting would hurt either. If the red gets darker or the urine starts getting a foul smell, then he will need AB's immediately, as that would indicate a UTI.

Uroporphryin. Check it out , most rodents have it. Foxers have so much it comes out in urine. Not always not every time.

Can you take a pink of the urine? My gray has bloody looking urine lately. There's orange spots on the floor. When I wipe it up and look at the napkin it no longer resembles blood. I figure it is something he's eating.

I wasn't able to catch him urinating at all today. He spent about 2 hours with me on the porch then I had to leave to pick up my kids from school. He is jumping around , eating and drinking like normal. He doesn't seem like he is in any pain at all. He lays on his back so I can tickle his tummy so I am going to assume it must have been acorns or it's what several others have reported seeing in foxers. I have so many cute videos and pics to share is there a place on this website to do that? Thank you in advance

If you would like you can go to the welcome section and introduce you and your squirrel to the whole board. We all love pics them more the better. Also good for future if you have a problem we have some thing to look backon to compare to. Always good idea. You know what they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Get to clicking.

There is indeed a specific place on TSB where you can post photos and videos of your handsome little one. Click the "Breed Specific, Pet Squirrels and UK Information" category then click "Breed Specific" then click "Fox Squirrel Forum". If you need help on resizing any photos, you can find instructions by scrolling down on the main board until you reach the thread "How do I upload a picture" under the FAQ section.

I am glad to hear he is not in pain when he goes potty and that you think the color of the tinkle is likely from diet. It is heartbreaking to hear an animal squeak in pain from an UTI. (One of my daughter's hamsters had an UTI.) Fortunately if he did have one, it could be treated with antibiotics in which animals typically start to recover quickly once on meds.
