A woman just brought me this bird, torrential rains destroyed nest.
She sat it at bottom of tree all day, no birds around, no mom.
What is it? Besides finding a bird rehabber, what do I do for it??
I know squat!!

I believe that is a sparrow.

Mealworms :) That baby should be flying soon, but yes Psychobird should have a lot more info.

I usually call our "bird lady"...:grin2

Meanwhile, put birdie in a box with lots of air holes
and if you can manage to poke holes to hold a stick to make a sort of perch..
birds like to sleep on a perch with their little heads tucked in their armpit ( it's so cute)
hopefully little bird will sleep until morning
& by then you will have more experienced advice.

Best wishes !!

BTW - mealworms or crickets might be a nice breakfast

A perch like Saverywood described is ideal but if not possible you can use a heavy bowl instead. Line it with paper towels to catch the poop. A shallow dish of water might be a nice offering too. Like a spaghetti sauce jar lid, very shallow.

That bird is a fledgling, You can tell because he is fully covered in feathers. Fledglings very often fall out of the nest just before they learn to fly. The mother bird will care for him even on the ground. If you know where he was found it would be best to take him back. If you can find the tree he fell from (which will likely be right above or not too far from where he found) take him back and place him back on the ground. Wait some distance from him and listen for the mother's call after he begins to cry or she may call and he may then cry. She will come back to him. He will "nest" on the ground for maybe 5-7 days before he learns to fly. Birds can not smell so don't worry about the mom not taking him back because you have handled him. :grin3

But not tonight, right? Baby needs shelter for the night, right? But first thing in the morning, yes Mom will come.

He is a fledgling house finch and put him back on a branch or in a bush near where you found him

Does his foot stay clenched like that all the time? If so I take back what I said about putting him back. He needs to go to a rehabber ao he can get a "shoe" made to unclench that foot

I did take notice of that...
He can spread it out when you pick him up and sit him down again but within
a few seconds he draws it back up.
I wasn't the one who found him. He was found by a woman early morning
who sat him under tree where nest was washed out in hopes mom would
come. No other other birds came around, he was out there all day, same spot.
This evening she called her daughter who lives next door to me and she brought
him to me. I do know a bird rehabber I've used in the past but she's a distance from
where I now live. Fortunately I know Trysh (redwuff) and she works with a bird
rehabber not far from me. :woot
He has heat, has taken a little water, and he's in a basket with a tissue nest in my
closet, dark, warm, quiet. So, as long as the little makes it through the night,
tomorrow will be it's lucky day.
Thank you everyone, psychobird and a special :thankyou to Trysh!

The little nestling is a house finch and now in the hands of
the proper experienced rehabber. He has a next door cage
neighbor also a finch and the two were having quite a vocal
exchange, don't know what they were saying but I think my
ears felt a little warm... :rotfl
