I found my two dogs tossing a young chipmunk around this morning. Got the dogs back inside and was able to get the chipmunk in a box with a towel. It looked like its back leg(s) were broke as it was dragging them around, but moving very slowly and we was soaking wet from all the dew on the grass. Had to finish getting ready for work so when I checked him again, about 30 minutes later, he was very lifeless and I wasn't even sure he was alive. I put him in the car with me and thought I would check him more thoroughly when I got into work. I brought him in to the office, rechecked and noticed he was still breathing. I put him close to the space heater so he could get warmed up and dry. He slowly started coming around and eventually ended up getting out of the box I had him in when I was checking on him. I got him rounded back up again with the help of my sister and he is now in a bigger box that he cannot get out of. My initial plan would be to place him back where I found him, but if he is still injured I do not want to do this. The problem is I cannot tell if he is still injured. He is not dragging around his back legs anymore that I can tell and he seems to be scurrying around ok, just not sure if it is top speed or not. Not sure what I should do?

It would probably be best if he goes to a rehabber. I don't know if we have any members near you but are any of these near you?

There is one about 30 minutes away. I will try giving him a call. Thanks!

Make sure he won;t just euthanize and will actually try to rehab, Always good to ask before turning over. If no luck, let us know and we'll try harder to get you to someone.

Btw, does he have water and maybe something to eat?

Yes, I put some water in and a few cashews? Not sure how old he is, so not sure what he should be eating? I don't think he is interested in either.

Should I try and splint the leg? It is out behind him, not tucked up under him as it should be.

Poor little guy! Did you contact the rehabber? I'd let it be if your going to get him help soon. Can you provide a pic?

I contacted two rehabs. Had to leave a message as they work as volunteers and are probably at their day job right now. I will try and get some pics shortly.

This picture is huge and I do not know how to make it smaller? This was taken earlier. Now I cannot hardly even open the box to look at him without him trying to jump out.

Can you tell by the pic about how old he is? Should he still be with his mother?

Is it just one leg that is injured, or both? If both, he may be paralyzed. Have you seen him pee? He definitely needs to get to a rehabber as he'll likely need a cast on that leg or some antiinflammatory meds if he has spinal trauma. He looks like he may be old enough to eat regular food, not sure if fully weaned though by the picture.

From what I can tell it is just one leg that is injured. He has peed and pooped, so I guess that is probably a good sign. I am meeting up with a rehabber this evening, so hopefully he will get the help he needs!

Oh good. If you end up turning him over, please see if you can get updates. We always like to know what happens.

Btw, welcome to TSB and thanks for helping. Now that you've helped one, others will find you. Seriously, that's the way it goes.

Got the little guy dropped off. When he gets all better the Rehabilitator is going to come over to my house and rerelease him back onto our property.
