View Full Version : one of the babies is not peeing

Been soaking and soaking, trying to express. Would not eat this afternoon at all (when I tried to push some, he vomited it back up). I cannot even see an actual hole in his penis. I know he was peeing. No one has been suckling, penis is not red or anything. Vet gone. Anything else I can try? I am freaking out. Been down this road with Furter and it did not end good.

I cannot even see a hole in his penis, nothing. This is crazy. Even rolling it, I cannot see a hole. I know he was peeing (not to mention if he wasn't he would have been dead by now or at the very least huge!) I gave him a dose of fresh TMP-SMZ I had just picked up today. Put a call into Jodi, waiting for a call back to see if she can help. I keep soaking, nothing. I keep trying to stimulate, nothing. I tried expressing, and I do know how, but cannot get it to express. Very worried. Too much like Furter.

Well, vet could not get cath in. Drained bladder via needle, sent home with more needles to continue doing over the weekend. On Bactrim and Metacam 2x a day. Hoping meds will kick in, bring inflammation down and he will start going on his own. Same as Furter. Lots of debris in his bladder, although no stones. He looks good and today did want to eat both this morning (before bladder was drained and just a bit ago.) Please pray for this little guy. I lost Furter and I cannot loose him this way.

Did the vet see where his urethra exits? If not, I'd think they'd need to remove some of the skin from the tip to open it back up. There was a squirrel once at the wildlife center that was sucked and had a scab and then the skin healed over and you couldn't see the urethra exit hole. It needed to be opened back up.

No, he could see it, it is blocked up inside there. He tried doing the 'pulse' thing but still could not get it in. He thinks (hopes) with the meds on board, hopefully all the inflammation will subside enough for him to start peeing again. But for now, have to drain in by needle once a day and give him time to heal. Keep the prayers coming, faced this with Furter and it did not have a good outcome.

I hate the nail polish on the head thing. They do it back at the wildlife center at home and it makes them lose their fur there and I don't like it. I have 9 and 8 are foxers and I can tell them apart. If not, I use sharpie marker. Hopefully he starts peeing soon.

Mine have never lost the fur on the heads, ever. I have done it for years. I don't do it forever, but initially until I get to know them and their markings, personalities, etc.

These are the notes from the vet today:
Mary is helping Jodi with a squirrel obtained from the wildlife center at Tufts Vet. Concerned about a swelling in the abdomen. Eating OK and defecating. Not sure about urinations.
Ultrasound confirmed that the 2 cm swelling in the abdomen was the urinary bladder.
Aspirated 5 mL of urine via 25G needle.
Urinalysis showed moderate cystitis and heavy debris (background too busy to convincingly differentiate debris from bacteria).
Unsuccessfully attempted to catheterize the urethra under isoflurane sedation using a tapered olive tipped steel catheter and then a 24G IV catheter sleeve (urethral opening was too small).
Please continue the Sultatrim and also start Metacam for inflammation.
Monitor urine production as discussed.

I think I am going to loose him. He is now vomiting. Would not eat last night at all, but looks like formula is coming up.

He is still with us, stopped vomiting. May try to sub-q and see if we can get him over this. Not even sure what is going on now. Can't pee still. Wondering if this is from his bladder pushing on stomach, but food should not still be in there after that many hours, so not sure what to think.

Could the antibiotics be causing tummy upset?
What did the vomit look like?
Was there an odor?
Poor little peanut. :(

How often are you draining the urine off? Kidney issues can cause vomiting and if the pressure gets too high in the bladder, the kidneys will not be able to filter more blood to produce more urine. Those toxins usually released by the kidneys will build up in the blood and can cause vomiting as well as neurologic signs. how much urine are you getting out of his bladder? I'd keep track of his urine output to make sure he is still producing a good amount of urine.
Fluids sound like a good idea to me. Keeping hydrated is really important for him.
Do you know how to tube feed? I'd go with that as well if he's not willingly eating. Don't go with the full amount he could eat, but maybe like 4%.

Just read the vets report. How long was it that he wasn't peeing before he made it to the vet? 5 mL doesn't seem like much urine to have in the bladder after an extended time without urinating.
Your vet is awesome! It would be awesome to ultrasound a little baby squirrel. I wonder if his vomiting is a side effect of the sedation for putting the catheter in.
Keep fighting little Bandit, you are super cute.

Little Bandit is hanging on. I 'think' he may be peeing on his own (going to put him in a container by himself in a bit with paper towels so I can know for sure. Sub-q'd him today, will again later. Got him to take some fluid by mouth, too. Keep those prayers coming!!!
