Hi.

I have a 4-5 week old grey. We found her abandoned in our back yard 2 weeks ago. I think we've done a good job of nursing her back to health. She is quite active and strong. We wanted to nurse her back and release her back in our yard. A couple days ago I started using a bigger syringe not know the consequences. Well I know them now and have gone down to a 3ml. Today I noticed some minor "clicking" in her breathing. Thing is I don't know that I can get items like "baytril" locally (I'm in Canada)

Suggestions? She still seems strong and active.

Thanks.

There is no such thing as "minor" clicking.
With aspiration pneumonia these little can go down fast!
Can you obtain any type AB? If so let us know what you
have and we can tell you if it can be used and how to dose.

In the meantime I will try to direct someone more local to
your area to this forum.

Do you hear the click with EVERY breath? Or is it sporadic?

Tim

It is quite sporadic. When you say any type of AB are you referring to one's for humans? If so my wife is a nurse and probably can if can suggest one.

Cipro is a human antibiotic that is the human equivalent of Baytril. However, if she is not clicking with every breath, it may not be pneumonia. If your wife is a nurse, perhaps she could use a stethoscope and see if it is a click with every breath.

Funny you say that. I was just about to say we have ciprofloxacin here. If it is determined that she needs it what would the dosage be?

SammysMom
04-24-2014, 06:47 PM
We would need a definite weight in grams for her to dose it properly.

stepnstone

We need a weight on her to dose as all meds for them are administered by weight.

Yes as SammysMom said we would need a weight on her to get the accurate dose.
BUT there is a margin of error too with the dose we would give you, so if you don't have a gram
scale, if you could post a photo of her, full body, we can guesstimate, yet still keep it on the safe side.
Oh, what mg is the Cipro?

edit: Actually getting a gram scale is necessary for feeding too, we go according to body weight and then
you feed a percentage typically 5-7% of their weight, every 3-4 hours, depending on age.

She was roughly 80 grams yesterday. Wife is bringing her scope home. Cipro is 500mg tablets

I will break this down for you, and send the info in a pm.
Please DO NOT give any antibiotic without knowing for sure
the need to do so. :thumbsup

Thank you. I assume if the click is sporadic to hold off unless it becomes constant?

Here's a video of a little squirrel with pneumonia, you can hear the sound.

With a stethoscope and training she should be able to tell if this is in the chest, which is a problem, or is just baby mouth noises (and they make a ton of them).

You got the help you'll need here, you got this Tim.
The important thing is having what you need
right there if it turns out to be P, if it does,
your already ahead of the solution. :thumbsup

I put her right by my ear and it seems when shes calm and at rest it's very sporadic. Seems when she's one the move and breathing quicker it's more frequent but still sporadic. Hoping she doesn't have any issues. Here is a picture.

Fudgie is a little older/bigger but mine definitely does not sound like that.

Did she aspirate when you used the bigger syringe?
You could still go down even further to the 1 cc syringes, as she is still tiny.

Tim

I don't think she did. Nothing came out her nose.

Oh good grief, she is beautiful! Have your wife listen and you will know for sure one way or the other.:Love_Icon

One more question. How often should she poop? She is peeing a lot but hasn't pooped in close to 2 days. At least not that I have seen while stimulating her. And the "clicking" has not worsened at all. I may of jumped the gun on my diagnosis :)

What are you feeding her - what formula? How much and how often? No poop is usually indicative of nothing in there to poop out unless it is accompanied by tummy distress.

4 - 4.5ml Esbilac 6 times daily. After reading a bit on here I am wondering if I need to add something to it. Cream? I only stopped overnight feeding in the last few days. I'll change the diet if you can recommend what I should be doing.

If she weighs 80 grams the rule of thumb is 5-7% of their body weight
be fed every feeding which should be roughly every 3-4 hours.
Her range would be between 4-5.6 cc's per feeding.
If she wants more it's ok to go a "little" over, just watch for a bloated, hard belly.
See how she tolerates it, and increase slowly if she desires.

Great she is right in the ballpark!
You can add a "touch" of heavy cream.
When you make your formula, do you make it
ahead and let it sit for 6-8 hours in the refrig?
Is this the Esbilac with probiotics?

Roughly the cream should be ~1/4 teaspoon for every 15 cc's.

I've been making enough for 24 hours but not waiting the 6-8 hours. I will start. I will have to check which esbilac I have.

SammysMom

What you want is the powdered puppy esbilac. The can say "now with probiotics amd prebiotics" or something close to that. Maybe some extra hydration in between feedings. Hydration can help move the bowels. Adding a bit of sugar to the water will help too.

This is the one that you should be using.
The one you have, has caused tons of problems with little ones.
I will look for the links.
See the blue line at the top that mentions prebiotics/probiotics?

Sorry the links I was looking for have been removed, since THIS Esbilac is now
the recommended formula.
With the old formula, they changed their processing methods and it just didn't
digest well with the littles.

Just checked with the wife at home.
We do have the right one. May try the warm "bum bath" trick :)

I have read a few different mixing ratios.
I am doing 2-1 water to powder. That ok?

Ok I lied. One more question. How can I treat dry skin on her genital area? Oh and she pooped! Only a small one but at least things are moving. :)

Two (2)parts really warm water to one (1) part dry formula.
Remember to let it sit 6-8 hours in the refrig.
On the dry bum, you can use mineral oil or baby oil, just a drop and
rub it in. Use as often as you have to.

Never worry about asking too many questions, that's how we all learn. :thumbsup

So here's an update. She had a really good poop last night and my wife checked her out with her stethoscope. She says she has good stomach and lung sounds so seems all is well! She's eating 5cc's every meal and getting much more active. Think her eyes are going to open very soon.
