View Full Version : Another baby, Squeakers sister???

So yesterday at 6:00pm my grandmother comes and tells me that there is a squirrel trying to get in a cat carrier that was on our porch. It was the first one I tried to use for Squeakers, but it was too small. I go out there to look thinking it was an adult squirrel that was curious about the smell, but when I go outside I see a little baby!

I could tell immediately that she was dehydrated because she peed then started to drink it. So I slowly crept out there, opened the cat carrier and in she went. I took her inside, wrapped her up and called redwulf.

She gave me instructions on what to do and we came to the agreement that the baby should be taken to udowhat since she is much smaller than Squeakers(130g!) and she has been outside by herself for longer. Redwulf will be coming to get her at around 6:30pm tonight, but until then I gotta get this baby some fluids and food!

So at 9:00pm yesterday, 12:00am and 7:00am today she drank 6ccs of fluids the first time then 6.5ccs the other times. I tried to give her her first feeding of formula(1 part 50/50 esbilac/goats milk, 3 parts water) at 9:00am, but she wanted nothing to do with it. I made sure it was warm enough and put some in the side of her mouth to try, but she really wasn't at all interested.

Her next feeding of fluids is 10:00am so I'm going to give her that and try the formula again at 11:30am, but I'm really wondering if there are any tricks to get her to drink the formula? I have her for quite a few more hours and I really want to get some nutrition in her.

Awww! you are so lucky! I need to come where you are :) Id love another baby! I have found that the nipples offered on Henrys are the best way to get them to eat. I had a hell of a time getting Farnsworth to eat until I got them.. Whew and what a difference a "boobie" made! He turned into a ravenous greedy squirrel. If I wasnt at work I'd bring you one :)

What are you using for hydration?

If it is the salt/sugar/water solution, make a batch with just sugar, no salt, and see if he likes that for hydration. If he does, at the next feeding, give him half formula and half sugar/water. You don't have the "don't mix hydration with formula" issue - that is due to the salt content, and the flavor will still be familiar to him.

If he is not totally hydrated he won't want formula either.

(1 teaspoon sugar in a cup of water will work)

10:20am: Drank 6.5ccs of fluids.

Yea I was so surprised to see her. Like I said I thought it was going to be an adult squirrel lol. I don't even know how she got up there because we are on the top floor. My boyfriend saw her two days ago across the street munching on a nut.

She doesn't mind the nipples. She actually just started suckling on the last feeding of fluids. She tries to eat too fast though so I have to be really careful while feeding her. Right now I am using the sugar water mixture I found in this thread. (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?45440-Need-Help-asap!-baby-squirre-with-no-appetite)

1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

I will whip up a batch of just the sugar water and try that because she was suppose to start eating at 9.

Yea my only guess to why she wasn't eating was from lack of hydration because she was really dehydrated (I'm assuming since she was drinking her pee) and when I go to give her fluids she really wants to suck it down.

You can push the hydration feedings closer together, too. Poor little thing. Hopefully she will take the combo of formula/sugar water.

Tried to mix the formula with sugar water, no luck. Trysh called and I told her about the new girl not wanting to eat. She said try less dilution, but still no luck. I gave her more fluids at 1:20pm, she drank 5.5ccs. I'll give her fluids every 2 hours. I guess she's just really dehydrated :c

One person here had luck with a touch of maple syrup. Different kind of sweetness and has minerals. It is from a tree after all.

I decided to name the new girl Zoey. She has continued to drink her fluids and around 7:00pm we should be meeting up with redwulf and udowhat c: She has become much more energetic and played with me a little bit, but we had to stop because she isn't very good at gauging her bites xD Actually drew a little bit of blood lol she's going to be a handful when she gets food into her.

Just got back a little bit ago from meeting up with redwulf and udowhat. She was very good for them, for the most part lol. She gave udowhat a little nip, but other than that she was good c: udowhat got her to eat and she drank some fluids. By the end of the night I think little Zoey Piddles( thanks redwulf for such a cute last name! I know to other people it probably sounds weird, but I think it is just too cute and perfect for her c: ) will feel much better!

She was very photogenic for me! I'm glad I got a few good shots before she left c: puppet gal, you probably will see her! Hopefully she'll be a little bigger when you do, she's such a skinny little thing right now, but that will change soon!

Spiede,

Way to get fluids into her. You really helped with initiating hydration. I know that 'your' new little girl will be well loved and taken care of at UDo's.

I posted this under Zoey's sister's thread, but will also post here.

Zoey is quite emaciated, but that is nothing new for some of the babies that come into our loving hands. Thanks again Spiede, for doing such a good job with hydration. And for being so wise to know when something is over your head. Your instincts are really good and without another squirrel, you could have handled Zoey.

But it is wise to start low and go slow with eager young apprentices also!

I heard that Zoey is desperate when she nurses. Man is it ever hard when they are so emaciated not to give them more than what one should. She is in good loving hands with UDo hovering over to watch every breath that comes out of this little baby one, Zoey. I do ask for prayers for this wee little one.:grouphug

No problem! I'm just happy to help c: I'll be on the look out for any more babies that might be out there.

Yea I wished that I would have been able to take care of both, but I knew she was way worse than Squeakers was so I knew that she needed you guys.

I think she will do well in Udo's care c: Like I said she'll be a little fatty in no time<3

Little Zoey is doing very well besides being frustrated at not getting all the food she wants. I promise later tomorrow that there will be pictures.

I'm so glad <3 Oh pictures please!

Hi all, Need to feed her now but I promise to get pics tonight. ( I hope) She is so tiny and I must move at a snail's pace with her to avoid re-feeding syndrome. This is a very real possibility when a baby is sooooooo emaciated and dehydrated. Remember the re- feeding motto is, "Start low, go slow" . The gut begins to change under extreme malnourished conditions and too much food, too soon can actually cause death. She, however, is turning the corner. Her hydration level is much better.
Spiede, Redwuff, puppetgal, and those praying for Zoey Piddles, thank you for all of your kind support. BTW Puppet Gal, I hope to see you tomorrow to visit Farnsworth and I promise there will be another baby squee soon in your life. Once one squirrel finds you, all the squirrels in the state and beyond spread the word and you will always be on their "help list". It just happens that way.
Thanks, all :thankyou
Marty

Thanks for stopping in SammysMom. She is so precious. Amazing how quickly their attitude changes once they figure out where the yummy stuff is coming from.

CSL thanks for stopping by...this little one is amazing. Imagine being so desperate to drink one's own urine...I shudder to think about it

PuppetGal so sorry I won't see you tomorrow. Your boy is one of the most beautiful babies I have seen!

Oh this sounds so similar to my story finding one then the other a couple of weeks later after mother was killed. The maple syrup was the trick for me.I used pure maple syrup not any with preservatives. Once Ludwig tasted it, he was on it like white on rice. lol Now he is chopping all kinds of food. Also he was a handful but after a few days a feeding he now loves to be on us and around us. These two are adorable.

Talk about adorable, Madamelipstick, those two boys of yours, are!

Little Zoey Piddles came down with diarrhea just like her sister did. It took us a while to figure out with Squeakers, that the diarrhea was not diet related, but was a protozoan infection. We treated Zoey tonight and hopefully we can get her D. free

Little Zoey Piddles has raging diarrhea. A dose of baycox made no difference at all. This is scary. She does not have a lot of reserves to fight for long. Please pray for this little girl.

Redwulf said that little Zoey Piddles still has that icky mucusy poo, but she looks good and is gaining weight. Hopefully the metro and baytril that she's starting on will clear that up!

I am happy to announce that Zoey Piddles has moved into having good stools. She had total mucous, no stool, that she passed for 3-4 days. We could not get a clear answer from the vet concerning what was going on. After giving her a dose of Baycox that seemed not to do a thing, UDo put her on a round of Metro and Baytril, and even then she had the mucous stools for the 3 days. She is now at my house cos UDo got 3 2week old blinkys' (golly are they cute). Guess I have to get some more pictures of that little cutey.
