hi. received group 3 4 wk old babies 4 days ago, littlest girl turns out to have aspiration pneumonia, people didnt know that the bubbles coming out the nose was bad and to turn them upside down to drain etc...wasn't sure when i first got them, had never heard it before . called my vet and got script for amoxicillin and clav 0.05 ml ,2x a day started yesterday. she was also severely dehydrated and i started rehydrating with pedialyte also yesterday around 9:30 am fluids every 2 hours she has been taking in 3-4 cc each time. sounds a little better today and acth
ing better but has diarrhea as aside effect of antibiotics. i have been rehydrating for 24 hours, how long should i continue to rehydrate or should i start giving her diluted formula now? i don;t want to make her go backwards. also should i give her yogurt for the diarheaand if so how much . i know you are not supposed to mike the rehdration with the feeding so any information would be highly appreciated . i am a licensed rehabber but this is only my second time rehabbing baby squirrels . my first bunch i had from the get go and they didn't have any problems. thank you in advance!!:thankyou

hi squireleysquirrels -- I just saw this post as I was on my way in to feed my gang...
I woiuld begin her on dilute formula now. She needs calories for strength and the few glucose calories in Pedialyte aren't going to keep her going. You can add full-fat yogurt to her formula, yes, for the probiotics. You can also use acidophilus -- a pinch in the formula -- which works well. Pneumonia babies are challenging to feed; because she can't breathe, she will resist eating. Go slowly, drop by drop, allowing her to swallow. :thumbsup

You can also use YoBaby natural/organic baby yogurt (mine loved blueberry more than anything else) :thumbsup
Also, what type of formula are you using?
