Hi All:
Local Equine Vet called me, someone dropped off a baby squirrel they found in their horses stall. He looks to be about 5 weeks, eyes just opened. Blood on his head and nose, no other visible injuries.
At diluted FV (not dehydrated) but the breathing is weird, I think he is breathing thru his mouth.
Gave him Baytril, should I give him Metacam?
I will clean his head and nose in a little while, he wants to sleep and I don't want to stress him too much.
I made a video so you could hear the clicking. This was made as soon as I got him settled, I hadn't fed him yet, so it isn't aspiration (at least by me). Any thoughts?

I would give him Metacam, to help with swelling of nasal passages and injury. Is he better after being cleaned up? :grouphug

How much Metacam?
He weighs 97 grams. I cleaned him up, his head as one wound and I didn't realize it til cleaning that his left nostril was caked over with blood. I was able to get it all off of his nose so both nasal passages are open now, still breathing thru his mouth.
He just at 12cc's of FV diluted 3:1
Something is wrong with his left front, will take him to the vet this afternoon for a look see.
I'm in love already, he is giving me armage in the first photo.

What's on his little head?
Is your metacam 1.5 mg/ml?
If so the dose is 0.02. This is the loading dose.
All other doses should be cut in half.
This is dosed usually once a day.
edit: I'm already in love as well. :Love_Icon
edit again: I see you already said it was blood.
Glad that he is on Baytril. :thumbsup

Nancy that is a scab, I cleaned it, looks like a puncture wound, hence the Baytril.
Yes that is the mix for my Metacam.
I'll give him Metacam at the next feeding.
Thanks,
Kim

Cutie Patootie at the vet, looks like the head wound is a cat bite, which creates a sinus infection, which creates mouth breathing.
He gained a few grams from intake to vet visit :)
Vet had a student in and she hadn't seen a baby squirrel, she was smitten of course. Got a pix of Little man (no name yet) sleeping in her hands. How can anyone hurt these little creatures????

He is doing much much better this morning. Still breathing thru his mouth but eating like a champ. YAY for Baytril and Metacam.
The issues I saw yesterday on intake are gone (not using left front) falling to the side, TLC, warmth and food make a lot of difference.
Thanks for the help everyone.
Kim
