I was trying to send this to nancy but it won't send. It keeps saying I can't send it because I have too many stored messages. I deleted a bunch and it still won't so i am posting it here in hopes that someone can give me advice
I was was hoping you could help me with dosing. It's for Squirrelie. He's my first squirrel. I've had him since he was 4.5 weeks old. Now he's 8.5 years old. He's had problems with his lower teeth since he was 6 months old. They grow super slow and the gums are super inflamed. I noticed him having pain with it yesterday. I started him on baytril and liquid calcium yesterday. This morning when I got home the left side of his face is puffy. I have a few kinds of antibiotics here plus metacam for pain. Can you give me the dosage for the metacam and let me know if any of these other antibiotics would be better for this situation? I'll get his weight at the end of this letter. Here are all the meds....
antibiotics
baytril 250 mg tab
metronidazole 250 mg
sulfatrim80-400 mg
apo doxy tabs 100 mg
amoxi 500 mg caps
apo acyclovir 200 mg
bactrim SMz tmp 960 mg
ciproflox. 500 mg
meloxicam 7.5 mg tab
these two I don't even know what they are for
ultram50 mg
prednisone 5 mg
im going to send this before I lose it again. I'm going to weigh him and send it separate. He's an adult male eastern grey. He weighs 554 grams
thanks!!!!!

Ultram (Tramadol) is for pain. Prednisone is a corticosteroid for anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant applications. One of my mice took P as an anti-inflammatory when she had an inner ear infection and another took it as an immunosuppressant when she had allergies.
As far as how much to give, I am hesitant to post dosages because I do not know all of the the meds a squirrel can and cannot have. Rats and mice, for instance, can take certain medications that a hamster cannot. Sorry, I realize that is why you asked, but I shall leave that for the squirrel experts on here of which there are many. I will, however, include the thread to the dosage conversion posted here that might be helpful once you know dosage to convert:

I sincerely hope your Squirrelie recovers. You clearly love him dearly.

I will dose these for you. Send me an email and I will send it
that way *****
I wonder if a tooth is abscessed, do you have a vet?
Remember when giving Meloxican/Metacam, the only pain reliever that you have
that you can use with this is Tramadol.
DO NOT give infant ibuprophen.
This may be something that a vet will HAVE to look into.
Can you contact iwonka just incase this doesn't go away.
A vet is always the best option. :Love_Icon

Out of the drugs that squirrelfriend has on hand, which antibiotics do members think would work best
for her squirrel?
I gave dosing instructions for Baytril/Cipro and for Amoxi.

Nancy, an infection in the face should have coverage for the organisms that are in the mouth. Of the drugs on hand, the Amoxicillin would be the better drug for the Gram Positive flora (Streptococcus viridans group) of the mouth. Because a mucous membrane is involved, coverage for anaerobes should also be included. The metronidazole would be used for anaerobes. I believe that would be a good combo in this situation, with the drugs on hand.

Thank you HRT4SQRLS, I gave her the dosage for the amox. after thinking about it more. I would have preferred Clavamox, but that's not an option. I will now give the dose for the metro.
Thank you so much! :grouphug

I agree, the Clavamox would have been great. The clavulanic acid added to the amoxicillin makes it effective against organisms that have acquired resistance. Clindamycin would probably be better for the anaerobes but metro will work.
I always believe that, when nothing else is available, the best drug is the one you have. :thumbsup

I hear ya there!
I remember once a finder coming on with a squirrel crashing from MBD.
We had to get calcium into a squirrel immediately. They had nothing, no tums,
no vitamins, nothing and no corner stores for miles and miles, AND NO CAR!
We finally resorted to pulverized egg shells
to pull him out of the MBD until they
could get to town. :shakehead
Thank you Patti!!!!!!! :grouphug

Sorry I haven't responded here in a bit. Nancy has been helping a lot through emails. His face is even more swollen this morning. The swelling has progressed to that it is one edging over the top of his head. He's resting now. I just gave him yogurt and some pain meds. He had one dose of antibiotics this morning.

Hopefully the metacam can help reduce the swelling.
Have you tried contact iwonka to see if her vet can help?
I'm not even sure how far she is from you.
Hope something helps this little one. :Love_Icon

He's feeling a little bit better today. Just a little more bright eyed and doesn't seem to be in as much pain. He's not out of the woods yet but showing a little improvement. Iwonka would be about a five hour drive from here

Well this is hopeful Wendy, and at least he isn't getting worse.
Poor little bugger. :Love_Icon
I know the drive is long, but would she have a vet that
would see him..................IF he needed one?

Squirrelie is looking quite a bit better this morning. Every day he is just a little bit more better. He can open his eye normally again. Before the swelling made it so it didn't open all the way. He's Perkier too. He even tried to play a little today. Not with his usual gusto but he did. Thanks for all your help guys.

Hi nancy. Sorry to bother you again. Squirrelie has been doing really well. He's not in pain but the side of his face swelled back up. Should a make a new batch of meds since these are getting old and if so should I keep him on the same meds or should I give him another kind of antibiotic? Could it be old meds or is it becoming resistant to the ones I was using before?
I tried to send the above message to you nancy. It won't let me send it . It says I have too many stored messages. I emptied a couple of pages of them last time but it still doesn't let me send it. Is there someone wrong with my account?

I will have Bravo take a look at your pm's.
I forget the drug that Squirrel was on.
Yes, I would try new meds and see if that helps.
The metacam will also help with swelling.
I fear that this may just be putting a bandaid on the real
problem. If this has something to do with his teeth, we need to
start thinking now how to deal with that. I would contact iwonka,
I know she is far away, but we need a backup plan and we can't wait
until he gets too bad, we just need something in our back pocket in case
of an emergency.
I forget what other antibiotics you have, you could try with fresh Baytril for now.
Give me a list of what else you have. :grouphug

Squirrelfriend, I know you're busy, but all of us are too. It's baby season! So it's hard to go back through a whole thread to try to remember the details.

He's still doing great. He's much more playfull and more active. Sometimes too active!:grin2 It's hard to sleep when he keeps trying to play with us. He doesn't live in a cage. He lives freely in our bedroom.
it appears that it was just an abcess. Not sure why but it's gone now. I am so happy that he is ok.
