Hey, some of you might have read my last post re: release concerns, and as much as I don't want to do this, I think it would be best to be in contact with an actual rehabber. I've had a hard time researching rehabbers in my area on my own, and am afraid of getting in trouble--I feel like some of you folks will be more sympathetic/less judgmental.

The deets: I've got an 8 month old female squirrel who I overwintered in my apartment, but she is raring for release, and--with my lease about to end, the end of the school year in full swing, and the end of my relationship with my boyfriend/co-squirrel-parent, I don't think I can do this alone. ANY help would be super appreciated. If someone wanted to maybe coach me through the release process on my own, that'd be great, or I can drop her off some time, cry a lot, and leave her in good hands. More than anything, I want her release to go well and for her to acclimate to her life in the wild. I'm very nervous about the whole thing, have really bonded to her, and am generally freaking out.

To tug on yr heart strings: cute pix.

seriously, though. I'm young and dumb, but I think I need some help. If anyone can help out, you'd be my hero forever.

There is an organization in Waukesha County called the Wildlife in Need Center. They take in and rehab wild animals. Take a look at their web site, www.helpingwildlife.org. They may be able to release your squirrel for you.

I'll look into it. I know the humane society in Milwaukee also has a wildlife rehabilitation program, but they only take babies and injured adults. Dima is neither, anymore, and I'm afraid I'd have some awkward explaining to do... Thanks for the tip, though!

Be very, very careful with wildlife centers. I don't know if the other poster has specific experience with this center but we have had way too many horror stories - taking in the squirrel and announcing a week later that it was too tame and euthanizing it. Un;ess I have people who I trust telling me they are okay, I steer clear of them.

That's exactly my fear and also why I haven't gone to my local humane society. I would much rather be in contact with an individual rehabber. I trust people more than organizations, as a general rule. Not to mention, this little squirrel is the greatest thing I've ever known, so I'm not just going to trust anybody with her.

Hi there!

I used to live in Waukesha, and I encountered horror stories with 3 SE WI rehabbers telling me that I should have just let Lulu-Bean die instead of help her (that one was in Oconomowoc). I found a lot more problems with WI rehabbers than I found help. Hopefully you can find someone...

Otherwise, I found the closest people that I trusted were in IL (and I found them on here), if you're willing to make the drive to someone there.

WI law is very tricky with squirrels and I can message you everything I found if you want...

Best of luck :Love_Icon

Have you gotten any help with this yet? I'm not a licensed rehabber but rehabbed and released 4 squirrels just a few months ago. I'd be willing to help in whatever way. Oconomowoc is my home town.

Hello. Have you had any success with locating a rehabber or someone willing to help you with the little one? In case it works out that no one turns up to help, I also offer to help take her and provide her with shelter over the winter until next spring when the weather is more favorable for possible release. I'm a little over an hour away, and would be agreeable to meet you for transfer. I'm also not a rehabber, but I too have had experience raising a baby squirrel. I would be thrilled to take her and provide for her. Keep me in mind in case you are still in need of shelter for that little cutie.
