I have a baby squirrel about 4 weeks of age. Your info really helped me with him. I have a question though, he keeps making what appears to be sneezing noises from his nose and some times there is a little fluid on the tip. I checked for wheezing and I hear none. Should I be concerned about this? This is my first squirrelet I've taken care of and I'm trying so hard. I did lots of reach on them last night and found I'd been feeding it wrong possibly causing asperation. Also he started Fox valley and last time i fed he got kinds of bloated. I have been trying to give water this last feeding but he doesn't want to take it. How can I get around this?

Yes, you should be concerned. I'm going to start a thread for you and direct you to it in a moment. That way you can get expert advice in the Emergency section, ok?

Give me a minute.

Firstly, please hold him close and listen carefully to see if you hear any clicking when breathing. If you do, we need to know immediately.

As to how to feed, here is a link to proper technique. It's very important. Syringe pointed up, head pointed down:

http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?36777-PROPER-FEEDING-TECHNIQUE!!

I assume that you're providing a heart source? A heating pad set on low under the container, and half off of it so that they can move to the cool side if too hot is best.

If he is bloated, give no more food. Please feel his belly and see if it's hard and round. It should be soft, liek a partially filled water balloon.

Is he pooping and peeing? Are you stimulating? Are his poops golden or whitish?

How much does he weigh and are you feeding 5-7% of that weight, and on what schedule?

I don't believe I hear any clicking noises he makes sounds with his mouth but nothing from his chest. That is the video I watched and he has been eating better since. Yes he has heat I'm using one of those snuggles underneath his box. His belly is soft it was just after one feeding his little belly was very round but not hard. I went ahead and put his bottom in warm water for 10 minutes and stop feeding for a while. Tried to give water but he will not drink it. He is pooping and peeing just fine no problems there. The stool is a mustard color and not runny.

Thanks for caring for this little one! Is he an Eastern Grey squirrel?

Do you have a gram scale? It's best to weigh him so you can know exactly how much he weighs and feed accordingly.

Curious, how long have you had this baby?

What are you using to feed him formula?

Could you take a picture of your squirrel and post it in this thread?

He is soo ooh cute! I love him :) no I do not have a gram scale. I have had him for almost two weeks. We are using fox valley now we started on esbilac but then I found the fox valley website so I got the formula the snuggle the syringes and nipples.

Oh, he is SO cute! :Love_Icon What's his name?

Are you using Esbilac *with probiotics*? It should say that on the can. This is a must. :thumbsup

I encourage you to get a gram scale - you can get them pretty cheap at most places that sell kitchen supplies, even Walmart. This way you can make sure you are feeding him enough, and not too much. And you'll have it for the next squirrel you rescue, too. :poke :grin2

You're doing a great job, btw!

With this sneezing and fluid on his nose - has that changed now that you are feeding in the correct position?

Should I contacta vet he still has fluid on his little nose it's making me really nervous. I'm an accountant so I have little experience.

Which state are you in? Do you have access to a squirrel-friendly vet?

Be careful with a vet and make sure that they won't confiscate it first. Lots will, and many/most end up getting put down.

Can you get a gram scale? You can get them at Target, Walmart, many grocery stores, etc and are about $20. They're invaluable in raising squirrels. They let you know how much to feed and how your progress is going.

Can you give a pic of the discharge? Is it a lot or just some wetness?

Have you tried to contact local rehabbers?

Fireweed

I sent K a list of rehabbers in the OP's state (s/he's already contacted two who haven't returned the calls).
I suggested going back to the dog's vet (who saw the squirrel already) if worried about aspiration pneumonia or infection. Regardless, it would be a good idea if the vet is squirrel-friendly as they might be able to get meds from the vet.

I also asked the K to check the roof of the squirrel's mouth in case of puncture from a fall (still don't know how baby came to K).

Asked K to come back to TSB and post a pic of nose/wetness, and update.

Also, sent message to 2ndhand in case she knows of anyone in K's area.

Gotta run for now. Will be back in a half hour.

The fluid take a while to form over the nose. I was carrying him in my coat the other day and when i went to unzip my coat he had squirmed out of my pocket and fell to the floor. I notice he had a little blood on his nose and I think his teeth went through the roof of he mouth.

So precious. Please check in often, and read those with the experience posts. You get attached quickly. If something happens to them it hurts like hell. Read and learn all you can. And like I said check back often. Post pics often. A pic is worth a thousand words. Someone may see something the rest of us have no clue about. :Welcome:grin3:thumbsup
