OH MY OH MY!! --I was feeding Darla just now and she wouldnt eat.... when I noticed a worm coming out of her bottom.
It was about 2 inches long and when I went too get it (with gloves on) I pulled a good foot out of her.

HELP!! --What do I need to give her to kill these worms?
*I've never had to deal with worms before.

Are you able to tell what kind of worm it is? If you can identify it will make it easier to recommend a dewormer, as not all dewormers work on all kinds of worms.

The first pic looks like it is in segments like a tapeworm. Is it just the pic that looks like that or is it in segments that would break apart?

Are you able to get a clearer pic of the worm? Sorry to ask you to jump through additional hoops. Just want to make sure what we are treating for.

It looks like a roundworm to me. It's probably an Ascaris. They get very long. I doubt a tapeworm would come out intact like that. :yuck

Here's a thread about a squirrel that had a 9 inch roundworm, along with a picture.

Rhapsody do you have the Wild Mammal Babies book?
If not, I will scan in the info about roundworms.

Panacur would work, as would Praziquantel, and possibly even Ivermectin. I personally would use the Ivermectin as the last option.

Droncit may also work, but this may be more specific to tapeworms.

EDIT: Pyrantel will also work.

Yep, baby has roundworm. Kuma had them once (only he threw it up and it coiled like a snake....eeeeeewwwwww...on my anniversary, no less! lol) Panacure is the safest. One of my gliders had roundworm once, so had to treat all my gliders. 3 treatments in total, one every two weeks over 6 weeks. If you have other squirrels it is usually a good idea to treat all, as it is very easily passed.

Sorry, I cannot get another pic of the worm, because hubby poured bleach over it.... he wanted it gone --DEAD!!
The picture looks exactly like what came out of Darla --and I do have some Ivermectin on hand ( she is 270 grams)

Nancy I do not have the book yet --can you please send me the info - Thanks.

And what about me --how easily is it for me to get, as I have been holding her like a baby in a blanket.

Isn't Darla a neuro? I wouldn't use Ivermectin on a neuro. The other drugs are probably safer. I'd ask a vet.

You can get it, but it is less likely (I assume you wash your hands after handling her). The other critters are more at risk, as they could have easily come into contact with fecal matter, since squirrel poop seems to get everywhere (or is that just my house? lol) May not be a bad idea to just treat the whole bunch, as much as a pain that is. For them to be that large, she has had them a while (they don't usually start passing them until they get quite a few of them, from my understanding.)

Looks like a tape worm to me. Praziquantel (name brand Droncit) is the dewormer for tapes.

Carolyn, look at the pics in this link. Did the worm look like this in real life or was it smoother looking?

My educated guess without examination would be round worm.
But regardless of tape or round, Praziquantel (Cestex, Droncit) will
take care of either or both.

Milo's Mom

Droncit should be dosed at 5-10mg/kg and should be repeated in 10 days.

EDIT: Personally, I'd dose at the low end of 5mg/kg.

Then personally, I'd use the Pyrantel. However, the Droncit would work too.

My dog has a apt in the morning with the vet --I will ask her to give me some thing for Darla... Thanks Everyone.

SammysMom

I would definitely get something for the dog too. They are notorious for eating poop...:eek When I had cats that were indoor/outdoor and one of them got worms, they ALL got wormed. Otherwise you risk reinfection.

When I first saw this, my thought was with Loopy and tape worms.
It did appear segmented at first.

It's nice that all of you caught that, and recognized what was there.
I'm impressed as how quick y'all picked up on this.

Just got back from the vet.... they did a float test, but sadly it did not show any thing, and their wildlife vet was not
on call today, so I will have to wait until Monday for her to look at the 2nd (much smaller) worm I took in for her to
identify, because the tech could not do it.

I am concerned about Darla, she is more lethargic this morning, --all I have is Ivermectin on hand.
Can some one please dose that for me..... Darla weighs 270 grams.

Rhapsody
03-22-2014, 12:14 PM
I got the dose..... 1 very small drop off the top of the needle that came with the syringe / medicine.
I have to go out for a hour or two --will post update later on. (she is eating bl.berry & nuts)

That's what I would give too if the ivermectin was the one from Chris at 1%.
The size of an uncooked piece of rice.
Poor little peanut, please let us know how she is doing.
