are his gums still pale.. if soo give him some corn syrup or molasses. it is for low sugar and if he is lethargic then that is why.. his sugar is low.. it will also cause no appetite.. you can give it to him regardless it will not hurt him. and will give him some pep:thumbsup
Hi my name is Jennifer. I recently seen a post of my friends saying she had a baby squirrel and i seen the pic she ppsted and he looked to be severely starved. I begged her to let me take him amd nirse him. I got him and hydrated him for a day with pedialite. but seeing little improvement. He is drinking puppys milk with whipping cream. He seems to have a lottle more energy and wagging tail a little at feeding. He is currently drinking only 3cc about every three hours. Thos is all i can get him to drink. He goes into a feeding trance almost the whole time im feeding him so it takes so long and he wears himself out. He is urinating and passing stools fine. I am worried about him though bec he is so malnurished because she was not hydrateing him before feeding or getting him warm. He os not clicking or breathing heavily. He does seem to have a rather fast heart beat. He seems very brittle. Is there anything else i should be doing right now to give him the clacium he needs. Also he seems to be about 4-5 weeks as ge only opened his eyes aboutfour days ago. There are no vets around here that will take exotic animals and cant find a rehabber. He sneezes every now and then is there a chance he may have a cold. Should i start him on baby amox. I dont have a scale to weigh him but i do have pics. Also he kind of shakes when he tries to walk and falls over sometimes could thos be bwcause he was so malnurished.

What are you feeding him (what type of formula)? And you NEED a scale, you have to know what he weighs, as he should be eating 5 to 7% of their body weight, but he is severely malnourished. It hurts to look at this poor baby. Is he on heat?
jennjenn
03-16-2014, 10:09 PM
Yes he is malnurished. It hirts me as well makes me want to strangle the girl i got him from because she sent me a pic when she first got him amd he was so healthy and pink and round. Yes he is on heat it os half under box. Im going to get him a scale in the morning.

It's hard to tell because the pic is blurry but this baby does look very dehydrated. Here's what I would advise: since he will only take small amounts every 3 hrs, keep him on that schedule for now. BUT: you should give him fludis IN BETWEEN each feeding of formula. So, if he's getting formula every 3 hrs you want to try giving him some warmed Pedialyte or sugar water at the 90-minute mark. AS he becomes better hydrated, you will see his appetite improve and his energy level as well. He is weak, that's why he shakes and wobbles. Give him lots of fleece to cuddle into and don't stress him by handling him too much.
Oh --I am sorry I should have said this first: BLESS YOU for saving this little baby! He would not have lasted another day without you! :thankyou

Is that a cardboard box? If so, please get him into a rubbermaid type plastic one as the cardboard dries them out. This baby is critical. Do you have pedialyte? He is extremely dehydrated, as well, so try getting some fluids into him. Will try to find someone close who can help. Do you have fleece? He needs to be under a bunch of fleece over the heat, as well, to hold the heat in. If you don't have pedialyte, will get you the homemade rehydration solution.

03-16-2014, 10:16 PM
Yes i do have pedialite. I gave ot to him all yesterday was scared to do too much for fear of him already being starved also i do have a rubbermaid he is jist in that tempoarily my bf is cleaning container and letting it dry. I have fleece blankets for him i just took them out to take picture.

How far are you from Chattanooga? There is a POSSIBLE vet there. What sort of a syringe are you using and what nipple? Are you making sure the formula is hot? Their body temp is so much higher than ours that the formula feels hot to us.
Don't be offended by all of the questions, we just want to help. We KNOW you are trying to help this guy and are not responsible for the condition he is in, but trying to fix it. If we seem abrupt it is because we are trying to help you quickly.

03-16-2014, 10:22 PM
Ok, you don't want to do pedialyte for more then 24 hours, but sugar water should continue in between feedings. How is his breathing, are you hearing any clicking?
jennjenn
03-16-2014, 10:23 PM
Thanks so much for being kind others have seemed to be hostile with me when im tryimg to explain he was in much worse condition. I will push more fluids and he does have fleece and heating pad and rubbermaid contaimer it was just being cleaned when i took this pic. It breaks my heart but im trying so hard and researching as much as possible. I wanted to strangle the girl that starved him bec she sent me a pic when she first got him amd he was so pink amd round and healthy it os completely onvious she starved him

Jenn I am reaching out to a Tennessee member who may be able to help. In the meantime, you are getting great advice here. You don't want to overtax this baby's little system because he is already so compromised, so just go slow & steady.....a little formula, a little hydration, a little formula...etc. Again, I am SO GLAD you got him away from that stupid person!

jennjenn I know you are trying so hard and you're my Hero of the Day. Deeeep breaths, and keep doing what you're doing. This baby just needs a chance. Nancy in NY and I have brought babies back to health who looked far worse than this little one, and I am sure others here have as well.
Don't forget to stroke him and tell him you love him....I swear they know and they get strength from it. :)

I tell him i love him all the time and i sing to him and sometimes he will wag his wittle tail a littl.the first time i gave him pedialote he was sooooo happy. I jist started balling my eyes out ppor little fellow. This girl said she rescues them all the time. Her bf cuts down trees makes me want to report her to someone.

If that is true, she needs to learn how to do it properly. Thank you for wanting to do all you can to save this baby.:Love_Icon You say he sneezes, when you have been feeding him, has any formula come out his nose? Also, what size syringe are you using to feed him?

Are you feeding him in an upright position? You always want the syringe toward the roof of their mouth and never hold them on their back like a baby.

No, tomorrow go by a pharmacy and ask them for a couple 1 cc syringes (w/o the needle). Tell them you found some orphaned kittens. Most will just give them to you. Just be very careful with the 3 cc unitl you get some 1 cc's. How is he pottying, what do his poops look like?

Don't be frazzled by any of the comments here. Most are only trying to help and no one is being judgmental or being hostile towards you. It is very hard to tell the difference between concern and hostility. Everyone here knows the situation you are in, the fact that you didn't cause this little one to be in the condition he is in. We are just here to help and if we see something concerning, it is our responsibility to point this out. We are here for the squirrel, first and foremost. I thank you so much for helping this little guy out and hopefully we can help you get him back to a healthy squirrel once again!

For now, I would just focus on getting him well. Sounds like you've got your hands full, but you're doing great! :) Just try to stay calm - we are all here to help. Most squirrels, even if raised alone can be successfully released back into the wild providing that they are healthy and the release process is handled properly.

So happy to hear this good update :) - it's been on my mind all morning. I've always just cleaned my babies with warm water on a cloth, but it does better if you clean right after feeding, so the formula doesn't dry on him.

Sometimes you can use a little cotton ball with warm water. Always make sure to get the formula off completely, and as pappy said dry it too, so he doesn't get a chill.
If formula is kept on their fur, they get what is called "milk burn", and the fur will come off in those areas. :eek
Nancy in New York
03-17-2014, 11:46 AM
Did we ever ask how much formula and how often he is taking it?
The rule of thump is 5-7% of their body weight, but we aren't sure of his weight yet.
I was just wondering if you can give an estimate of how much he eats every feeding.
CritterMom
03-17-2014, 11:48 AM
Warm water and a soft little face cloth is exactly what you should be doing - clean, clean, clean (and make sure you bundle up well and keep him warm too). I don't like using "products" like baby wipes that have chemicals on them - but you have to clean them up well because the formula hardens into concrete!
jennjenn
03-17-2014, 11:51 AM
ive just been trying to wing it with the formula. since i really dont know his weight. i try not to make it too thick or to thin. i have been putting one part formula two part water and hust a tad of whipping cream bec she wasnt using any whipping cream. he has been eating 3cc every 3 hours and 2cc of sugar water at 90 min mark. im trying to do this right hard without scale. but Nancy you are my life saver lol

ive been cleanng him after every feeding. i was using a baby wipe at first. all natural ones but it left him sticky still so i started using baby washcloth and warm water. then i take dry cloth and dry him up and wrap him up and place him back on heating pad.

I think for now, the 3cc's should be about right (from his pics, as 5% of 70 grams is 3.5cc). Plus with his little system being so weak, you don't want to overfeed. That is wonderful he is trying to groom himself, it shows he does feel better. Keep up the great work!

i was thinking that woukld be about right as well. this time he came to the syinge to feed instead of me holding him. he held it with his little hands on it until he got tired.. he does seem just a tad bit constipated... not too bad just a little longer for him to poop than normal. but peeing way more than normal!! yay!!

Wonderful update! (Please be careful, even the friendliest of dogs, can cause great damage w/o meaning to, and also you don't want to expose Squirt to him, or his natural fear of dogs will be gone, which can be very dangerous when he is released. So no play time or interaction at all should be happeing with your dog and Squirt.)

:grin2 There's more where that came from so look out! :rofl4
That first pic is SO difficult to look at. :shakehead He is now MUCH easier to look at :hyper - so adorable, that little Squirdoo :Love_Icon.
He is looking a little dehydrated to my eyes, though. Perhaps the experts can chime in, but maybe giving him some more hydration in between feedings? Or are you doing that already?
Look, lady - One or two pictures every 80 posts ain't gonna cut it around these parts. Get that thread started and begin the Klunkage Overload! We need more pics of little Squirdoodles! :tap
That's a pretty good recovery.
Very nice job. :thumbsup
