So I think I added his tail pictures.
He is doing much much better. I do believe he is starting to chew his tail off. This is what I found this morning. Doesnt look infected....just...well...icky.

Again thanks to everyone who has been so very helpful. Today is day 14 at home for him.

Tail or no tail---WE LOVE Pockets....
They get along fine without them

It would be better if a vet could cleanly remove the tail quickly but if you dont have a trusted vet (or are in a squirrel hating state which requires the vet to confiscate or euthanize wild animals like squirrels) then you can just keep a close eye for any infection.

Adding some immunboost to his diet like this:

Is probably a good idea, it will just help him all around to get better and heal faster.

Once he removes the dead section, you could put a TINY amount of Silvadene cream on it to prevent infection. Some people recommend Neosporin but I worry about some of the potential side effects like tinnitus etc.

It looks like he will still have about a third of his tail?

His tail is holding on by a "thread" this morning. I loved his tail but now I just want it gone so he and i can move on! I think its about 2/3rds. He was up this morning ate a bit got some scratchs then onto the window looked out and shivered away. Stared into the back yard then quickly zipped up me and flew into his nest box. I am wondering if he is going to be able to be released. Or want to be released.

He will let you know if he wants out again. No need to make a decision about that just yet.

Are you OK with it if he doesn;t want to leave? Most people here would love to have a squirrel who's satisfied with his life inside.

I am ok if he doesnt leave... As long as he is happy and I can care for him as I should. I have 2 week long trips planned. One in late April the other end of May. So thats my immediate concerns. I have to plan who can take care of him those weeks. Other than I can just take things as they come.

Part of me is THRILLED at the thought of him happy inside. The day before he showed up in bad shape I said "I reaaaaly miss my squir". It is a commitment and I understand the time and constant care they need. 3 adult kids just movig on their way and I have some freedom I havent for a long time. He was indoors for a year with me...and I was torn releasing him. I had a set of "twins" for a summer and released and one other that I over wintered since he has been out side. Pockets has been my steady. He is special.

I'd suggest trying to line up a babysitter now. Many people try to make introductions long before the fact to try to find someone that they'll tolerate, or at least become moderately familiar with.
