I just saw a wild ( not the one i posted the pics yesterday ) with a hurt pawn . He was not using it at all and keeping all his arm close to the body . I don't think he was clenching his fist like they often do . I gave him cracked nuts and it was difficult for him to eat them with only one hand but I'm sure by now he has eaten a good meal . At some point I saw some blood on the snow . It seemed to come from under one of his nails . I saw him two days ago and today he is worse . I was wondering if antibiotics could help . Or what else could help ?
It's so bad to see them suffer and being helpless .

Is there any way that you could get a pic of the injury? Do you have any reason to think it's infected? Are you in an area that's cold enough that festering infections are unlikely or are you warm and where this could be a problem?

A pic will be difficult because he is keeping the arm close to his body . I'll try my best . A few days ago it was puffy but he could use the pawn . Today he seemed in a bad shape . The thing that worries me is they normally get better soon and hide their problems and this one is going worse ... The climate is cold but I was still thinking about an infection . I'll go out now to see how he is and be back in a few hours with an update .
I hope there's something I can give him to help

When you say it's "getting worse" is that because it's bleeding? Or does he seem more lethargic? How are his eyes? How is he moving around? Is he keeping the weight off his paw when he walks?

They tend to bleed a lot from paw injuries. And even a small cut bleeds a lot and you will see the blood on the snow. It's mating season, too, and the fights can be brutal. I see several injuries like this to the paws during mating season - and they will hold them up for a few days to even a week and then they are fine. I'm not saying you shouldn't be concerned... just that you may not need antibiotics at this point. Watch this little guy as closely as possible, give him good food so he doesn't have to search hard and use the paw too much, and hopefully he will heal up sooner than later.

If you can get a picture that would be helpful. But I understand it's not easy. :grouphug

Hi Fireweed thank you for the answer . A few days ago he was moving around easily and seemed pretty much ok to me . He had a puffy hand and I think something minor wrong with his back leg . Today he was holding the arm close to his body and trying not to put it down to walk . I didn't notice anything strange in his eyes and he didn't seem letargic . But in the whole he seemed less healthy than before . In the afternoon I found more patches of blood ...
You're probably right about the mating : the first time I saw him he was with the other males following a female .
I have learned to thrust their big capacity to heal but today while I was looking at him I wasn't so sure at all . But i know I always worry a lot about squirrels .
I hope so much he will be better and heal .... and if I can help all the better .
So any suggestion is welcome ....
