I just got four new pinkies, and I'm worried about them getting pneumonia. So I'd really like to get ahold of some Baytril or cipro. I should have it anyways since I get squirrels every year. I've tried to order it off of several places but every one needs a vet prescription to order. Aspiration Pneumonia is a life or death thing and I'd really like to Be confident that I have it if I need it. How do you guys get your AB's for the babies?

Unfortunately I have to buy mine from my vet, and pay thru the proverbial nose. Small bottle of Baytril in suspension = $68.00.

Canvas all friends and coworkers for Cipro. A common AB for human use that can also be used on squirrels with PROPER dosing.

Minaluvri,
You can get antibiotics from California Vet Supply. Here is a link for Cipro 500 mg.
http://www.calvetsupply.com/product/Ciprofloxacin_Tablets_500_mg_strength_30_Tablets/Oral_Antibiotics
The antibiotics from Calvetsupply are labeled for use in aquariums. That is the only way antibiotics can be sold without a prescription. I think reptile sites also sell antibiotics for reptile use. I have purchased Cipro from this site. The drugs sold here are pharmaceutical grade drugs. They are the same drugs you would purchase for yourself at WalMart or wherever.
They also sell Metronidazole, Clindamycin, Amoxicillin, Doxycycline and others also. On these bottles you will see the REAL expiration date NOT the one year that is mandated by law. These drugs are the real deal and do not require a prescription. :thumbsup

Could I pay someone to send me some? Even a few tablets. I don't know how else to find some? I'm willing to pay the $68 dollars or however much it costs to get some. If it means life or death for any of these babies it's worth it. It's actually illegal to rehab squirrels without a license in my area but there's not many other options for these babies. I've been in contact with licensed rehabbers in my area but the only 2 that do neonatal squirrels aren't available. One is in the hospital and the other is moving and therefore not taking babies this season. I'm trying to get my license, I'm going to be working with a few rehabbers this baby season to gain experience. But illegal or not I'm not going to leave a baby squirrel to die. So I can't get a prescription from a vet. I don't know how else to buy any. If you are willing to sell a few whatever the cost PLEASE PM me!

Absolutely ... unequivocally YES ... they will work. They are pharmaceutical grade drugs. That used to be posted on the site but I can't seem to find it now. They probably had to remove it because 'preppers' (the end of the world wackos) are hoarding antibiotics. I cross referenced the actual pill with the 'human' drug site. It is the SAME pill that you would take.
The 500 mg pill has to be broken down for dosing. There are people here that can help you do that.

That's right! If you prefer, you could buy the 250mg. Doesn't really matter. The proper dosing can be calculated for either one. :thumbsup

Thanks so much everyone for all your help. I just put in an order for it. I just feel like I'm gonna need it at some point so it's really going to give me peace of mind to have it.

:thumbsup That's the way I feel also. When you need it, it's usually an emergency and you need it NOW. I don't want to be searching the world over for a Cipro tablet. :grin2

I can send you the instructions on how to break it down, if you give me the name of the drug and the mg.
I will also send you a sheet that tells you how much to dose by weight.:thumbsup
As I said in my pm to you, please do not dose without first coming to the board, we will go
over the dosing if and when the time arises. We have had several scary overdoses recently, so
you just need to be extra sure of what you're doing.
It's good info to have on hand. I like that you're
being proactive before you actually run into trouble.:thumbsup
