We found an injured male adult in our yard. We have him right now in the house in the cage with fleece. He is a little scared.
Getting him wasn't too much trouble. He didn't put up much of a fight. It seems to be he can't move his back legs and we wondering if anyone knows other than the prednisone, something that we can use to help him . We don't have any and all vets are not in on Sunday. We called a couple of places and the Vet's are not in and the one place takes the wildlife from you . We want to release him back into our yard.

Does it appear that he has any external injuries? I have prednisone, but wouldn't be able to get it to you until Tuesday. What do our experienced members think? I think it is worth it to try even a couple of days out, but am not positive about that.

There are no external injuries . If you can get it to us that would be great .
I was searching on the web and they mentioned an alternative to prednisone would be Turmeric.
Would this be safe to use for future injuries?

I know that Pred cannot be given within 24 hours of I believe Ibuprofen. Hopefully others will weigh in. Is is Tramedol that CAN be given?

You can use either but not both Metacam/Meloxacam or Dexamethasone.

I personally have had very good results using Dex with paralyzed.

Tramadol is about the only safe pain relief with steroids.

Thank-you! I thought Tramadol was the only one with Prednisone. Pred is what we have to work with.

We just checked on him and he went under the fleece. He is spooked , his ears are pinched back. We aren't sure how long he was laying back there either. He was moving his from paws and tail when we were getting him, he took 2 nice nabs at Sandra's fingers. (1st was a warning , 2nd was pretty hard).

Gotta get fluids into him if possible. Watermelon, peeled grapes, apple and I would hold a water bottle up for him and see if he will drink. Even if you put it in under the covers to see if he licks it while you hold it for him. I will get the dose for the Tram.

Thanks. I will get some water in him. We have honey dew and tangerines which I will bring to him now as well.

As long as its just tramadol, its safe. I think some is combined with acetaminophen or something like that, and that is not safe. I would cite the source but i am at work and dont have access to my books. Does anyone else remember reading this?

Thank-you Kastillo!!! Be VERY careful that it is Tramadol as the only ingredient... How is this little one doing?

Hi Gardens! You've gotten really great advice so far. You know with these rear-end paralysis issues it goes only 2 ways. Most common, first way is that within 72 hrs the squirrel will pass, because the spine is severed and organs begin to break down slowly. On rare occasions the break is not in a critical place and the animal may regain some movement in legs and tail and can live for years. Pred is a great idea IMHO. Watch his bladder; if no pee is evident, you may have to express his bladder for him. When and IF hind leg & tail movement returns, bladder function will as well.

Well I think he's in bad shape....
He has no felling in his rear legs . When we pick up his tail it just drops. We gave him revolution and dosed him with Tramadol. He ate the block we put in there and the peanut stick. He had some water too from the syringe. He is very vicious. I got bitten really bad and it is impossible to hold him. He is squiggling his way out and is really impossible. I think we are going to have to bring him to a wildlife place. He is an older squirrel and it putting up a tough fight.

Does that mean no Prednisone needed?

Yes, sorry . When we went to give the water & meds he went right at me again . He really went after 2 of my fingers deep.
Maybe with the meds and water and revolution he will tame down a notch. He is upstairs now resting.
I thank you for the offer with the meds. I think we will see if the save the animals rescue will take him tomorrow.

Ouch, sorry about the bites. Have you seen the long metal feeding needles? They work really well for injuried adults because you can slip it through the cage bars and into the side of the mouth, all while keeping your fingers a safe distance from their chompers.

Never saw those, but wow, thanks what a great idea and def. wise. We will have to invest in those. :thumbsup

When we were giving him his meds, we were gently feeling each back leg and when we were touching the right back leg you can almost here a crunching as we were moving it to see if there was any reaction . Once we heard that, we stopped. His legs were just hanging there and there wasn't movement. We were touching the bottom of his back paws as well and there was no movement.

Food high in acid like citrus can cause urine scald.

I so wish I had something helpful to add or a trick to handle a wild. If you got the Tramadol into him, it will sedate him a little. The leg crunching makes me shudder. Hearing that he is eating and drinking is a little reassuring.

I know you both know this, but I found it helpful when I was reminded with MJ. Warm, Dark, Quiet, and make very slow smooth movements. Don't suddenly reach for this or that, act as fluid as possible. Oh, and keep his head covered, it really helped with MJ in the beginning. I do talk to MJ, but it's not my regular voice, I try be to as soft as possible, but not a whisper. Hopefully things will sort themselves out this morning for all of you.

Many prayers and positive thoughts headed your way from MJ and me! :Love_Icon:grouphug

Thank goodness there are two of you -- at least one can hold and one can examine :thumbsup.
Maybe Volunteers for Wildlife would be a good place to take him to? I know they give each squirrel a chance and don't just categorically euthanize. :)

He was in bad shape I have no idea how long he was out there. One thing for sure he would have been buried under 10 inches of heavy wet snow right now. As soon as I hear something I will let you know. :thankyou

Did the crunchy sound come from the leg or the hip arrea? I just wonder if his pelvis is shattered? Either way, i think that sound/feel is called crepidus (sp?), and an indicator of broken bones. Im sure you knew that :-) I hope the vfw can help him. Thank you for rescuing him.

They are very busy at the wildlife center but got a quick update. They said it doesn't look good and he he may be 100% paralysed. At least he wasn't buried alive in the snow we just got.

I wish I could....we will miss seeing you at the gathering. Nugget has been on antibiotics for a month now and is ready to come off them. We put new floors in the bedroom upstairs for Nugget and Terry so they get more sunlight. Maybe sometime in the summer we can come down for a visit. :thumbsup :grin3
