Can anyone identify what caused these injuries? Two of my wilds have shown up this week with identical looking wounds in almost. the exact same location. One squirrel has a single wound while poor Zaps here has two wounds. I think there is a maggot visible in the top wound? Not a Bot fly? Pellet gun? Bite?

Are you certain they are not bots?

Could it be an infected bite from another squirrel? In the pic it does look like a maggot, but the education I've received with MJ over the past week (seeing all kinds of things inside her leg) I wonder if it could be something other than a maggot. Maybe fatty tissue? Maybe pus?

TD, I am not sure where you are, but I think you are in the north, correct? Is it even bot fly season here? I think it may be too cold, no?

It was between 7 and 12 degrees for much of last week. I dont think bot flies are out in the winter?

There is a morph that had a single version of that injury in the exact same location.

The twin wounds on zaps makes me think it is probably not a pellet and the single wound on the morph makes me wonder if it is not a bite?

I am going to try and get a pic of the morph's injury, it might help to figure out what is going on.

If it is a bite, would it be two infected bites or a single bite (top and bottom teeth)? The two wounds are probably an inch or a little more than an inch apart.

I would think that as well.... must be something that burrows. There are guns that shoot 2 bullets at a time, but way too powerful for them to survive a hit...

The first time MJ bit me she only broke skin with her bottom teeth (one hole). The second time she got me with the tops and bottoms (two holes).

Pellets are also suspect, but with it being the beginning of mating season around here, I think I am leaning more towards bites.

I have never seen bites like these wounds in all the years I have been befriending wilds. Usually, a squirrel bite is smaller, with just a smidgen of hair missing right at the bite. Unless, the cold weather is causing these to get infected?

I am planning on dosing with cipro as much as I can. Not sure I will see these guys every day, in fact I am pretty sure I will not. Would you guys suggest dosing with Cirpro whenever possible? Or should I wait a bit and see if they start to heal up on their own?

TubeDriver, I don't know, I've never seen wounds like that with my wilds, either. When I've seen claw marks or bites from other squirrels, they certainly looked nothing like that. Do you know where these two injured ones have their nests? I was just wondering if it would be difficult to find them, in order to dose them each day? (as in, if they don't come to your house daily, is it impossible to go to their home area and find them for a dosed treat?) I know that's hard, though, if not impossible. Poor guys, I'm sorry they're hurt. :grouphug

Those injuries have opened up more from whatever initially caused them.
Obviously infected, appear a bit deep and don't look that old.
I'd have to try something to assist healing...

They look young... could be that their mother tried to relocate them in a hurry for some reason (lost nest, storm) ... this would be around the area she would grab them to carry... it could take a month or so to heal if they were deep. Its kinda cold for flys to be laying eggs... probably just tissue regeneration you are seeing

Bots normally leave a perfect exit hole, that looks jagged. Unlees an old bot hole got infected and the kid was vigorously cleaning it out. maggots are protein. I puked in my mouth a bit when my outside kids were sourounding a field mouse, that was dropped by a hawk onto our backyard. We had ONE kind of warm day. I stomped outside maggots galore! Sparrows were meanly fighting to clean them up too! THEN, I hear BOOM fizzle fizzle BOOM BOOM BOOM Reeeeeeeeeeeee. wtf? I stomped back inside, lol, like anyone cared about my stomping!? I call my Dad, who lives across the street. "DAD, DO YOU HEAR THAT? WTF IS IT?". Clearing throat, "Its me, a GD hawk tried to grab one a my doves, lousy bastards!". Me: what are you doing? Him: blasting off fireworks! Me: Cut it out! Him: laughing, why? you hate hawks! Me: just STOP IT, you are upsetting my squirrels. I don't like strange noises!!!!!!!!!!! THen crazy ex- police officer chuckles and I hear Boom. ME: GDit DAD! STOP! I will NOT bail you out! :nono It was his 9mm, that I had perfectly suited to me! Him: I saw Mr. K-9 when I went to coffee. ONLY YOU COULD FIND SQUIRREL PORN T-SHIRTS! Me: whattttttt? ( in my blinky blonde voice). Him: Don't you realize WHAT YOU DO AFFECTS YOUR PARENTS? Me: Yeah and vice versa smarty!:poke

Back to you TD, sorry to babble, its been a stressful afternoon....:grouphug
I can say, its not a 22. As our neighbor thought that it was ok to shoot chippies through the window. God thing that they were all legal atp. (from some Russian area place, no disrespect to anyone). A Pellet gun could thump hard enough. Then again, maybe its the illiusive Deerfield bat, that is searching for Notch to make him, immortal...lol...aka, ME! :grouphug:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I will wait and hate more pics, but we have to help them. Put some Capstr in their water bowl.:thumbsup

Make a sign that says, IF YOU HARM NOTCH< YOU ARE TOAST! YEAH ITS A THREAT!:thumbsupDunno where you are, but I have friends that will get me there!:thumbsup...without Daddy.:grouphug

:eek :grin2 Thanks for the encouragment!

I think I will just try to treat with an AB. I'll see how often these two squirrels come around. I got 3 Henry wild Bites in him plus some almonds so he got a good meal.

I dont think it is a pellet. It does not look like any squirrel bite I have ever seen. The wounds are circular in nature, lots of hair missing too. Cat bites look more like punctures.

I was thinking talon/claws from a Hawk too.
Had a hawk come down and try to get my free range chicken and her injuries looked similar to your photos.
Chicken had holes in her comb and side of her face. I put silvadene on her wounds and she recovered well.

We do have a hawk that visits occasionally.

I got some pics of my injured morph. The injury looks very similar to the other squirrel except not as deep of a wound?

It looks like it is as deep, but has filled with a scab. Eventually, the others will do the same.
