View Full Version : Bird caught in glue trap!!

A few minutes ago I was brought a bird rescued from a glue trap. I was on my way to get dawn to melt the glue when he/she BoJo I'm calling him was brought inside. He's breathing heavily, but his feet are unglued and there's a tiny tiny bit of glued feathers on the tip of his beak that I'm working on getting off.
He's smaller than a sparrow, not sure what he is
it looks like some of his skin was pulled off from the trap! his feet are red and missing a little bit of skin and his toes are curled in an unnatural way, but he's exercising them now that the glue is off
A few feathers are missing that look to be ripped off.
There were apparently 2 and this was the only survivor
Thoughts for the night??

Are you still looking for suggestions to get him off, I'm a little unclear?
Try a little bit of oil from what I remember, something like corn oil or olive oil, just a tiny bit on your fingers
to work the glue off.
Warm dark quiet for the bird, they freak out easily.
If you can cover eyes when trying to work on him, that would be helpful.
Just keep it quiet and put a heating pad under half his container.
Is this a baby or fully feathered?
Can you get a picture?

He's glue free!
He's breathing very very heavily and convulses a bit every second in a rhythmic pattern.
He's in a plastic critter container, 5ish gallons I'm guessing half on half on a heating pad. There's a little container of water in there for him and some very uneven, yet dull rocks for him to exercise his feet if he feels like it. I've got a piece of material in there, I didn't have fleece, but it's very tight woven so his claws can't get caught. He's sleeping right now, but I have a feeling he won't make it through the night. He can't fly either. Pics to follow.
Sorry Nancy, I was typing that as fast as I could to try to get the word out that I want advice that I'm sure it didn't even make sense.
Basically, I just want suggestions on making him as comfortable as possible right now. Pics to come shortly

You are doing beautifully.
When he convulses, does he appear to flip around? Is this like a seizure?
How is his beak?
As long as he is in a warm dark quiet area, I don't know of anything else you can do for him now.
Do you think he's young? Strange that two would get caught. :thnking

You could PM psychobird as she's a bird rehaber. You should do it now because I think she turn in very early, possibly already.

Warm, quiet, dark
Sounds like he is in shock
Fluids would be great if you know how to subQ a bird
Otherwise small dish of water, can put stones in it so its no too deep to prevent drowning
Small dish of mealworms and small dish of small seed
Pic would be good so we know what kind of bird he is so we know what he eats
Otherwise leave him alone till morning and resist the urge to check on him
Shock can kill

EDIT: Just saw your post, thank you psychobird! I have no idea how to subQ anything to be honest. I tried googling it at one point but I didn't find it helpful - is there a thread on here about it? The only kinds of seeds I have are black sunflower seeds, a mix of bird seed, and those colorful fruity pet bird pellets - no mealworms here :( Thank you for replying so fast!!
Thanks farrelli! I just PMed psychobird.
I'm not sure his age & I'm not even sure what type of bird he is. I'm by no means a bird expert, unfortunately. He looks similar to the pointy house wren, but not exactly. Based on the pointy house wren pictures, he's smaller (thinner) and his beak is much longer. His beak is perfectly fine! Not a scratch or glue bit on it. It's long like a hummingbird's beak.
I don't know where the glue trap was, but I know there used to be some in the propane bbq pit next to the house because a colony of mice made their nest in there. I hate those glue traps! :madd
Here's his pictures. He's still breathing!! yay!!!
His foot is still sorta discombobulated, but he stood on my finger for a while, so he has grip - and a good one too! He flipped around on my finger holding on by his feet. Once he figured out I was there to help, he just closed his eyes and let me do whatever I wanted to him - which gave me a good opportunity for pictures

Looks like a Carolina wren, mealworms and bugs for diet
If he makes it thru the night he will need to go to a Rehabber
He needs medical attention

There's absolutely no rehabber that accepts birds in my surrounding area on the website :( Soon as he was de-glued I checked...the closest vet that accepts them is a few hours away, but I don't know if they accept wilds - I'll call and check soon as they open...
This is horrible :(

I so feel your pain. I've been in the same spot with several geese. At least your little guy is, well, little. Can you give him a home until he's well?

I'll do everything I can to give this little guy a home until he can fly again! I'm sure my roommates won't mind breaking the rules for this sweetheart :Love_Icon I'll be heading back to the university Monday with 2 new roommates, so I honestly don't know how this'll work and I would really rather not transport him if he isn't going to a professional, but no one else here can care for him [FOB]. I'll definitely keep y'all posted and thanks sooo much for the help :Love_Icon Updates in the morning!! :thankyou

Check to see if you have an Audubon Society office near you. If you do, they will take him and give him the medical care he needs.

Thank you for all the info and helpful tips, but this little one didn't make it through the night :( He was chirping a little bit this morning before I got up, but soon as I actually woke up and checked on him, he just curled up in my hand and died about 2 minutes later.
Thank y'all again for your help :thankyou

Lots of rehabbers won't be on the list, we get slammed without it
Call vets, shelters, mammal rehabbers ect.
With these tiny ones if broken bones are set and immobilized in less than 48 hrs that's it, they will heal wrong and it will seal his fate
You may have to drive a couple of hours to get him help
Did he make it thru the night?

Thanks for the tips on how to find a rehabber not on the list! I'll definitely write that down and save it just in case I ever need it again. Now it's time to go see what can be done about those glue traps >_>

Glad you're making sure more little birds aren't killed. Glue traps are evil. Thank you so much for caring for the poor little bird and easing it's passing.
