So Ambrose decided to start chewing on the bottom corner of the tray in his cage - right after I left.
I won't be back till tomorrow and we all know how fast they can chew a hole to get though. No one else can handle him and once the tray is removed to put the grate above it, there will be no bottom!
So until tomorrow, does anyone have an idea that can be a quick fix until I get over there?

I do not want to assume what cage you are using.
And from your description I cannot tell what you are describing.
What confuses me is removing the tray that was chewed, to put a grate above it.
Please elaborate and provide photo.

Oops, sorry, I was typing that as I was being told what the issue was and didn't revise it before I submitted it XD
Lack of sleep does wonders for explaining things, right?
Okay, let's try this again:
This is his cage: 220945 220946
At the bottom, I can put a grate and/or a tray to catch droppings. I could have sworn I read somewhere months ago that the grate messes with their little feet, so I just put a big fleece Snuggie (that's all they're good for anyway! XD) in the tray until I'm able to get some real fleece. The tray came cracked, which I fixed temporarily, but am getting a new one from the company. Naturally, he found the crack and began tearing at it and has now made a small hole in it.
Since no one else can handle him, does anyone have any quick suggestions on how to prevent him from chewing that side until I'm able to fix it tomorrow?
Sorry for the confusion!

Looking around to try to edit this and delete the thread - guess I missed that window?
Anyway, distraction was the best method! Distract him with something nice to chew on while the switch was made ^^

Deffinatley take out the plastic bottom, the grate is fine, just put lots of fleece on the bottom, he will like hiding and digging around in it :grin3, you dont want plastic anything in his cage, when they chew it ( and they will) little hard pieces can get stuck in their throats.
So PLastic BAD, Fleece GOOd. , Nice cage !!!

I knew the plastic wasn't good for them at all, but I didn't want his little footsies to get damaged! I didn't think he'd dig up the fleece so much that he would make a mess out of it [and find the plastic underneath [what was I thinking??]) - everyone's fleece in their pictures here looks so nice and organized! :grin2
But all is well now ^^
