Is this little squirrel too young to be out on his own?

Recently, I have seen a little, tiny squirrel hanging around. He is probably half the size of all my other wilds. He zips in to grab a treat, stays away from the other wilds. I see him burying stuff foraging in my yard, and he looks alert and fit it is just that he is so tiny. Picture might not really capture ho small this squirrel is. Could he be a dwarf squirrel? I am a little worried about him as it is about to become really cold and snowy. He has been hanging out on my porch all morning looking in my window begging for almonds. He is super cute.:)

In the past few weeks I've noticed some much younger ones
coming around to my feeders I haven't seen before, also quite
smaller then my regulars. Late babies I suppose, I trust they
will be alright as yours will be. I'd just keep an eye on him as
the weather turns, you'll know if you need to intervene...

Good to know. This little one knows where to come to for almonds and walnuts. :) Might get some Henries Wild bites later this winter if conditions get bad.

He seems big enough to be out on his own......maybe just a late season squirrel, so keep the food a coming.

I agree. He looks very healthy and has a good, rough coat for our part of the world. :)

yes, this is little Frederick. He is about half the size of an adult squirrel. He is fast and very brave and can handle himself around the bigger squirrels. I have seen him get chased but he usually gets away and then comes back later. I have not seen him since we got the original snow and cold temps about a week ago. :(

Last winter there was fall baby who always dissapeared in cold and snowy weather , he always reappeared afterwards .
I fully understand your concerns and hope he will come out again as soon as the temperatures go up a little . A prayer going your way
