I have sent a message to Mandi, but I thought I needed to let you all know too. Nuts was put down today. They wouldn't listen to anyone but the State. This is so sad and so unnecessary! I just don't know what else to say.

Imprinted Eastern Gray Squirrel

December 4, 2013 – In the fall of 2013, Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (NWRC) received an Eastern Gray squirrel that was being illegally raised by humans. As a result, the squirrel became imprinted and no longer afraid of people. NWRC spent weeks and many of its resources trying to reverse the effects of the imprinting but were unsuccessful. They also pursued the route of making the squirrel an educational animal but during these weeks the squirrel became aggressive, very dangerous to work with and even attacked people. Do to the danger this squirrel posed to the public, its lack of fear for people and its inability to survive on its own, the squirrel could not be released back into the wild. NWRC contacted Fish & Wildlife and the Health Department for their input in this situation and both agencies agreed with NWRC that the squirrel could not be released into the wild. With a heavy heart NWRC had no choice but to euthanize this animal.

NWRC would like to take this time to remind the public that if you find a wild animal that is either injured or an orphan the best course of action is to contact them right away. With their fast action, trained staff and proper medical equipment they can provide the best possible care for these animals. NWRC does everything possible to treat every animal that is brought into them and because of their determination they have a very successful re-release rate. NWRC encourages people to check out their website to learn more about interacting with wildlife when unusual situation accrue.
