Yesterday morning, Niki, my grey was out playing around with the dog as usual. I noticed a "tuff" of hair on the floor. Apparently that dog stepped on his tail & part of it came off!!!! :hurt The hair is still intact on a layer of skin. it's like the end just slipped off. He has 1/2 the shaft of his tail expose & it started bleeding. I cleaned it of with a steril pad but the rest of his tail fur has caked around it. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, it just looks bad. What can I do to keep infection down & will the hair ever grow back. I feel so bad for him. He only has 1/2 a tail. Is this sort of thing normal? I feel like such a bad mommy. :sad

There are many threads here on broken tails its a common thing. Squirrels were created like that to be able to break free from predators in time of need. My Rippie has only a 1/2 of tail but he still has my whole heart.:Love_Icon They look pitiful but it should be just fine.

He does look bad. He looks like one of those ruffed up squirrels in the woods. I'm gonna miss his long fluffy tail!

i've got a squirrel (not a pet, rehab) with half a tail right now. it's common, and any dead tissue should shrivel up and fall off. i don't think he needs antibiotics as long as you keep it clean. bacitracin cream is good for that type of thing. if you're really worried you could try wrapping it with medical cloth, but i don't think you have to go that far.
in the meantime, spoil him with nuts and tell him he's still beautiful. :D
