This sweetie came in last night late. One eye JUST opened so she's young but she weighs about 135 grams. The finder gave her some pedialyte and I've offered some dilute formula. She likes Pedialyte. She does NOT like formula. I noticed she's got a snotty nose and is snorffley. I think she had a sneeze when she came in last night. She doesn't act like she feels good.

I need to get a better picture of her. I gave her some SMP TMZ and hopefully that will help her sniffle. She's a stocky girl and big enough to be a fox squirrel--not that I know foxers but I look at pictures. We don't have foxers in these parts but this girl sure is big enough. I'll be interested to watch her get bigger. Just gotta get her healthy and eating. She's on heat. What can I offer her to tweak her appetite. Molasses isn't doing it for her. Any suggestions are gratefully welcomed. This may not be an emergency--but I don't want it to become one if it isn't.

Pat I have had to a time or two mix some
molasses into my fox valley when all they
wanted was molasses water. Then wean
them off the molasses.

I'd make sure her nose is really clear. If she can't breath well, she won't eat well. Suck out anything that's in there w/ a baby bulb syringe. I like to use saline drops, one tiny drop in each nostril will help reduce inflammation and dry up secretions.

Good thing is she started eating. She's still snotty but she's not blocked at least--just snotty. Little dickens must feel better. She's WIGGLY. I was trying to get a pix to show how big she is--NOT cooperating. My hands are small but you can see she's a handful--and she opened her eyes last NIGHT. She's bigger than Pinkman and he's a shrimpy 13 weeks--and bout as big as Willimina and she's 8--9 weeks old. I love her little black nose!

Is this a gray squirrel? Her tummy is comin in brown/orange. Girl is gettin better (I think) She's the noisiest little squirrel I've ever had.

The whitish places on her tummy are being replaced with the darker fur. I can't think of other varieties of squirrels in these parts besides good ol Eastern gray, but she sure is different from other 5 week old gray babies I've had.

I've never heard of foxers in our area tho we do have them in parts of Virginia and everything seems to be shifting around so I dunno. Whatever she is, she's a talker.

A very sweet little girl has gone to her last sleep. She came with me to a wildlife conference last weekend. She was getting Baytril and a steam bath three times a day to help her breathe. Saturday she rallied. Sunday she started going downhill. A very kind vet at the wildlife Center of Virginia checked her out and an x-ray showed her lungs were so compromised that one lobe was collapsed. On top of that she was hydrocephalic. Poor sweetie didn't have a chance. I left her with them on oxygen and getting meds to give her the best possible opportunity to get better. I got a call yesterday morning that she was evaluated by a gang of visiting vets, students and every vet at the center. My baby was suffering. She isn't anymore. Had she kicked the infection I would have brought her home to spend her short life in pampered comfort. The fluid buildup on her brain would have killed her in less than a year. Of course it's hard to say if the condition was painful. A life of pain is no option so while I'm sad she's gone, I'm not sad I got to meet her, give her unconditional love, and in the end, set her free. Run baby girl. You have friends to welcome you at the bridge.

Yup--big baby is gone. Pinkman, on the other hand is a very feisty little boy--underline LITTLE. He looks like an 8 week old squirrel. Big baby was about the same size. He's growing tho and full of piss and vinegar so I have high hopes for the boy.

Thanks to all my wonderful TSB friends. It's hard to let go even when the right thing is the peace of death. I heard so many people at the wildlife conference talk about how they just "can't do it anymore" because they can't stand the pain. Then there are the rehabbers who will put a baby down because it has a hurt leg or just doesn't seem right. Who's hands would you want to be in if you were the patient? Has anybody here NOT known the gut wrenching pain of losing a beloved squirrel? Would anybody trade that pain for a life of squirrelless bliss? There's a passage in the Bible that goes "as you do to the least of these, so you do unto me". I'm not a Bible thumper but that passage is mirrored in the enlightened passages of so many of the world's traditional philosophical and religious texts. It may be a guidepost for saving our planet and surviving as humanity--rather than merely the world's most dangerous predator.

You tried your best in a situation that was essentially preordained. It is the very act of trying your best to help another little creature that is noble, loving and kind. As long as there are people who try to do what is right and good, we have hope and a chance for a better future! The pain you feel is a sign of your loving heart and nothing would be worse than not caring or feeling anything. Thanks you for helping this little one. :grouphug Gods Speed Big Baby.
