We got home from a friends and Jax is acting very strange. Hes not jumping around the cage like normal, he seems dizz, unbalanced even. He cant seem to keep his eyes open or to move around. I dont hear cclicking. He ate at 5:30pm. He eats fv 20/50 and his blocks. He fell out of the nest on8/8/13 approximately at the age of 2 weeks.

First thing: wrap and hold him gently and rub some molasses or maple syrup on his gums. He may be hypoglycemic. Check his water bottle -- is it working? Offer him some hydration -- water or homemade Pedialyte. How is his fur? Spiky looking or normal?

Spikey fur.
Gave syrup. Tried sugar water, he didnt take it.

Spiky fur often means dehydration. Try the Pedialyte, diluted juice, or even full strength juice (too much can cause loose stools). Dehydration and/or low sugar can cause a bad spiral.

I am now. She told me to contact her if he gets worse.
I am one worried momma though.

I really questioned her about everything I could think of. I've got her trying to hydrate, but pinch test says he's not dehydrated. He peed an extra lot earlier with a more pungent smell. Animals will hold their urine too long when it hurts to pee, then gush it out when they can't hold it anymore. UTI is a possibility. Since nothing else really happened I had her start Cipro. Continue to try to hydrate. The UT having issues can give the same symptoms as dehydration. I've told her to keep a close eye on him in case it is post seizure behavior. Also, she's supposed to let me know if anything looks even a tiny bit worse. If worse, I'll get on the phone with Jackie for one and I'll find her a Vet somewhere for 2. That's really all I have to offer her at this point. Hoping it's the UTI and that the Cipro will flush it. I'll tell her to pick up a small bottle of cranberry juice to see if she can hydrate some and flush the kidneys that way. Toxin build up in kidneys can also cause the dizziness and lethargy. I hope to hear her calling and squealing that he's feeling better by morning, if not earlier :tilt

I think he is dehydrated. The wobblyness and spiky fur are all symptoms. His water bottle may be clogged...or if you use a dish, maybe he overturned it?

I know I've been MIA, but I've gotten dangerously behind in school and my instructors are working with me to very generously help me catch up. I've explained to them and they apparently understand. So, since they're being great to me about this, I don't want to screw it up. I have to be on top of the books as much as possible. Going to try to get caught up really quickly but it will be a minimum of a coupleof weeks. I'll come on if you guys need me, but otherwise I'm staying off b/c the Board sucks me in and before I know it HOURS are gone. I just don't have those hours right now. Those of you that have my number, feel free to call if you need my help or whatever...I'll get on, I'm still helping, just not constantly lurking like I was.

Sorry to thread jack Chey!!

Guys, I can't think of anything else. She's near Fort Worth, TX. Do we have a Vet anywhere near there??? Someone has to know a Vet, even if they have to travel a bit, that sees squirrels. Or a rehabber that would be a GEM and take Jax under their permit?!? :grin2

I PMd some admins to see if we know anyone in the area.

Do you have any antibiotics? I wonder if it would be wise to start them in case of infection.

Did you try the molasses?

Yes! She found a Vet and has an appt at 1:30 our time. She started the Cipro last night b/c he was weak, wouldn't eat formula or block, had peed a big smelly pee, pinch test was negative for dehydration, and nothing appeared out of sorts. Told her it couldn't hurt to get him started and if he wasn't better by this morning that we would get YOU involved!!! Hence the email. I gave it to her. I also gave her the ml/mg and dosage to write down to take to the Vet with her. I told her to continue to try to push fluids but she was having trouble getting him to take anything.

Jackie- Sorry it took me a day to get back to you. I was traveling for work. I have a vet in the DFW area that will see a squirrel with no questions asked. Do we have a place where this information is stored? If someone will send me a PM, I would be happy to contribute the info.

Okau. I just got home.
They said he had a bacterial infection and had parasites in his fecal test.
They gave him some sort pf shot to hydrate him and another for anti nausea? Gave me nutra cal and some powder thats like a pro biotic.
Everyonr in there loved him to bits and i heard stories how everyone had a squirrel. They dont judge you there. They are very nice people. Definitely going back if anythinghappens again
