View Full Version : Recipes for treats?
So I'm thinking about Christmas presents for my spoiled little squirrel, being blind she doesn't care for toys but does like her food so I thought I could bake something nice for her but I have no idea what to put in!
So I'm after some recipes healthy or unhealthy (very small amount of course!) for some treats I can bake her for Christmas :)
any suggestions will be much appreciated :grin2
BOO BALLS http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?28096-Momma2boo-s-Boo-Ball-Recipe&highlight=BOO+BALLS I THINK SOME VARIATIONS OF THE RECIPE APPEAR FARTHER ON IN THE THREAD.
Try one or so of these! I don't think the person who can up with the Squirrel Block Cookies will mind that I shared.:grin3 My guys really love these!

Squirrel Block Cookies
*1 cup* ground rodent chow -I use any kind I have Mazuri, Lab block, KayTee forti diet, Monkey biscuits or combination of these)
*1/2 cup ground pecans- You can use almonds, walnuts, filberts, etc.
*1 or 1 ½ tablespoon( rounded) peanut butter - smooth kind. I cut the peanut butter in with 2 forks.
*1/3 cup of applesauce no sugar added. If dough is dry add a little more applesauce or water. Just a little.
*1 tablespoon molasses (optional) I always use it in mine
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. The dough will look like cookie dough.
I take out part of the dough and flatten it to about a 1/4 of an inch thick and cut 1”x2” rectangle “cookies”. The cookies kind of resemble a double Cheese It cracker) Place them on a cookie sheet and Bake at 225 degrees in the oven for 1 hour. Turn off the oven and let them stay in the oven until cooled. They will crisp in the oven as they cool.
You can substitute any kind of baby food for the applesauce . I sometimes use baby food sweet potatoes, peaches, plums, or any kind the squirrels will eat. I have even added mashed avocado or mashed sweet potato in the recipe too.
You can also add ½ cup of FV powder to the mix. You would just need to up the apple sauce or add a little water to make it like cookie dough.
**MY SQUIRRELS FIGHT OVER THESE LIKE THEY WERE PLAIN PECANS. They love them.
Just a note: I grind my block and pecans (or other nuts) in a coffee grinder or food processor. If you have trouble with pieces of block or pecans not grinding then just place them in a plastic bag and smash them with a hammer or mallet before placing in the processor or coffee grinder. Smashing them up first helps them to grind evenly into a fine powder. Also over a few weeks you can reduce the nuts and peanut butter if you like . Soon you will end up with rodent block, applesauce, a 1/4 cup of nuts, molasses and just enough peanut butter to hold it all together. I place pieces of plain block in the bowl in the cage with the cookies too. Soon the squirrels will get use to the taste of the block and begin to eat the plain block when the cookies are gone. Mine do. It takes a few weeks though.
Also, if your squirrel is not use to block, then I would up the nuts to 1 cup equal to the block. You might need to up the applesauce a little too just because you are adding more dry ingredients. Leave every thing else in the recipe the same. Once your squirrel is eating the cookies you can reduce the nuts back down very slowly over a few weeks or month or so. As I stated above soon the squirrel will begin to eat the block plain when it gets use to the taste.
I hope your squirrel (s) like them. They smell so good as they bake.

Anne, How do you recommend storing the cookies? This sounds like a great recipe!
Store in your freezer. Putting them in the refrigerator will cause them to go stale quickly.:grin2
I see the other recipes didn't come through.
Gamma’s Scones for squirrels:
2 cups flour
4 Tbs. Vegetable, or Coconut Oil
2 cups Quaker Oats/ or steel cut Oatmeal(not quick cooking)
1 cup bird seed
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup cheerios, corn flakes, special k, or total
12 crushed Rodent Block
6 crushed calcium 600 mg pills
1 cup goats milk/ or puppy replacement milk powder
I keep adding Strawberry Pediasure/Ensure until it all sticks together like a dough, kneading it for about 5 minutes. I put teaspoon size pieces on a baking sheet, and bake them for about 10 minutes at 350, or until golden brown.
Avocado Ice Cream
12 ounces avocado meat, approximately 3 small to medium
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice( keeps avocado green)
1 1/2 cups mixed Fox Valley 32/40
1 cup heavy cream
Peel and pit the avocados. Add the avocados, lemon juice, milk, and sugar to a blender and puree. Transfer the mixture to a medium mixing bowl, add the heavy cream and whisk to combine. Place the mixture into the refrigerator and chill until it reaches 40 degrees F or below, approximately 4 to 6 hours.
Process the mixture in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer's directions. However, this mixture sets up very fast, so count on it taking only 5 to 10 minutes to process. For soft ice cream, serve immediately. If desired, place in freezer for 3 to 4 hours for firmer texture.

Thanks Anne! Adding these to my recipe book right now. I have one of those "family" books where you add your own recipes. One entire section is nothing but recipes for squirrel foods, formulas, and basic care instructions so I don't have to search through threads. It's amazing how you can forget some info in between spring and fall litters. Getting older sucks, lol!
Thanks for the recipes :)
Not sure how much of that I can actually get over here but I will try! I'm sure I can find most of the ingredients for the scones so they will be first on my list to try out :grin2
Being in the UK, you are quite familar with scones :grin. Wait till your tell someone you are making SQUIRREL scones!:jump:jump:rofl4:rofl4:rofl4

I'm not just in the UK but the south west we don't just have scones, we go all out and have cream teas :grin3
I remember the UK. Oh how I miss some things, like the clotted cream, kippers and eggs for breakfast, bangers and mash, and the wonderful sandwiches and sweets with tea at 5:00! I have many fine memories of the times I spent there, especially at pony camp. :grin It has been more than 40+ years since I was there, but I had such lovely times. An Irish fox hunt---not so much!
