hi guys, this is my second thread about plantain squirrel.
i need some handy advice about raising a squirrel (baby squirrel, still learning to eat.) and indeed im open this thread to share my squirrel story.

here's my story,
about last month i just bought a plantain squirrel
and 4 days ago, i got him to the pet caring becoz i have to go out of town for a couple day.
when i came back to town, and going to the pet caring meeting point to take my beloved Bro.
guess what? they lost him, :cry
here's they story :
"we have some cats here, and the cat weren't caged so we left for 5 mins, and came back with your squirrel cage open.
i guess he went to the forest, becoz our place have a backyard forest. now, we're not sure if he would coming back,
coz its been two days. Im, we really sorry about that sir. so, for the responsibility we would be very glad to let you take
our squirrel, he's a plantain squirrel too. or, we got another option, its up to you sir, what are you demand us to do?"

i was speechless, and i dunno what to do either.
i take a look to the squirrel inside Bro's cage. well, it seems they didnt expected that to happen either,
and im too weak to say no to them. so i accept him, immediately go to take him home.
His name is Steve the Step Brother.

im still confused about My Bro age, and Steve age.
the both of em is totally different :cry
I bought Bro from a birds market, the seller told me that he's two months old more/less. now, he's 3 months old.
he's seems bigger and more mature than Steve.
Steve is 3 months old, the woman told me that they bought him from a seller that told em he's about two months old. and they already sitting him about 1 month.

so, in short way, they age 3months old depending on what i explained before.
the difference is that Bro is bigger than Steve, Bro eat banana and other food like a boss (he chew them all) in contrast Steve is just like licking/sucking the banana (he cant or dont eat another food i used to feed Bro),
Bro's tail is already bloomed, Steve got a mouse tails with fur look alike.
so, i think they werent at the same age at all. it could be the dirty seller sold me a (3 month older squirrel) or Steve is +- 2 months younger.
i asked the woman, about what do they feed Steve. They said, they feed him banana. my intuition said, he need some milk (baby caring situation) and banana is too soon for him to consume.

how about you guys? what's your opinion and what i should do? :confused

P.S :
pls pardon my bloody english, im asian (indonesia) after all and still learning english.
btw, i fed Bro cucumber(fav), banana, and orange. <<<priority cucumber.
i cant afford to buy some import squirrel formula, and i couldnt find a pet store that sells some.

You can read my first thread "water to drink"

Welcome again mate..
All i wanna say for the beginning is, please don't see your squirrel as a "pet" but the part or your family, an individual!
Hope this little one does not go 'missing' as the previous one ;(

Don't forget, they are not domestic animals, they are wild animals and they will never get 100% tame. He may bite you when scared or without any reason! Just don't forget, that's in his nature!

Mia and I are together for 5 years now. She loves and trusts me, i am her comfort zone. But i still cannot say she is tame 100%. She still does not lep me pick her from above and if i do, she bites me and draw blood!

Just accept he is a wild animal with insticts and be patient about trust thing!
It may take a year or more to gain his trust.

Good luck...

It sounds like he's very young and could maybe still be needing formula. Do you have goat's milk and/or yogurt there? If so, here is a recipe to make formula.

http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?29903-Do-NOT-USE-ESBILAC!-**TEMPORARY-Goat-s-Milk-Formula***

I know that many countries also carry Royal Canin puppy formula, which would also be good. Can you get that?

I would really call this place back up and ask for some formula for free if they have it. They killed your baby!

Oh, also, here's a link to basic baby care. he may need some hydration and a heat source to keep warm. Can you post a picture?

its called Taman ragunan (i got some friends from forum that have caring squirrels, released to that place)
Ty Mia's mom.
btw, pls say hello to Mia from me. . . :D

Yeah, i got yogurt in the nearest mini market. About goat's milk, im gonna find out.
whats the meaning : 3 goat's milk? do i have to buy the three ingridients or just choose 1?

i cant tell em to find some formula needed. it would be really hard for them i think, maybe lemme find it instead. [im such a pathetic weak person, aint I? T_T )

Big thanks Farelli!

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

This means that you would add them together in the stated ratio. For example, if you were going to make a giant batch and measured things in liters (you'd never make one this big, it's just an example) you'd mix together 3L of goat's milk, 1L of heavy whipping cream, and 1L of yogurt. If you were making a very small batch and were measuring in CCs, you'd mix together 3ccs of goats milk, 1cc of cream, and 1cc of yogurt. It's all about the ratios, get it?

Also, for the first few feedings you'd leave out the cream because it can cause diarrhea. The reason that its added is because squirrels usually have relatively large fat requirements.

You might be better off getting the Royal Canin if you can find it though.

You might try the yogurt alone if you can't find the other ingredients. Sweetened is fine if plain isn't tasty enough.

What is a factory yogurt? Store bought? Like in America? If so, that's fine. Most seem to like vanilla flavor. Full fat, not fat free.

You can offer it in a syringe or dish one or twice a day. Is he eating fine otherwise?

He can't live on fruit alone. I hope you get him eating more things very, very soon. Have you reviewed the nutrition thread?

Then yougrt should suit him fine. Have you tried to find Royal Canin?

Have you checked his teeth to make sure they're OK? Are they in good shape? Are they too long and hurting the roof of his mouth? Too short? Or maybe he's just too young for solids. Can you post a pic?

farrelli, I googled "plantain squirrel" before going through this thread; it does appear this species does consume quite a bit of fruit? Ridle, is this the species of squirrel you have?

You might want to PM stosh2010 about his squirrels. They are also fruit based squirrels (Costa Rica) and he might have some tips.

sorry, i just re read the thread. and found your post which i've never read before.
i think its fine, i checked the teeth from the first time i handle him.
ik some dirty squirrel used to cut the teeth a lil(so it look like a friendly/"tamed" squirrel to buyer when they try to handle 'em), but sometimes it goes wrong and got the squirrel top teeth full cutted.

Steve's teeth is shorter on top, about half his bottom teeth.
he used to do sharpening teeth move while asleep, (do some friction bottom teeth vs top, and its a lil bit shaky on my hand lol) << i do worry about that, but i dont know what to do and always forgot to mention it

i already have some pic, but i dont have a usb data for my phone since im using PC, i couldnt send it any other way.
but soon i will post some.
