Absolutely as long as you warm him up first. He needs to be warm before he drinks anything.

Ok, I am not sure if I have a boy or girl but is eyes closed, not visible signs of puncture wounds. He took the water and peed good. I am new to flyers, I did not know we had them here. I will take pictures and post tomorrow. I know they have different eating habits from grey squirrels but do they still take the goat fomula, and with fox valley do I need to order tonight?:thankyou

Same formula I believe. I just sent Mrs. Skul a PM asking her to come take a look at the thread. If you can take a phone pic and text it to me I can post it now. 203 214-7427

Heat first - heating pad half under a plastic container (cardboard drys them out), hydrate every 2 hours or more until hydrated, then start the GM formula but leave out the whipping cream for the first day. Going to try and get Uni to come in since she is in the middle of Alabama and may be the closest one that might have meds.

They are nice and toasty, they both took sugar water good. Since their eyes are open is there anything I need to get for them tomorrow? I got goat milk formula. gotta find how to mix I don't remember. I think they are little boys. I will take pictures tonight and post them tomorrow. I am going to go check the monkey grass again to make sure I didn't miss one they are so tiny.

If the goat's milk calls for mixing it with water do that. Right now that should be all you need. Reminder though that fleece or flannel is recommended over towels that can catch little nails. Proper feeding technique too, head up, belly and tail down and nipple coming up from underneath the squirrel to prevent aspirating them. Go slow. A 1cc syringe is best when they are this size. GM formula should be warm too, never cold. Stick syringes in a baggie and submerge in a cup of hot water. If you don't use the baggie then sometimes the hot water will switch places with the formula, diluting it.
Yay for your boss!

There is a possibility that there could be more, so keep checking. Yay 3 flyers!!!
One more thing to get is unscented/sensitive skin baby wipes. They need faces cleaned after every feeding so the formula won't "burn" their fur off.

I'm horrible at weight guesstimation ALN. What do you think? 20g???
Unikorngrrl
10-06-2013, 05:49 PM
What mg is the Cipro and I can give you the breakdown. It will have to be broken down and then diluted. They're too tiny... Mine and ALN's are bigger than those. I'm guessing at weight by the length and fullness of the fur. The cat caught baby needs to be on ABs yesterday!!!! I can't stress to you how quickly these tiny tiny ones go down...I had to watch it and it's horrible to watch...

Uni, I wouldn't even want to guess. Maybe another pic with a quarter or something in it for size reference would help get close. Maybe a neighbor might have a food scale so we could get an accurate weight before morning. Time is essential.

I not have cipro I have cephalexin. can that be used.
Let me check the book...
The book says:
Cipro--"uses for cat attack, UTI, respiratory infections, bone infections, soft tissue, skin and external ear infections."
Cephalexin --"gram-positive bacterial infections, especially those of the skin, soft tissue, genitourinary tract and with possible bone infections."
Your call...

Bamababies, could you please call Uni? It's really time consuming trying to keep up with posts when she has so many little ones in her care. A quick phone call could answer a lot of questions you may have. She's great to work with.
Cat saliva is toxic to these little ones and they can go down FAST! Time is critical right now and even if the cat didn't get to all of them it's better to start meds just in case. We are all here to help since we love these little ones so much and just want to see another success story. We have all had to deal with too many losses on the board that could have been prevented. There were 5 in the litter my boys came from but they were the only ones to make it and that was only because Uni got them just in the nick of time. They were in pretty bad shape but she turned them around and I carried on what she started.

Just checked on this thread.
YES, please get in touch with Uni, she knows flyers.
I know cat bites/saliva and you need Cipro/Baytril asap.
These babies are going to be a lot of work getting up every 2 hours to feed,
and then going to work
Is there someone in your area that could take them?
These little ones are a lot more fragile than greys, and I really
hate the thought of them going back and forth to work, and
possibly getting a chill.
Do you have 1 cc syringes and nipples?
I recently got some little reds 9 to 11 grams, the three of them.
They took forever to feed as they took such a small amount with
ever swallow, and you have to go REALLY slow to avoid aspiration.
Good luck finding someone, or keeping them.
I suggest finding someone, they will wear you ragged.....:grin2
Whatever you do, the one thing that is of the utmost importance, is
to get them some Baytril or Cipro, it will save their life, without that,
if a cat is involved, even the saliva WILL kill them.

I am so sorry my computer went down yesterday. All babies are doing great, I now have a total of 4 babies ,2 boys 2 girls. They are eyes open from what I found yesterday I would guess their age about 5 to 6 weeks. Since I was unsure I did not give meds. But there is not sign of any wounds on they babies, also She was not wet when I found her so I do not believe at all that the cat had time to get her in his mouth. I have feed them every 4 hours and will get a weight on them. I have a few pictures I will try to post in a few. Thank you all so much, I am sorry my stupid computer cord went bad and I couldnt charge my laptop. I gotta go get a new code today.

10-07-2013, 08:53 AM
Sorry to hear about the cord. Congrats on finding #4, I am glad you kept looking. Just my opinion but just the fact that a cat was near them I would err on the side of caution and start meds. All it takes is one tiny scratch that may be hidden in the fur for these little ones to be compromised. From experience, they can seem to be doing well one minute and then crash quickly. It's amazing how fast it can happen even when you know what to watch for.

They are all still eating great, play pouching on each other. They are doing wonderful. I found myself checking the yard, sheds, just trying to figure out where these babies came from. I have not seen the cat back around my house, I got him with the water hose. here are their weighs today. I lost the weigh I wrote down yesterday
Lucy 22.8 grams
Lula 24.0 grams
Luke 23.2 grams
Lion 22.1 grams (he growls @ me)

Glad to hear that! You would be amazed at some of the places a flyer will build a nest. Have you started any meds? Maybe the cat got the mom and they came out looking for her when they got hungry. How much are they taking at each feeding? Keep a close watch on the weights to make sure they are gaining steady. I weigh every day to every other day and mine were averaging a 1-2 gram per day gain.

My sister did not have any meds left over but Uni i think is going to send me some, they are all fine but in case I ever run into this again I would like to have meds on hand. My boss said I could have the scales because we dont use them anymore. Since they are taking the formula good should I start them on blocks?
ALittleNutty
10-08-2013, 11:45 AM
Uni is great! She is the one who gave me my boys a few weeks ago. It would be better to have the meds on hand so that at the first sign of trouble there is no loss of time. Even with experience and meds on hand they can be lost fast! She lost her precious Zara and had a hard struggle to pull Rayne through the same thing. It's so hard when you lose one.
Great boss letting you keep the scale!
Yes, you can go ahead and put the blocks in. At first they may not do anything but pee on them or just shred them but then they will start eating them. At this point nothing but formula and blocks should be offered as blocks will be one of the most important parts of their future diet plan. ONLY after they are eating the blocks for several weeks do you start adding veggies. Offer formula as long as they will take it. Some will take it even as adults, my Rascal loved it. If they do stop taking it you can always mix the FV powder into yogurt to add calcium which is essential. We often want to spoil them with treats of fruit or nuts too soon and then we end up with SPOILED "brats" :grin2 who won't eat their veggies or blocks. It's like giving a human child candy and then expecting them to eat spinach and you know how that turns out. Flyers will also need protein in the form or meal or wax worms, cooked egg whites, chicken cooked without seasonings and they can even have a small bone to gnaw on.
Here is the link to the diet sticky in the Flyer Forum under Breed Specific. http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?37700-HEALTHY-DIET-for-PET-Flying-Squirrels
Their eyes have probably just opened within the last day or two.
They're still a bit young for solid foods.
Offering a small bit of nut or apple, won't hurt them a bit. Go ahead and do it.
Please remember, you still must feed them on a regular basis.
They really won't be ready for solids for a few more weeks.

I have not offered them any solids yet I am waiting on my HHB, I did lay a branch in there for them to play on and chew on. They seem to love it.
