Hi Everyone! What a wonderful board! I am so excited to have found you. I am happy to know that there are other people out there that are just as nuts (no pun intended) about animals as me. I found my little guy on 8/22/13 (I believe he was about 5 wks). He was laying on the sidewalk and I thought he was dead. He was very cold and I warmed him with a cat heating pad and rehydrated him with Pedialyte. After searching on the internet I bought Esbilac powdered formula and mixed it 1 part formula to 2 parts warm water and added a few teaspoons heavy whipping cream. Well...he is doing great and growing by leaps and bounds and could sure use some of your expertise.

Currently, he is eating the Esbilac 3 times a day about 10-20 ccs at a time. I have introduced Henry's Squirrel Blocks Growth Formula. I offer him one block in the morning and one in the evening. He doesn't like it much. He seems to do better if I cut it in 3 smaller pieces. I tried the Kaytee Forti-Diet which he hated. I also offer veggies and fruits. He doesn't like veggies much. I have gotten him to eat grape tomatoes cut in half and dandelion greens. Trust me I have offered him so much! He's very picky. He will also eat grapes (cut in half), apple, peach and blueberries. My neighbor has a black walnut tree. I gave him one and he didn't seem to know what to do with it. The squirrels in my area are crazy collecting them right now.

I bought a 3 level rat cage for him. He has a igloo to sleep in. I cut strips of a t-shirt and shredded some newspaper in the shredder. He has a cuddle bone and branches to chew on and a small cardboard to "hide" in. I've tried putting the cage on the deck when it's nice out. He is terrified. He is a huge baby and is afraid of any loud noises including the TV and radio.

I think he gets plenty of exercise. Not much in the morning since I have to go to work but my mom comes early afternoon to feed him and lets him play about 45 minutes. My daughter plays with him afternoon and I race home after work and play with him for about an hour. I'll tell you that he is my comic relief and can make any bad day go away. He also plays after dinnertime and before his bedtime. He can also be a good snuggler. :grin2

I understand I need to keep him through winter which makes me really happy as I enjoy caring for him. I am concerned that I am not feeding him properly and I have read about the MBD which scares me. I want to make sure I am doing everything to make him healthy and happy. I have invested a lot of money in him and do not mind spending more if it's in his best interest. Definitely would like suggestions on feeding and housing (how big are your cages).

Thank you and I look forward to everyone's comments and suggestions! 216284

:Welcome What an adorable boy you have!
Not surprising that at only 10-11 wks old, if I added correctly, your little guy is not ready for the big outdoors. I encourage you to put his cage outside, though, while the weather is still nice, because direct sunlight is essential for squirrels to metabolize calcium. And he'll get used to it eventually.

There is wonderful information in the nutrition section on a healthy diet for your baby. Looks like he has had just about everything provided for him by his Mommy-:grin2

As you can see, fruits and nuts should be very limited and just basically used as treats. I think that once you slow down with the fruit, he might like his blocks more. We generally recommend that they be given formula for as long as they like, and than transition to blocks, and only after that are other foods introduced. They really need to eat their blocks every day. And also, seeing that you're feeding HHBs, they get their D from that, so the outdoor cage is just an option IMO. I think this would be especially true for you due to your cold climate. If you are releasing him, it will have to be in the spring. Fall babies spend the winter with mom in even much warmer climates than yours.

Quick aside...

HHBs? This thread interests me since your little guy look to be about 5 weeks or so in front of mine, same situation with a rescue.

HHB's are what we call the blocks from Henrys. They're the best kind and most popular here:

HHB's = Henry's Healthy Blocks

A special product specifically for squirrels. They seem to like them better than regular rodent block.

Again, sorry for a temporary thread hijack, what would be recommended for these young squirrels headed for release, growth formula, wild bites or a combination?

Thank you for all the responses. Today I really feel like a mother squirrel. I took a bunch of black walnuts from the neighbor's yard. I'll dry them out for my guy later and I took some Hickory nuts from my mom's neighbor's yard. Lol I must be crazy.

I am concerned over this calcium thing. Are the Henry's blocks enough if he eats two a day? Wisconsin has long winners and a lot of gloomy days. Do I need to buy a special light for him?

Welcome~
I'm a newcomer too. I am caring for 3 adorable squirrels which is a bit challenging when no one is here to help me, but I manage. If I can tell you some of the foods my babes like, it may help you. Avacados (no pit pieces or peels); curly kale; acorns; plain cheerios. These are only treats. Keep on giving the formula.
Any advise you can pass to me would be appreciated as well - anyone!!!

I give my little ones all the HHB's they want (they even bury a few for snacks later, even though there is always more in their bowl). I also give them a Cuddle bone to chew on, so they get all the calcium they want. The key is making sure their bodies can convert the calcium to Vitamin D. This is done with Sunlight (Ultraviolet light to be exact). Having an outdoor cage should help with this (and he will need to get acclimatized through the winter anyway). If you want to supplement a light, make sure you get a Reptile light that emits UV. Don't just get the Sun Colored one, as that is just a florescent light that has a full spectrum of visible light (UV is invisible to the naked eye).

The folks here are so helpful and nice and have such wonderful advice and squirrel knowledge. I am a recent TSB transplant myself and will never leave! :crazy

a little secret :): actually, HHBs have the right amount of D, too. So, if sunlight is hard to get (it is here where we are), as long as they eat HHBs - they are set with both, Cal and D :thumbsup

Yes, two HHBs a day will provide more than enough nutrition for your babies.

TokerM, the growth formula is what you want.

See? I learn something every day on TSB. Thank you Astra! That is good to know and I will rest a little easier when the light goes out (mine seem to last about 6-8 months before they go out and have to be replaced). :grouphug
