I have an apprx. 7 wk old grey. My brothers little cat brought it home yesterday evening. I just realized it was dragging its leg but I don't think it was doing that last night or maybe I just didn't see it. It was so scared(still is). I can't see a puncture womb but he will not hold still enough to let me see. He bit me in the process so I put him back in the box. I try to hydrate him but he only drank a few drops. After he calmed down and let me hold him he drank a few drops again. Later I tried formula and he drank a few drops. Same scenario this morning. He's in the box making growling noises whenever he hears a sound or vibrations. I know I need to give him Baytril......but how. Never dealt with a hurt baby. Need advice. Scared to take him to vet because a law was just came into affect certain rehabbers wre not reissued permits to save certain animals and are instructed to put anything down/euthanize that comes to them. Not sure if squirrels are in that category. Advice please.:Love_Icon

Something happened yesterday also......when I arrived home with baby my daughter greeted me in the driveway and I opened the box to show her the baby. The baby squealed as loud as it could and all of the sudden Chloe ( my grey wild) came running out of the tree and ran towards me. I know she has a litter somewhere in one of the trees behind my house apprx. 5-6 wks. I wonder if she thought I had one of her babies. When she saw Molly (dog) she ran back up the tree. I was hoping she would adopt this little one but now that I see its hurt I don't think its possible. :Love_Icon

I take it you HAVE the Baytril? Info on dosing?

If you can get him so he is settled in pieces of fleece in the box, gather everything - squirrel and fleece around him to get him out, and wrap the whole bundle up in a snug burrito. Slip the syringe in the side of the mouth and squirt the meds!

Cover his face when you pick him up to dose him or to hydrate or feed him, and try to pick him up with his fleece so he doesn't really feel your hands. The scared babies do better if they can't see you.

And hum to him! Hold him in his little fleece bundle up next to your throat and hum softly - it helps soothe them.

I would try and wrap the baby up burrito style and even have part of the cloth covering it's head to try and feed it. This seems to calm the scared ones. Make sure it's hydrated first before doing anything else but it does need the Baytril as soon as possible even if you can't easily see any wounds.

Yes I have a little bit of Baytril and I can get some more. I have the dosing info in a book I made. I do cuddle him in fleece but he just wiggles and bury himself and growls and grunts. I know he hurts.

Get his weight and once he is hydrated he can have some infant ibuprophen along with his meds - it will help the hurting and may allow him to relax a bit.

Just gave baby hydration fluid and he drank more this time. I'm currently holding him in my bundled up sllep shirt so he will get use to my scent. we are in a calm state.

Have you given the antibiotics yet? If you aren't absolutely sure on how to dose, we can do it for you if you have a weight on him.

No.....he stopped drinking fluids......would not take anything...he's becoming lethargic and I found puncture wound on underside of thigh. He tries to cry so I know he is in pain. I think I need to have him euthanized. he's suffering. I've been holding him and crying....poor baby. I'm going to take him to my vet in a few minutes.

The antibiotics may work. Try if you can. Drop by drop into mouth. I have to go though.

If you start Baytril NOW he has a decent chance of surviving. But you must start ASAP! It is always a close call when a cat poisons a squirrel this way. I hope you can help him and it is not too late!

I would try baytril and pain meds first; I have read some amazing stories of survival once meds are started. It's worth a try. Pain meds would keep him comfortable and give him relief till the med kicks in....:Love_Icon

I am so sorry. I would still try the Baytril but if he is unresponsive you can hold him against your chest so he can hear your heart beat. It will sooth him. He should have a name too. :(

He's gone........maybe internal injuries played a part.....not sure but even though I only had him on day it hurts to lose one. after i have a good cry i will bury him next to Theodore. They can play over the rainbow bridge and wait for me there. I didn't even name him yet......

Gods Speed little squirrel. :( Thanks for trying to help him. You can still give him a name. He will hear it when you name him and have that to take with him to the Bridge.

I recently lost a co-worker who loved animals and had a lot of pets....birds, parrot, fish, lizards, cats, etc, and he would always ask about my squirrels. He was fascinated about everything I would tell him . He thought it was neat to know someone who took care of squirrels. He would be tickled if he knew I named a squirrel after him so Clayton it is. Clayton....take care of my Baby Clayton. Enjoy playing with him. They are lots of fun.:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_ Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_ Icon
