As far as I know it's not life threatening but I'm on my way to meet a girl with a cat caught chipmunk. She says there are no wounds but you know how that goes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :thankyou

i'd think - usual: hydrate and start ABs. Cat caught is always potentially fatal. There might be micro scratches one can't see

I just read this in "the book".
Do not treat with Amoxicillin or any other "cillin" drugs as it causes GI upset. Baytril is recommended for cat caught babies.

I am so excited!! I've never held one!! I can't wait to watch her grow up!! I saw a fish tank on freecycle, about to go ask for it!! They have tank topper cages on Amazon for a great price too!! We'll see how it goes, I've read here somewhere that they are hard to raise...

I love Chippies but they are a feisty lot. They mature faster than tree squirrels and mine would bite like the devil. Once their eyes opened they never bit me again. They are fast as lightening and great eaters. Enjoy them! Stacey

I know!!! Isn't it GREAT?!?!?!? Hayden discovered her wheel this morning too. I was feeding so I didn't have my phone, but it was super cute. That will be the next video to come. So far she's really really sweet. Just like the flyers. She likes to be on me and usually is. She curls up with the flyers in my bra :crazy :grin2 Too precious!

i don't think i would want a chipmunk for a pet unless it was to give it an old age home to die in like mine, but I sure wouldn't go out and buy one from a pet store. do they sell them in pet stores or something?

:thumbsup Cool video, you could see how intelligent Hayden is when in the wheel, she is looking at it very closely trying to figure it out. I would say she is going to need a lot of stimulation as chips are very active and smart creatures. You may have already posted this information but how often does she sleep and I assume since she is indoors she may never hibernate (although eastern chipmunks never go into full hibernation)?

She eats and then wants to play. She's plays and plays and then crashes until next feeding. There is only a couple of hours between feedings. Right now she does sleep through the night unless I wake her. She is out of the cage A LOT, but I have to cage her while I feed the others or she'll fight me and try to steal the syringe :eek She's very vocal!! She'll run around and run around, but when I want her I just call her name, kneel down and put my hand out. Rarely does she go elsewhere. She really loves being with me. I'm not very disappointed in that!! :grin2

I had no idea either. :thinking Everyone warned me about how mean she was going to be even as a baby. I didn't expect her to be like this at all. She gets down on the floor and runs around and then crawls into the bed when she wants. She slept with us last night too. I find it strange that I haven't found any poop in the bed. That was going to be a sure way not to sleep with mommy anymore. Guess they just don't want to poop where they're sleeping :dono

Hayden has little scratches on her butt and some little streaks of hair missing. Guess I'm going to put a little Revolution on her so see if that clears it up?!? :dono I can't see anything on her and no one else is having any issues. Really? Ours are just a teeny bit smaller than the red squirrels. When I see them scooting through the woods at a distance, the only way I can tell which is which is that the chippies stick their tails straight up in the air like a handle when they run!

Really? Ours are just a teeny bit smaller than the red squirrels. When I see them scooting through the woods at a distance, the only way I can tell which is which is that the chippies stick their tails straight up in the air like a handle when they run!
I know - the tail straight up! :grin2 Ours are like larger deer mice. Definitely smaller than reds. Very hard to find/see. They are Least Chipmunks. Do you have Eastern Chipmunks or another kind? Is that what Hayden is?

It started out as a scratch and several got infected. I started myself on ABs, and before it could heal, guess what...someone else's claw managed to open it right back up!! :eek :thumbsup

I would assume that she's an Eastern Chipmunk, yes. Um I got her on 9/23 and she opened her eyes the very next day. What I just found online is that they open their eyes at 4 weeks. So she would be 8-9 weeks old I suppose. She's about the same size as Ziva, my adult flyer. She's just more "heavy duty". She still runs into my shirt/bra and gives kisses. I love her to pieces! She can get in and out of her cage and does, but she also likes to curl up in the cat trees with the greys. :shakehead Remy just let everyone invade her cubby and sleep with her... and the baby flyers and Hayden still spend a lot of time together. Sometimes they crawl into one of the tiny cubbies together and snooze.

The info I just found says that they wean at 4 weeks also but she's still taking flyer formula. She's slowly cutting herself back though. She is totally NOT what I expected! She's not mean at all...I can do anything with her. She might try to get away but has never even pretended to bite me.

And Uncle Tomcics -- Certainly is an innocent little face, but she's a little DEVIL. Into EVERYTHING. There no telling where I'll find her next!

So lovely the way Hayden plays with you, very seldom get to see a chipmunk play with a human like that. I was wondering has she ever bit you hard? The reason I wonder is I have been bit quite a few times here by the chips attacking my hands but I never felt much at all.

She play bites like the squirrels do, but she's never broken the skin at all. She just likes to roll around and wrestle. She has NEVER caught an attitude with me or anything like that. Not even when it comes to food, she is very gentle when she takes it out of my hand. My house is rather dim, there aren't really enough lights for its size, so I have to use the light on the camera for video and pics so it's tough to catch them doing anything b/c they don't care for the light. She wrestles the stuffies like that ALL the time. It's so cute to see her attacking a stuffie the size of a cat and rolling it all around. :grin2 I've come to the conclusion that my babies must know how much I love them b/c they don't seem to develop the characteristic personalities of their species. :thinking I'm covered in claw marks from them constantly running all over me, which is fine...but no biters. Cayde has never been really sweet, he's been a grouchy cuss since he came in, and he nipped at me once and caught my cuticle on my thumb and it ripped. That's the closest to a bite that I've really come. They all play bite and I say, "OUCH" if they get to rough and they ease up. I've never even had to say ouch with Hayden though. She's really a good and sweet girl. She roams the bedroom, bathroom and hallway doing her own thing and then crawls in the bed with me when she's ready to go night, night. I put her in the cage when I leave or when I'm vacuuming, but otherwise she roams free. She's so beautiful and such a wonderful addition to the house!! I :Love_Icon her to pieces!!

:goodpost Unikorngrrl, your Hayden is a tiny doll. It's interesting the worse thing I have had here with the outdoor ones is the same thing you had 'caught my cuticle on my thumb and it ripped'. This happened a coupls times to me, once with Clara. I know you are very careful but always be aware that the chips will run right under your feet when you walk, they are so small, a slight step on them could be deadly, I accidentally injured one badly outside this way a couple years back and I never felt so bad, it was in so much pain but it recovered. Every day I try to tell myself to watch my feet outside. .

Aw, Uni, Hayden is just so cute and sweet. I agree that critters do know when you love them and tend to be more gentle with their loving "parent(s)". I miss Cheeky so bad when I think how gentle & loving he was with me. He always took food out of my hand gently and never one time bit me. It's amazing how much a human & a wild animal can love one another.

Wish I could see Hayden in real life and wish you could meet Adele & Pink. They run on the wheel together at night. I'll probably never get a video of it cuz they stop the moment I turn on the light.

:thankyou She still takes her formula like a champ. She takes 5cc per feeding now. She's very "sturdy". She feels heavy for her size, not thin at all. Very active little stinker!

Uncle Tomcics, they really all get along with her. The greys will chase her once in a while, but when it comes down to it, she crawls up in the cat trees with them and curls up and they all sleep together. She's also very close to the flyers. She LOVES them. I suppose b/c they spent so much time together in my bra :grin2 The flyers will fuss at her for a second and then give up as she lies on top of them or with them. See now what I never want to leave home!!! What weirdo would want to miss even a minute of all of this!!! :grin

I've been talking to Wskala too about Theodore. I am quite curious to see how Theo and Hayden are going to get along. I'm certain that Hayden has no clue that she's a chippe, but I think they might click! She's not so far away so she's supposed to visit too. Play date for the sweet peas. It'll be fun!

:goodpost Unikorngrrl & Hayden - I was thinking about the good natured way of Hayden earlier today, she seems to have a lovely disposition to mingle so well with her larger friends. It should be lots of fun to watch Theo and Hayden together, look forward to that future update (with pics :alright.gif). When I was thinking of Hayden's soft personality, I tried to compare her sweetness with the wild chips here. Initially, I think most of them (with the exception of ChipPip :)) were easy going and not likely to fight but there is a lot of competition and the only way to keep your place at the door is to be tough. It's really nice to read your posts and see a different side to chips too. Once again, be careful, when they trust you they run everywhere even under your feet.
P.S. - Hayden, not likely any chips would be as 'pretty' as you
