View Full Version : Rescued from Dogs

This morning when I got home from work, one of my dogs had a squirrel. He didn't appear to be hurting it, but our other dog saw he had something and snatched it from him. I managed to get the poor thing from them.

He has no visible wounds and has function of all of his limbs, but I think he may have brain damage as he has been having seizures off and on for several hours (no sound, just shaking of the whole body and eyes fluttering quickly). I have tried to re-hydrate with the solution given on this board (1 tsp salt, 3 tbs sugar, 1 qt warm water), but he does not want to take it (giving with syringe one drop at a time). He also seems to possibly have a cleft palate (see photo). I have successfully rehabbed a squirrel in the past, but not under these circumstances. I have an order of FV 20/50 on the way, but I need something in the mean time to feed it. I know there are varying opinions on dog/cat milk and I know I need to re-hydrate before feeding either one, but which one is best in this situation? His eyes are open and he is about 6 inches long from nose to butt.

There are no rehabbers in my area that I have been able to contact that are still active or that will bother with squirrels (Ware/Pierce County Georgia).

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Dogs are shakers, "brain damage" may (just) be like shaken baby syndrome or a possible concussion
that hopefully won't be permanent.
Would anyone else suggest administering Infant Ibuprofen to reduce any possible swelling?

I also had a baby who's "lip" appeared like that and thought the same thing but an
inspection of the mouth did not reveal a cleft pallet. As it aged it became more normal looking.

YES, HYDRATION THEN GOATS MILK FORMULA FOR NOW...HEATING PAD ON LOW UNDER HALF OF HIS CONTAINER/CAGE SO HE CAN GET OFF OF IT IF HE WANTS TO...DARK, QUIET AND PLENTY OF FLEECE OR T-SHIRT TYPE MATERIAL FOR HIM TO BURROW INTO...NO TOWELS OR LOOPED MATERIAL. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK THEM...SOMEONE WILL BE HERE TO ANSWER. HIS LIP/MOUTH LOOKS NORMAL TO ME.

Yes I think the infant ibuprophen is a good idea. I can dose for you if you can get a full shot of the body so I can guesstimate the weight.

Also when he is having seizures, it's good to rub a little bit of molasses, maple syrup or corn syrup on his gums, seizures drop the blood sugar levels, and this will bring them back up.:thumbsup

Also with seizures, don't keep them too warm, as it will make the swelling in the brain worse. Keep their body temperature at normal or slightly less than normal, rather than too high. Offer a lot of fleece if he gets too cold, he can burrow in that.

Thank you for the help. I will try to get a photo of his body asap. I will need to go get infant ibuprofen.

One eye keeps sealing closed. I managed to get it open one time by setting a small piece of warm rag on it for several seconds (not pressing on it too hard or rubbing), but now I can't get it to open again. He has finally taken 1CC of the sugar/salt solution. I also do not believe he has used the bathroom except to pee much earlier. I can express if I need to at certain times, but how often?

Just use a warm wet q tip or cotton ball to gently and quickly flick the genetalia until you get pee and poo. This is an older baby, so it may be going on it's own, but if you want to be sure, try stimulating before you express and squeeze on him, since he might have internal issues already.

You can put a little molasses or kayro syrup on the tip of the syringe to get him taking the electrolyte solution better. Plus, if this is low blood sugar seizures, it could bring up the blood sugar.

If he's continuing to seize, I'd try to find a squirrel friendly vet.

If you can get a weight on him in grams, I'm sure someone will send you the correct dosing for infant ibuprofen. Do you have a kitchen scale?
I can send you the dosing chart via PM.

Let us know how it's doing, poor little baby...

Very sorry if the photo is large. I'm in bed on my phone trying to warm him up. His eye is still sealed shut and he doesn't seem interested in going to the bathroom. This is the position he stays in.

A moment ago he seized again and fluid came out of his nose (clear). I last got him to drink 2 hours ago. I don't have any molasses but I have regular syrup. I'm making a trip to the store in the morning.

I'm going to contact an old co worker from a nearby state park and see if she has any experience with this as well.

Do you have a heating pad?/
If not, can you make a rice buddy,
take about a cup of uncooked rice or beans, pour it in an old tube sock, tie off the top, microwave about 30-45 seconds, squish it around so there's no hot spots, wrap an old tshirt around it and put it next to the baby, for him to cuddle up and be warm next to. should stay hot for a while. Sorry it's late and my typing is not so good.
Please let us know.
You might only be able to make him comfortable till he passes. I truly hope this is not the case.
Use regular syrup if you don't have anything else.
Poor baby.

If you can't stimulate successfully, please feel for an enlarged, hard bladder in his abdomen, If it;s full and he's not going, here's a video of how to express it:

Poor baby.

I've been waking up about every 1-2 hours to check on him. He now has a bloody nose and won't take any kind of fluid and seems to be having a hard time breathing. He struggles if I move him from my hand so I have him curled up in my palm hoping for the best. Thank you for answering my late night questions. It means a lot. I'll keep you updated.

Just got up, checking here.
Was you able to get the infant ibuprofen?

Not yet. I also do not have a kitchen scale but will ask all of the in laws (who are currently at church). I live 40 minutes away from the closest location that might have infant ibuprofen but will be going soon. How do I get him to take it if he will not swallow?

His breathing has returned to somewhat normal, but still cannot get him to drink. He seized earlier and peed a small amount. No new blood from the nose. Put a small amount of syrup on his lips also. He has licked most of it off.

Got the infant ibuprofen and he seems much better. Just woke him up and he was thirsty, but was only interested in about 2 ccs of fluids. Got the eye open again and it has stayed open for 4 hours. Very hopeful!

:thankyoufor so patiently helping this little one...:grouphug
Drop by drop from a 1cc syringe for fluids. Even if you have to put it into the side of his mouth, just a drop at a time it will help. Dehydration is a vicious cycle. When they are dehydrated they want no food or water and that dehydrates them further. Just patiently give a bit at a time. The syrup/molasses really helps after a seizure as they cause the blood sugar to plummet.
Many prayers for a great recovery...:Love_Icon

You can give the ib every 4-6 as needed.
You can't help what happened but you can help
eliminate the pain associated from what happened... :grouphug
