View Full Version : Baby Squirrel needs mom.

I found a baby squirrel this morning that fell out of a tree next to my apartment. After some quick google searching, I made it a small nest-like thing out of some grass, leaves from the tree it fell out of, and some Kleenex and put it in a shoe box next to the tree hoping that the mom would come back to get it. So far she hasn't. :(
I've been giving it a small amount of a warm sugar/salt water mix that I found on squirrel-rehab.org to keep it hydrated.
I would keep it, but I'm completely clueless, and my apartment has a no pets policy.

Hey TSB - sent this sweetheart in your direction after she had commented on a picture of my little on Instagram. Wasn't sure what else to do, but figured someone on here would be able to help!

Those are the basics. I have to go. Others will be on.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HIM? EYES OPEN OR CLOSED? FULLY FURRED OR NOT? DOES HE APPEAR INJURED? CAN YOU TEXT A PIC...SOMEONE WILL POST A #

Eyes are closed; lightly furred. From everything I'm reading, I think he's roughly 3 weeks old. It doesn't look like he has any teeth coming in and his mouth is usually open: I can see his tongue. I only have one picture, but I will try to post it.

HOW ARE YOU FEEDING THE HYDRATION FLUID? DO YOU HAVE A 1CC SYRINGE? PLEASE LOOK AT THIS THREAD TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE HOLDING HIM CORRECTLY DURING FEEDING. http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?36776-PROPER-FEEDING-TECHNIQUE!! ITS REALLY EASY TO ASPIRATE THESE LITTLE ONES AND THEN WE HAVE A WHOLE OTHER PROBLEM
GOT THE PIC...HAS HE BEEN ACTIVE AT ALL? HOW MUCH OF THE MIXTURE HAVE YOU GIVEN HIM? HOW OFTEN? SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS...THE MORE INFO THE BETTER.

I've been holding him correctly from what I've seen. I do not have a syringe, as I just recently moved out of my home. I've been using a 1/2 tsp measuring spoon, putting it up to his mouth, and pouring it as drop-by-drop as possible, waiting around a minute or two in-between each to make sure that I don't give him more than he can take.
the_mtimmons
09-11-2013, 05:55 PM
That's okay!
He's been rolling around a lot and trying to grab on to things. He's moved less since I put him in the box, but he still rotates to get under the Kleenexes.
I gave him the mix around 3 times from 11-1:30, again around 2:30, and I'll give it to him again around 5:15 (I'm at work right now).
I did the "skin pinch" between his shoulder blades, and it seemed like he was moderately hydrated when I found him.
IF MOM HASN'T COME FOR HIM BY NOW, IT'S NOT LIKELY SHE WILL. CAN YOU TAKE HIM INSIDE AND PUT HIM IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER WITH SOME OLD COTTON TEE SHIRTS OR PIECES OF FLEECE...HEATING PAD SET ON LOW UNDER HALF OF THE CONTAINER?
the_mtimmons
09-11-2013, 05:59 PM
Yeah, I can here in a few minutes!
I don't have a heating pad, but I have several water bottles. Will a warm water bottle work?

WHERE IS HE NOW??? GOOD JOB ON THE PINCH TEST!!! IF HE'S OUTSIDE HE NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT IN AND KEPT WARM (EVEN IF ITS WARM OUTSIDE.) ARE YOU USING A SYRINGE FOR FEEDING?
A WATER BOTTLE WILL WORK, BUT HAVE TO CHECK IT OFTEN...WRAP IN IN FLEECE OR COTTON...HOLD IT TO YOUR FACE...IF ITS TOO HOT FOR YOU ITS TOO HOT FOR HIM. NO TOWELS...HIS CLAWS WILL GET CAUGHT IN THE LOOPS...BROKEN TOES/FINGERS. YOU CAN MAKE A RICE BUDDY WITH SOCK FILLED WITH UNCOOKED RICE OR BEANS...TIE IT OFF, MICRO 30 SEC AT A TIME, SQUISH AROUND TO MAKE SURE NO HOT SPOTS...PLACE NEXT TO HIM

TRY TO GET A 1CC SYRINGE (NO NEEDLE) FROM CVS OR WALGREENS...TELL THE PHARMACIST THAT YOU FOUND A BABY KITTEN AND NEED SOMETHING TO FEED IT. IF THEY CHARGE YOU ANYTHING IT WON'T BE MORE THAN $1...WILL MAKE THIS MUCH EASIER.

The sock with dried rice or beans is a much better option. A water bottle is good while warm, but as it cools it begins to leach the warmth from around itself so in the end it chills the baby. The rice holds its heat and will stay long for a longer length of time.

Just got home. There was blood on some of the tissues, but no blood on him, so I'm not sure where it came from. The same tissue had a hole in it, but he has no teeth and seems kind of uncoordinated with claws. About to give him mix again while waiting on the heater in my dining room to make it so I can at least get him inside.
HAVE YOU SEEN ANY BLOOD OR NOTICED ANYTHING THAT MAKES YOU THINK HE'S INJURED OR NEEDS MEDICAL ATTN? IS HIS COORDINATION APPROPRIATE...ALL EXTREMITIES SEEM FUNCTIONAL?
IF HE'S OK...THIS IS ABOUT HELPING HIM SURVIVE THE SHOCK OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED. IF HE NEEDS MED ATTENTION WE'LL HAVE TO TRY TO SEE THAT HE GETS IT.
DO YOU WANT US TO TRY TO FIND SOMEONE TO TAKE HIM? OR FIND SOMEONE THAT WILL EVALUATE HIS CONDITION? HE'S A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE SQUIRREL!!!

He didn't seem to have any injuries previously. When I first found him, I touched all of his limbs to make sure that he'd respond, which he did. No scratches or anything either.
I would like to find someone to take him, but after looking everything over, I'm willing to take care of him until he can be released.

Coming from someone who is doing this for the first time, it is a LOT of dedication. My little is currently sleeping on my lap at work.. luckily I am able to take her with me. It really is a 24 hour job raising one of these guys. Just make sure to look through all the of the time, effort and expenses before you make any decisions. Especially since you will probably have to keep her through the winter months at LEAST before she can be released. You're a doll just for doing what you've already done! A lot of people would have just turned away. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

If you are near Tillman County, here is a link with some information about two rehabbers there.

Blood came from nose. :( happened after I tried to hydrate him. I laid him on my leg and set his head so that it would drain out.
Found a rehab in OKC, but the lady said to bring him in tomorrow because they had already finished the daily pickup from that location.
I have him sitting in front of my heater while I figure out how to do the sock. What should I do for overnight?
the_mtimmons
09-11-2013, 06:51 PM
No clicking noises, but he did move his tongue and mouth around a few minutes ago. May be just normal movement, but I don't know.
RICE BUDDY IS BEST...FILL THE SOCK WITH UNCOOKED RICE THEN TIE IT OFF WITH STRING...MICROWAVE 30-45 SEC AT A TIME UNTIL WARM...SQUISH AROUND TO MIX UP HOT SPOTS IF ANY...LAY IT NEXT TO HIM. CHECK EVERY SO OFTEN TO SEE HOW LONG IT WILL HOLD ITS HEAT...IF COLD MICRO AGAIN. DON'T PUT HIM TOO CLOSE TO A HEATER...GIVE HIM PLENTY OF FLEECE OR TEE SHIRT MATERIAL TO BURROW INTO NEXT TO THE RICE BUDDY.
THERE IS NO NICE WAY TO SAY THIS, BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE REHABBER WILL NOT JUST EUTHANIZE THIS BABY OR USE HIM FOR RAPTOR FOOD AFTER YOU DROP HIM OFF. SOME DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE TROUBLE OR TIME THAT THESE BABIES REQUIRE. TELL THEM THAT YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO VISIT. IF YOU ARE UNEASY, DON'T TAKE HIM. TRY TO GET THE SYRINGE FROM THE DRUG STORE TONITE. KEEP POSTING ON HERE. THE MORE INFO, THE BETTER FOR HIM.
DO YOU HAVE A KITCHEN SCALE?

I moved him onto my chest because the heater was blowing over him, and now he's moving a lot more. haha. He keeps making little squeaks.
I'm going to try to get a syringe tonight. I only have regular (cow's) milk here. Do you suggest just hydrating him throughout the night? I saw that you're supposed to use special milk substances, which I don't have any of.

Katy told me earlier that I'm supposed to stimulate his genitals to make him "go", but he hasn't so far when I've tried. Do you have any suggestions for that as well?
CritterMom

Just continue the hydration. It may take a while before he pees if he is dehydrated at all, so don't be alarmed, but continue to do it before and after you give him the rehydration fluid.
If you have a place that sells goats milk around, an excellent temp formula can be made with that and some vanilla yogurt, but he should be okay with just hydration if you can get him to the rehabber first thing tomorrow.

Think like a squirrel. Fairly rapid and gentle "licks" near the genitals using a warm, moist piece of cloth or q-tip.
It takes a little to get it figured out.
MOST WAL-MARTS SELL GOATS MILK...IN THE DAIRY SECTION IN A CARTON OR CANNED NEXT TO THE EVAPORATED MILK. THE CANNED USUALLY NEEDS TO MIXED WITH WATER BEFORE MAKING THE FORMULA...SEE THE DIRECTIONS. LOOK FOR FULL FAT (NOT REDUCED FAT OR FAT FREE) YOGURT. THERE IS A BRAND CALLED YOBABY SOLD HERE...THERE ARE PROBABLY OTHERS (DANNON ALL NATURAL IS ANOTHER.) VANILLA OR BANANA. RECIPE IS 1 CUP GOATS MILK, 1/3 CUP YOGURT. TO HEAT, PUT 3-5 CC IN A SANDWICH BAG AND PLACE IN BOWL OF HOT TAP WATER FOR A FEW MIN. CHECK TEMP ON YOUR WRIST OR HAND...SHOULD FEEL WARM, NOT HOT. REMEMBER THE FEEDING TECHNIQUE :thumbsup

Just for back from the store with syringe, goats milk and yogurt. They didn't have regular vanilla, so I bought French. I hope there's not a difference. Will try to help him pee before and after.

OK...GOOD. LET'S MAKE SURE THAT HE'S HYDRATED AND WARMED BEFORE YOU TRY THE FORMULA. SO MAYBE THE HOMEMADE HYDRATION MIXTURE NOW (IT NEEDS TO BE WARMED ALSO) AND THEN THE GOATS MILK FORMULA LATER TONITE. KEEP HIM WARM WHILE FEEDING, WRAPPED BURRITO STYLE AND UPRIGHT...GO SLOW WITH THE SYRINGE. YOU'RE DOING GREAT!!!

You are just wonderful!! Warms my heart (and I know that on any budget going out and finding those things isn't cheap or easy... I'm pretty sure the pharmacist in my town thought I needed a syringe to do drugs the first time I asked! haha) Just remember like they said, both baby and formula must be WARM! Make sure formula isn't too hot, and don't microwave it directly! I usually heat up a cup of water in the microwave, fill the syringe, and let it sit in the cup until it is warm (test on your wrist). Microwaving the formula can mess with the protein complex and make the formula not as effective. Again, you are a beautiful soul for caring for him so well, even if it is just for a night! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I think I got him to pee, but it was kind of hard to tell. I've noticed that he'll sit curled up for about 20 minutes and then starts frantically waving his paws around until I scoop him up in a tissue. I'm not sure if that's a warmth issue or what. He's been having spontaneous nosebleeds, but their worse after I use the water mixture, even with the syringe. I just tilt his head down and let it drain, even though he keeps trying to flip upside down. I've got him next to the rice buddy wrapped up in a lot of tissues. I'll probably try to make him pee again and feed him in about half an hour.
Thanks for being encouraging. :)
THE TISSUES ARE GOOD...OLDER SQUIRRELS WILL USE THEM BY THE DOZENS...BUT YOUR LITTLE GUY NEEDS SOME PIECES OF SOFT COTTON OR FLEECE MATERIAL JUST ALL LUMPED TOGETHER WITH THE TISSUES THAT HE CAN GET UNDER...SORT OF A NEST. HE WILL NOT SUFFOCATE...KEEP THE RICE BUDDY IN THERE WITH HIM. THIS WILL KEEP HIM WARM AND ABLE TO EAT AND DIGEST THE FORMULA. COLD BABIES WILL NOT EAT AND CAN'T PROCESS THEIR FOOD. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GETTING HIM TO TAKE THE FORMULA, RUB A TINY BIT OF MOLASSES OR SYRUP ON HIS GUMS OR TRY A LITTLE ON THE END OF THE SYRINGE. IT WILL STIMULATE HIS APPETITE.
I AM TRYING TO FIND A MEMBER NEAR YOU WHO CAN TAKE HIM...KATE SAID YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO DRIVE UP TO 3-4HRS IF NEED BE. IS THAT CORRECT? JUST WORRIED ABOUT A REHABBER WE DON'T KNOW.

It took him a while to take to the formula, but towards the end he started suckling a lot. I think I'm going to try again here in a couple of hours just in case.
I put him in a bigger box with two hot water bottles and the rice buddy. I'm going to heat them all back up again a little bit before I try feeding him again.
I actually can't drive that far because of financial and transportation issues (my car seems to be the most unreliable when I need it the most).
The place that I'm taking him to seems to be where all of the wild animals were taken after the big tornadoes in Moore back in May. I'm not sure if that means that they're highly credible, or if they just had a big enough facility. Either way, I can't really afford to go outside of the OKC area. However, if you manage to find someone in this area then please let me know so that I can hook Baby Squirrel up. :)

And I added some cotton pads to his tissues and put him on top of a thinner towel so that he doesn't get his paws stuck. :)
STILL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE HIM...JUST SO WE'RE ON THE SAME PAGE, HE NEEDS TO BE INSIDE/UNDER A PILE OF SOFT TEE SHIRT OR FLEECE MATERIAL PIECES SO HIS BODY HEAT DOESN'T ESCAPE AS HE SLEEPS. YOU HAVE MY # IF YOU NEED IT. CAN YOU POST OR TEXT ME THE NAME AND PHONE # OF THE FACILITY THAT YOU TALKED TO. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR HELPING HIM. I'LL BE IN TOUCH.

Yep! I've nestled him into the towel and covered him with the tissues. I'm going to cover him with a couple of wash cloths after they come out of the dryer. :)
I pulled the facility from the link from Nancy. All of their info is here: http://www.wildliferehabber.org/rl_disp_det.php
However, they said that they had a "drop off facility" where they pick up the animals from daily over in Oklahoma City, which is where I'll be taking him. The woman that I talked to on the phone suggested that I take him over there tomorrow so that he can be taken in same-day instead of having to stay at the "drop-off" place.

OK...I THINK WE (OR MAYBE IT WAS JUST ME) CAN EXHALE!!!
I TALKED TO THE OKLAHOMA WILDLIFE RESCUE AND EDUCATION CENTER WHERE HE IS GOING (TO THEIR DROP OFF POINT IN OKC) AND THEY WERE EXTREMELY NICE. BRIEFLY...NO EUTHANASIA POLICY, NO RAPTOR FOOD, THEY WILL TREAT IF INJURED, VET ON SITE, MANY SQS, FOX VALLEY IS THEIR FORMULA (FUNNY STORY ABOUT THAT-LATER), BUT I FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. THEY RAISE AND RELEASE. TURNED THE PERSON ON TO TSB...SHE WILL PROBABLY BECOME A MEMBER.
THE LITTLE ONE SHOULD BE AT THE DROP OFF FACILITY (ANIMAL SHELTER) BY NOW. HE'LL BE ONE OF MANY, BUT FOR A BIG FACILITY PROBABLY COULDN'T ASK FOR MORE.

The drop off seemed pretty enthused to get a squirrel. It looked like thy predominately had cats and dogs, but on the sign in sheet, I saw that someone had brought in a squirrel yesterday (also from Edmond). Glad to know that they're a good place!
I got in my car when I was leaving and cried a lot. Haha I think I was just sad that I wanted to be the one to take care of him, but there's realistically no way that I could. Maybe someday though!
