Hi. Have a 4.5 week old doing well (thanks, TSB).
Got a call tonight about another baby needing help.
Will work well since my guy's brother didn't make it :(
Just got home with him and see he has white dandruff looking flakes all over.
Upon closer observation, I noticed that the flakes are actually moving. They look like teeny tiny worms. Please advise. Thanks!

Dawn bath will help many bugs. you can make a water with a bit of Dawn bath and dip a cloth into it and wipe down baby or give a bath. Either way, be sure to not let baby get chilled. Dry and warm immediately.

Any idea what these worms are? Any other treatment options? I did make a solution of dawn and water and wiped him down. Got some but not all of them. Not sure how hard I should rub? And should I continue doing this treatment? Or is there something else I should try to eliminate all of them? Thanks

Do you have a flea comb or a fine toothed comb? A TINY drop of Revolution may work, but he is pretty little. Hopefully someone else will comment soon.

those are maggots hatching and you must get them off. Warm water and Dawn dish soap, wipe baby everywhere! If you see any coming out of his nose, ears or mouth you will need Capstar, a flea medicine that kills maggots also. We can help you dose it, but wipe the baby down now, asap!

Capstar! Not revolution. Thank you IR! And yes..maggots are what they are. Keep wiping and picking them off. Check your other thread too.

Please check inside the ears really good. Saline
flush them if maggots are present.
A tooth brush works good to help remove eggs
too.

Island Rehabber hit the nail right on the head with that one! My babies had those too when I found them but they hadn't hatched yet, they ended up falling right off when I brought them inside and started warming and hydrating them. After the warming, I bathed them just to be sure, and they haven't had any since! I was terrified those babies were getting ready to die because maggots only eat dying and dead flesh (unless of course the maggot population is super duper high), but we showed them a thing or two! <3 Good luck hun!

Don't forget the Capstar - more than Dawn is needed. They can get INSIDE the squirrel and Capstar will get rid of those. It is very safe. It is NOT a prescription med - sometimes Petco has it; you should be able to buy one from a vet... Get the size in milligrams and we will help you dose.

Caution about giving a bath in dawn: it often just causes the maggots to go hide in the wound or crevice they came from and they don't seem to be killed, even with soaking for 5 minutes. Some of them look pretty loose so I'd try with a flea comb first.
Also, since you probably don't want flies in your house, I'd recommend taking him outside to get the maggots off because they will survive in the garbage, drain, pretty much wherever they go. If they are already down the drain, you can pour some bleach down the drain and cover the drain for an hour and that'll kill them.
