View Full Version : What are these strange sores on my wild squirrels?
We live in Tampa, FL and have feeders in our backyard for squirrels and birds. I have started noticing strange looking wounds on two or three squirrels and I can not find anything that looks like it anywhere. I found this forum and hope that someone here can tell me what this is, and if there is anything I can or should do about it. The squirrels seem fine, they act like the other squirrels, so these - whatever they are - do not seem to be hurting them. Thank you so much for your help.

Looks like bot flies. It could be pox, but it looks more like bots. They will resolve themselves unless they're blocking eating, breathing, etc. Here is a link to threads about them. They're disgusting.

Yes bot fly larvae in the skin. All my releases are showing up with them now too. They should run their course and fall out, and hopefully not be in a dangerous place for the squirrel.

Yes, those are 100% botflies and by the looks of them they are about ready to come out....... :yuck :yuck
I have 2 baby squirrels in my care atm --and one of them has a few botflies on him.
You can read about his case and see pics at this link:
