Hi there, I have an approx 6-7 week old back/brown squirrel that I am raising and I have raised infant squirrels since I was in high school (I am now 39) and have never had to deal with any injuries but this little girl got her nail stuck between the rungs of the cage I have her in. It was where the front and side of cage meets and this cage has housed many babies and this has never happened. Due to her trying to free herself before I noticed her stuck she has injured one finger on her paw and its swollen and red and she is favoring it. She is still eating fine but I am worried about her and not sure what to do. Where I am from there are no wildlife rehabbers and I have not found a vet yet that deals with wild animals so turned to the internet for help and found this site.

Any advice?

Thanks

Jen

:WelcomeJen... Do you have infant Ibuprofen around or can you get some? She will likely be fine, but if you give us her weight, we can help you to dose it for you.

Sorry to hear this happened. I know others will be along shortly with a lot more advice on pain meds that she could have. You might want to just start by washing it with antibacterial soap and checking to see if there is any broken skin.

As SM said infant Ibuprofen for pain and it will help with swelling.
Keep an eye on it and you might want to restrict her climbing around
at least until the swelling goes down. Not much more a vet would do
for it anyway.
And yeah! :Welcome to TSB!

:eek 47 grams on a 7 week old,
what species of squirrel is this??
That would amount to skin and bones where I am.

i think i used the scale wrong i think she is 150g but i don't have infant Advil only children's which is 100mg/5mls... I should wait until I get some infant?

I put her in a small box and I thought I had to subtract the weight of the box after I weight her but the scale must have already subtracted it...

Infant Ibuprofen (drops) is 50mg/1.25ml
@ 150 grams it would dose at 0.037cc
You would really need a syringe to give a proper
dose. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think a dropper
is going to read that.

Does she appear to be in any real pain and how is the swelling now?

better to have a sore toe than to be overdosed with drugs. be careful. what kind of scale do you have? most have a tare button you put the box on it, then hit the tare button which zeros it out. then put on squee and see what it weighs. be careful. don't guess. you can kill a squirrel with overdosing.

0.3 cc is less than ONE CC !!! if you do not have a 1 cc syringe marked in 1/10ths, don't even try this medicine.

they have infant ibuprofen at the drugstore. we are talking a very tiny AMOUNT.
