View Full Version : disconcerting lump on new baby Max

When I get a new squirrel, I just give a cursery look over and let them settle in for about a day before the big inspection. Max gave me no reason to do more than that, except he has yet to poop, other than some dried bits he passed (with stimulation) after his first meal. That's happened with all my others, so I'm not worried, just watching it.

I''ve now had Max about 24 hours, and until his last feeding he fell asleep after each meal, and didn't wake up until I woke him to eat 4 hours later. This time he was up and rooting around, and stayed up kind of inspecting his surroundings afterwards, so I took the opportunity to inspect him too. I gave him my rehab massage, which he enjoyed, until I ran across a lump on his left side. (right side? - now I'm confused and I kow it matters! Left, I think) It is closer to his back than his front, and quite prominent when his leg is down, but when he sits so his knee moves up and covers his side, it hides behind his knee. There is no matching lump on the otehr side. It's a firm lump, round like a marble ( not that hard) and about the size of the tip of my forefinger. When I palpated it, he didn't jerk away, but did roll over on his other side.

Does this sound like it could be due to the fact that he has not passed any stool? If so, I'll give him a warm half bath ( It's been effective before, and the baby loved it). I will do so anyway in the morning. Otherwise, what do you think it might be?

My first thought was it might be an absess, but I got my magnifier out and looked him over very well, looking for the possibility of an injury, and found none - no wounds of any kind, no bruising and no swollen lymph nodes that would indicate an infection.

My daughter reminded me that our vet said he'd see squirrels if we ever had a problem. That's one option, but my car is in the shop with an expensive repair, and we just paid for college X 2, so it's rotten timing. Our former vet was wildlife certified and great to work with he never charged. He had me do the rehabbing, but gave us food and advice and medical care - said that was how it worked ( yeah in a perfect world!). but he retired, and while the practice continues to rehab, it's no longer a staff I'm comfortable with. I'd be expected to turn him over to them - which would be great, if I knew they'd do right by him. Once they roughed up my elderly and very sensitive cat, I've never trusted them.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. :thankyou

Can we see a pic please? --it could be any thing from an abscess to a warble from a bot fly, therefore, a pic would really help.

There's nothing to photograph - definately not an absess or bot fly. No wound of any sort, and no discoloring. I looked carefully with a high powered magnafying glass.

I checked at last feeding and confirmed it is the left side.

He was very lively after eating, for the first time and just kept nosing around, Didn't seem to be in pain - no biting himself or me, and no licking himself or making sounds.

If you could take a pic showing his underside and another with him standing or sitting up, pointing an arrow whre the bump is... that could be helpful. I do think that trying to stimulate him again with the bath is a good idea. Can't hurt to try.

:dono but I once had a baby who had a small hernia in his groin and the problem resolved itself within a few days.

Almost sounds like a fatty tumor type of thing. I know other critters can get them. I would keep a close eye on it, it still may be an abcess. Just for poops and giggles, maybe try putting warm compresses on it?

I'll give that a try, if I can catch him between his two modes - sacked and ZOOM, LOL. ZOOM is new this morning. Clearly he's feeling better.

It is definately closer to his back, nowhere near the groin/hernia area (I'm unfortunately familiar with that in kittens). More like where the spleen would be, I think - higher than I'd expect a kidney. Also not where I'd expect stool.

Thanks! :Love_Icon

That is exactly what it feels like, but much larger than I'd expect, and more in area you'd expect an organ :(. It's close to gumball sized. Maybe 3/4 of a marble or gumball.

Warm compresses is exactly what I did last night and this morning. :thumbsup No change this morning - and no poops (yet) now that you mention it, but a quite wet blanket :grin2 I made him go 5 hours (instead of 4) between meals and he was a thin little thing this morning, so I wondered if he could be pooping and eating it? I keep him in a dog carrier with the gate side where I can see him, and never see any movement until after I take his blanket bundle out and open it.

I'm going to give him a nice warm soak in a bowl of water as soon as one of my kids wakes up. Last little squirrlie I did it with LOVED it, but you never know, so I don't want to risk an accident. I have a small mixing bowl with a lip on it, that they can get a good hold onto and which fits them perfectly up to the waist.

I just took a photo of the area, and then remembered I'm having photo issues with my laptop, so let me try to describe the location better. See the three squirrels at the top of this pave, where it says "the Squirrel BOard.? The guy on the far right , if he were to move his head down just a little and lick himself right where his back curves out the most, that would be the exact spot. So, about 1/4 of an inch into the gray is where it begins, and to about 1 inch into the gray. His tail is just fluffing, so he's still a little guy.

Does that help?

:thankyou
