Hello -I need some advice - Ihave raised squirrels in the past but they were gray when I found them. Yesterday I found 3 pink babies 2 female and a pinky male, I put them in a box with his original bedding right next to the nest, the momma took the 2 females and left the boy for dead, she did not come back. I waited til today. He was dehydrated so I went to the pet store and got the milk I used before and some pedialyt. He is not drinking I put a couple of drops of each at seperate time but he really isnt taking it in. He is warm and moves around but he did have 2 times as much energy yesterday. I may have fed him cold - Ihe was outside and it was about 80 degrees after trying to feed him I did notice he was cold to the touch
any advise would be helpful---213591picture of Baby rabbit found in the yard

Are you talking about the animal in the pic? --is so thats a baby bunny, not a squirrel.
and..... all baby wild life needs to be warm & hydrated before given any food.
Homemade Pedialyte:
1c warm water
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
....... keeps for 3 days in Frig

BABY SQUIRREL CARE:
First thing needed is to warm the squirrel.
Now check for any injuries and/ or wounds.
Hydrate the squirrel right away (use a 1cc syringe) and go slow.
Give homemade pedialyte every hour for eight hours (max 24 hours).
Once hydrated make Goats Milk formula, feed 5-7% of their body weight every 4 hours.
Make sure you stimulate after each feeding to help the squirrel go potty if under 5 weeks.
IMPORTANT: Babies must be kept WARM --NEVER feed a cold baby.
_______
+ Emergency Care for Baby Squirrels +
1. Warm the squirrel (never feed a cold squirrel)
2. Place in plastic container or box w/ pieces of fleece
3. Rehydrate the squirrel (feed pedialyte first 24 hours)
Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
4. Slowly feed with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN
5. Keep warm at all time - fill bottle with hot water (cover bottle with sock)
__________
Goats Milk Recipe:
1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)
(lasts 72 hours in frig)
__________
WARMTH:
1. Heating Pad, on low with a fleece blanket on top --place the squirrel in the blanket.
2. Rice Buddy --put rice in sock (tie off) microwave for 30 sec - place next to the squirrel.
3. Fill empty water bottles with hot water and slide into a single sock then place next to squirrel.
Once the squirrel is settled in order Fox Valley formula:
http://www.henryspets.com/
http://www.foxvalleynutrition.com/main/home.asp (32/40 birth to 4 wks – 20/50 4 wks & older)
_______
Hydration / Pinch Test
Once the squirrel is all warmed up you can feed him a little pedialyte every five minute by placing a syringe tip to the corner of his mouth. You will probably have to do this for a good hour or two until he is feeling well enough to take a few cc's at one time.......... when this happens you can feed him the pedialyte every 30 minutes to an hour.
The most important thing to do right now is to get him fully hydrated..... you can perform a pinch test between the shoulder blade to see how well he is --if the skin is pinched and goes down fast then the pedialyte is working, if the skin stays up or goes down slowly more liquid hydration is needed (hydrate up to 24 hours w/ pedialyte).

I my have fed him cold - i couldnt tell it was warm outside but after feeding him he did feel cool to the touchThey will not eat if cold or dehydrated...... please make sure the pinkies are on a heating pad with a blanket placed between them and the HP and a blanket placed over them (fleece would be best). Only feed them some of the homemade pedialyte when they are fully warm to touch and keep them warm while feeding them. Once they have been hydrated for several hours you can start feeding them at 5-7% of their body weight every 2-3 hours depending on how much they weigh.
Do you have any Fox Valley still on hand or will you be using the Goats Milk recipe until you order some FV?

With a pinky I would start him on the goat milk formula. Do not start out full strength formula. He will need to be transitioned to formula over a day or more depending on whether he is digesting the formula. Please get him warm before feeding. Then re-hydrate him before feeding. Pinkies need to start out with no cream in the formula for at least a few days. These little pink ones are tricky to raise if you have not done it before. He will need to be fed every 2-2 1/2 hours during the night also.
:thankyou for helping this little baby.

A tip I will add for working with pinkies is to try not to pick them up with your hands since they chill easy. Even when stimulating them keep as much of their body wrapped up as you can. I find that cutting flannel into 4 inch squares works well and then just toss them into a lingerie bag to wash.

How is your little pinky doing this morning? They are worth all the work that it takes to keep them going. If you need any help let me know. I am in the area.

Little Pinky died this morning - he was too far gone and never really drank any pedialyt or milk - he was without the mom for at least 2 days and was less than a week old. We have had success in the past with severly dehydrated squirrels but they all had some strength and were older.
