I just went outside to put out some mid day treat for the squirrels when I noticed one of my new releases from three days ago
was hanging around its release cage, so I went over to give it a few squirrel blocks and thats when I noticed it had a big bloody
fresh gash on its left side.
The squirrels seems to be ok others wise, it is able to climb and jump with out any problems..... and it ate the squirrel block I offered
to it. But I am concerned as to how the squirrel will or will not heal on its own. Any suggestions on how to go about treating this squirrel?
I have raised my squirrels right and while they will come in my direction to obtain food, they do not want me to hold or touch them.
Maybe I can entice the squirrel back in the release cage tonight....... fingers crossed.

Best of luck. Maybe try putting it's most favorite treat in the cage as an enticement.

Sorry to hear this. I would definitely try to recapture and observe for a few days.
I wonder if you can get a good look at the wound while he is in captivity. If not, at
least you should be able to keep an eye on it to see if it is getting infected.
Are you able to get near him to hand feed?
Good luck with this.

Good luck with this.I have been and can get with in a foot of the squirrel, so I can keep an eye on the wound.
What would be the best course of treatment for a wild if the wound does become infected?

Well definitely abs. But you would have to have her contained X amount of days to give her the full dosages, unless
she comes daily and you could dose her that way. If doing so with Baytril, that would be once a day, which would be great
for a wild squirrel.
Ideally, flushing, and then topical antibiotic ointment. Just generally keeping it clean.
Boy not sure how you would do this if she is wild and not easily handled.
Hope that others will chime in.
I've seen wilds treated on the board, but usually when they are severely wounded and sort of "out of it",
which doesn't seem the case with your little one.

Antibiotics hidden in peanut butter and put the peanut butter in an empty walnut shell..... less peanut butter the better, so he eats it all.
put his blocks in the cage and sit there beside it till he goes inside, then shut the door

Freedom under its belt the squirrel sure isnt looking to go back into captivity any time soon.

(or she, when I get a closer look).

The non-wounded squirrel returned tonight to eat some food, but did not stay.
Its 10 PM and so far no sight of my wounded baby...... :(
I will check first thing in the morning, and through out the day --fingers crossed.

Ok - He finally returned today at 10 am and it is the male, Alexander. The wound looks good and is still clean and pink.
I could not get him into the cage, he was not having any of that, but at least I got a good look at the wound.
Alexander stayed around for a while and ate some squirrel block & vegetables..... hopefully that will keep his strength up while healing.
Momma squirrel was also out there eating when he arrived so she scattered away and buried her block for a later time (to cute). :tilt
