I do believe one of my two new precious babies that are just four weeks old has two bot flies warbles on him with poss others to come.
I have never had to deal with these critters before in my 7 years of rehabbing so a little guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Here are pics I just took tonight of the two bumps I feel are warbles growing inside my little baby --is he at risk due to his young age?
Now I will BREATHE while I wait for the WISE ELDERS of this SITE to HELP ME and MY BABIES!!

FYI --Dipper was found on the ground laying in water a week ago, cold and wet.

Poor precious baby! I have one now 5 weeks old with 2 warbles on her back. I am just keeping an eye on them for now. I do not like to remove bot-flys if they are not interfering with body functions. If baby can eat, see, pee/poop with no problem then just leave them alone. It is very hard to just let them stay there, always makes my skin crawl-ugh!

Maybe a boost of nutrition will help ease the burden. Removing the bot larva is pretty traumatic, so as long as they're not really 'harming' the baby by making it hard to eat, breathe, etc, it's best to let them mature and drop out.

When they do emerge..... will they be larva or full fledged Bot Fly (with wings and all)?

The length of time the larva spends in the host (including in the pupa form) is about 3 weeks.

It will form a pupa (cocoon) and then the pupa will drop out when it is ready. You'll have a big hole/pocket left over from it.

Not really, just that it has reached a certain age/size. Yeah, got a little one here with one, it moved location but is still there-It is driving me crazy, I don't know how the squirrels stand them! When people get one all they want is for it to be removed-ugh-nasty things.

Its been about 10 days since I posted about DIPPER having having 2 botflies on his back and
I wanted to post a few pics to show every one how they progress in appearance in case some
one might want to look at for future reference..... they are starting to have drainage.

They are bigger in size, have entrance hole, with drainage. (10 days)

Just thought you would like some more info. Kona's bot fly warble came out tonight. His wound right before looked like the one on your baby's side so that one is probably any day now. The one on the neck I would guess has another week or so. Here are some pictures of it. I will get pictures of the hole left behind tomorrow. It was pretty rough on him so I wanted to give him some time after I irrigated to flush out any remaining gunk.

I feel for the poor wild life that has to deal with this ailment on their own. (my little baby is already starting to cry a little and it breaks my heart). :Love_Icon

The larva secures itself with two anal hooks, secreting an antibiotic into its burrow, which staves off competing bacteria and fungi. :thumbsup :thumbsup

farrelli

I have to think think that it does both, as competition/compromisation from infection of the host would impede its survival, and I think we all know how prone to self-mutilation squirrels are, so if it even itched a bit, squirrels would be digging it out all the time. As it happens, they seem to suffer it without complaint.

I think the best thing is just to leave the bots alone and let them hatch. Then you can clean and treat the wounds with a topical antibiotic cream. They should heal up really quickly.

Just another point of view...I pull mine. I believe it's hard on the baby's health to endure these parasites. You have to wait until they're big enough to get a firm grip with a pair of hemostats (much better then tweezers). You open the hemostats and go into the warble with them on both sides of the larvae. Then close them and pull straight out. I then flush with diluted chlorhexidine,an antiseptic that has been more effective then betadine for this purpose. Flush once daily to avoid infection. Try to keep it from scabbing over until it's healed. If it seems infected do a course of septra (antibiotic). I've had great success with this method over the 9 years of rehabbing. I actually pull for other local rehabbers as I have a reputation as the "botfly queen". How's that for something to be proud of...LOL.

Ok - I am getting quit concerned about Dipper...... he's had the bot fly for 3-4 weeks now and while the two bugs have shown
themselves a few times I am not so sure they are ready to come out any time soon and from what I have been reading about
them online it could actually take any where from 5-12 weeks for the warble to emerge in its pupa stage.

The bot fly on Dippers back is starting to look a nasty red and it has a foul smell to it --and when I weighed Dipper tonight he had
actually lost 5 grams, going from 110 grams to 105 grams, all while his cage mate put on weight: going from 85 to 105 grams.

I am thinking I might need to pull these bot fly for Dippers over all health needs..... What do you think?

BTW --no one told me these ugly creatures ate their host inner tissues while inside. :pissed :yuck

I wish there was a way to get them off my releases. I know they all have at least 3-4 warbles on each. Some of them I've counted 5 or more. Houdini dropped one the other day while I was outside giving them their daily nut treats. He came for a nut, saw the larvae looking ready to come out, Houdini came back for the second nut, he had a hole where the larvae was.
I looked all over the ground to find where it had dropped so I could get rid of it..... Well I found it, already attracting flies and ants. Ugh, I flushed that sucker down the toilet.

So glad litter Dipper's ordeal is over. Must be so rough on such a young one. Good job momma for sticking through it without puking!:thumbsup

If you have some betadine or can get some, flushing with a VERY diluted solution of water and betadine is probably a good idea. Pus and odor is a bit worrisome, but not sure if it is normal with these yucky bots.

I was wanting to know if it was normal for it to smell when the warble was in the body of the squirrel. Since the warble has been removed the smell is no longer around. It has been about 17 hours since the warble has been removed and I noticed some pus coming out of the upper hole on the back when the squirrel moved (the hole with the previous smell), so I gentle squeezed it and more pus came out..... then I cleaned it up and put some Neosporin on it.

I will have my husband pick up some Betadine on his way home from work tonight.

Here is something to think about before using Neosporin:

I now realize my response may have sounded a bit rude, it wasn't meant to be :)

However, I think you brought up an important discussion point when you said a lot of people on this board use Neosporin. I actually just did a search and found a surprising number of threads in which this was recommended for rodents. This worries me, because even though I might not know much about what is safe to use on rodents, I certainly know that Neosporin is NOT safe.

The main problem is the neomycin it contains. When used on shallow scrapes on humans there are seldom any problems (except allergic reactions in some people). However, when delivered parenterally (in deep wounds or through injection) nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) and ototoxicity (ear damage) generally ocurrs. This damage is usually irreversable. This is why Neosporin and other "tripple antibiotic" ointments always say not to use on deep or puncture wounds.

Now with rodents this is even more of a problem. Because Neosporin is formulated for human needs, this makes it several times more potent when used on small mammals. When applied to a "surface wound" on a squirrel, the effects on the animal are as harmful as if you were to inject it into your blood with a syringe! If the thought of the squirrel suffering tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, and acute tubular necrosis isn't enough to spook you; if the squirrel licks and ingests some of the ointment, it can wipe out all bacteria in the intestines - causing a whole load of nutritional problems.

Next time you hear someone say they are using Neosporin (or any "triple antibiotic), tell them Ken said not to :shakehead. A better thing to use would be Polysporin, which is the same thing but with only the polypeptides (bacitracin and polymyxin) which are much safer then neomycin (which is an aminoglycoside).

Again, I don't mean to come across as a mean know-it-all or anything, just want to make sure people are aware of problems this common ointment can cause, since our little critters don't always tell us they're having side effects :)

I've not had any experience with bots in a squirrel in my custody, but I have been watching my wilds with them very closely. They all come to my deck in the morning and evenings to take treats from my hand, so I can always get a good look at them. The bots have emerged this week, and none of my squees have pus. One dropped its larvae on my deck in the morning :eek and had a gaping, bloody looking hole. By evening the hole was closed and the next morning it was dry and flat. All of my wilds have healed nicely with no signs of drainage whatsoever. I think you need to irrigate the hole with a very weak Betadine solution and watch it very closely, and you may want to start AB's just to be on the safe side. What an ordeal for you both!!!! This had to be so taxing on his little system and hard for you to watch. I'm hoping little Dipper is on the road to a swift recovery.

I would flush as suggested and definitely start a course of abs. especially is you are seeing pus.:thumbsup

IMO I would hold off on ABs a few days. Kona and Cooper both had nasty drainage for a day or two but I flushed it out with diluted betadine solution and even had some come out that looked like cottage cheese. they are both recovering very well and wounds look great. I think what you are seeing is the baggage left behind by the bot.

He does shake a lot when walking like the holes are a bother to him now --did yours do that?

He looks great! Dipper sans bot! :thumbsup If the exit hole is no longer producing any pus/waste than it is probably fine and should close up in a few days.

No more Neosporin. It can cause Vertigo and tinnitus in rodents.

Funny that you post this, because while I did think abs would be the course of action, I looked in the book and it says, "Most of the times the wounds heal, requiring no treatment. At times these pockets can become infected and require treatment."
So perhaps waiting another day may be the way to go, see if it looks better on its own.:dono

Thats what I was thinking too...... as there was no pus at their next feeding.
I will keep on eye it and if I see the pus return I will start the meds.

Oh yes, I can dose the abs.
Do you need this broken down, or is it in suspension?

OK so you have a 500mg pill that you want broken down for dosing, correct?

Just wanted to add....... the warble site on Dipper's side never returned to its flatten stage and today while feeding him
I squeezed on the bump and it pooped, oozing out yellow pus and blood --an abscess left over from the once infected
warble hole that smelled real bad while they were in him.

He has been treated with Betadine and is doing well...... playing and eating as nothing has changed. :)

My very first squirrel I ever had was also found on the group and had two bit flies. He was surviving with them but to me not growing/thriving as most I had seen his age. The vet tried a oil drop to put in the opening wound and as time progressed, he still was just surviving. We chose to remove the boy fly. Within days he was SO MUCH more lively and immediately you could see a change in over all better health-as well as growing. Just my personal experience. They are parasites....

Stupid phone keeps correcting the "botfly" to bit fly and boy fly. Apologies
