On Monday at 1:00 PM, security notified me there was large bird not moving on the sidewalk of our workplace. I went outside and noticed an injury to her left eye and right eye looked partially closed. It would not move and there was a buildup of feces in area under her and guard later told me she was there since his shift (6 am), so she could have been there even all night previous. It would not fly or move much (although it could take a couple steps when touched)

I took it home and began the search for a rehabber but no one will take wild quails/doves unless their a baby.

I really didn't think it would survive night. I did happen to have dove/quail food so I put some in her cage (not a male because there is no head plume). I also placed some water nearby. It survived Monday and Tuesday and I suspect it may have ate some food but not positive but I am still finding fresh feces although she is still mostly standing in one spot but I have made it move when cleaning cage, so I know it can walk but not sure how much sight if any is left.

The only options I have is to keep her comfortable or set her loose somewhere (I won't do that because I know it would be placing her in harms way which I promised her when I took her home I would not do as I know she was probably attacked and traumatized).

I don't suspect she will live much longer so I just want to make her comfortable and appreciate any suggestions.

She does not appear to be suffering, no shaking, no noise whatsoever from her, just perfectly still most of the time. If I put my arm in her cage, she does not react, so I don't think she even sees it.

I am just guessing it is a Japanese Quail, at first I thought it was just a regular dove until I looked at it closer.

Oh, poor girl! So sad. I'm glad she has you, Tom.

I believe she's a Mourning Dove - or some kind of dove, anyway. Psychobird will know.

Do you have a cat carrier? If not, maybe put a t-shirt or something over the cage with a little area you can peek in just to give her more dark so she doesn't feel as vulnerable. Also, you could put something on the bottom of the cage like old tshirts, fleece. They'll get dirty fast but use something you can throw out. It'll be a little more comfy for her. I usually let the fleece wrinkle in 'ridges' so the birds who aren't strong enough to perch can rest their feet on some kind of fleecy 'perch'. Also, I bunch the fleece a bit in one corner and some birds like to rest against that. :dono

I hope Psychobird can help you and your bird! :grouphug

Thanks FireWeed, I originally had her in a small carrier and I moved her to this long cage in case she wanted to walk. I also thought of putting her in a regular box (since she cannot fly and barely ever walks) but the drawback to both is their very hard to clean and then I would have to disturb her when I did. I have placed soft things next to her but she ignores them ( you might see one old tshirt on left). I am thinking of visiting petsmart in next couple days and see if I can find something more suitable.

Thanks, I have been keeping in a darker area and only keep the lights on a few hours a day.

Yes, young mourning dove
If you can get her up here I will take her
They eat seed
Water needs to be at least as deep as her beak
Try dipping her beak in water to see if she will drink
Can warm some petite peas frozen peas in warm water and open her beak, put one pea in let her swallow and repeat
She can probably eat 20-30
As you give her more and more you will see her crop fill up
She really needs medical attention, that eye looks terrible and she must be in pain
Can you get her up to Gloucester?
Heating pad would help her out too

:thankyou SammysMom, she is good looking bird

:thankyou psychobird, I had originally thought it was a mourning dove but I have many of them (doves) that feed in my front area and it looked a bit darker in color and I thought maybe a quail as they don't always fly when you get close.

- I have water that is about 1 1/2 inches deep to accommodate her long peak as I know they use it like a straw.

- I did try to make her drink some water but she got very stressed so I have up on it but I have water there. I will try your method again though

- I do have dove seed nearby and I am quite sure she ate some yesterday based on droppings/scattered seed nearby.

- Interesting about the peas, I will also try that but as nervous as she is I am not sure it will work.

- Temperature seems to be working well where I have and no shivering at all. I do keep cage covered most of the time.

- When I first read Gloucester I got happy as that is my street name but Gloucester, MA. would not be possible for me as I have my own eye issues, I can make about 60 minutes of driving and that is it (but I really appreciate the offer).

I forgot to ask, she tends to always have her bad eye facing the side of the cage that is open to look thru, does this sound normal (if her left eye can see)? Her left eye always looks closed or mostly closed to me (not injured though) so I am wondering if both eyes are actually bad.

I talk to her and sometimes she will move her head a bit but not much, I had a small music box next to her cage just to try to stimulate her or relax her and she did seem to respond with her head moving a but more when it was playing but I only kept it on for a couple minutes as I didn't want to annoy her either.

P.S. - thanks for the clarification CritterMom, yes it is Michigan

Oh sorry! I thought Farrelli had the dove! I just quickly read the post and replied
She needs antibiotics and pain reliever
She looks darker an more mottled because she is a juvenile
They are def very very high stress birds
Only do the peas if she isn't eating on her own
She may be too sick with infection and pain to eat much
As long as she is still pooping she is eating
What city in mi are you in
I have a fb friend that lives there mbe you two are close to each other
Got a lot going on here
Check back in a little while

Hi Psychobird, I did talk to rehabber that you provided, it turns out she is not real close, so she provided me with several other names and numbers of people closer who might be able to help. So far, no calls back from those people and one of them is ill and no longer takes in sick birds. If I get no calls back (or none can help me), I still have the option of driving bird to first rehabber's place (although not quite sure how to get there). I will keep thread updated, if/when things change. Thanks again

:thankyou for the note FireWeed, much appreciated support and advise.

:thankyou Bravo, it was a pleasure taking care of such a precious bird

:thankyou Psychobird, the rehabber (TS) you told me of was such a nice/sweet and helpful person. Ultimately, her leads led me to finding someone to take the dove in. TS was really the only one willing to take the bird in but it was not an easy drive for me and my own eyes are having some issues so I tried to find someone closer. I was just ready to make the drive to TS when I got a hold of someone she had gave me a number to. That person was at capacity too and recommended I call a animal hospital she knew of, that place was at capacity but they recommended I call Rochester Hills Center for Animal Care (Humane Society Wildlife division). I spoke to the wildlife staff and they said they would look her over and take her in. I took her there and had a very good impression of the facility there (and did leave a donation for the care). I did talk to TS a few minutes ago and she took down the information and phone of the facility for her future referrals too. The number is 248-852-7424 It is not 100% I will be able to get a status of how things turn for the dove but I will try.

Awe Tom, what a huge heart you have taking in this little dove.
Glad that you found some place closer to take her/him.
With the time of year, it may be next to impossible to get an update, but
I'm sure they will do all they can for this little one.

:thankyou everyone who posted here, helped me find rehabbers (special thanks to Psychobird) and wished the best for the young dove. I spoke to technician from Rochester Hills Wildlife department a bit ago and they had to put her down, she was suffering with a virus that effected both eyes and caused the one to erupt. RIP Little Dove.
