My two new little guys, Paulie and Mick, came in very dehydrated. Been doing homemade pedialyte since yesterday afternoon (also gave sub-q's last night). During the night, they began to have diarrhea, it is yellow and just smeary. Normally I would slowly begin transitioning onto formula (gm), but with the diarrhea, not sure if I should hold off until tomorrow and see how they are doing? Never had one have diarrhea while just on fluids, assuming it is what they had inside from mom and they were w/o mom for some time. So, should I start diluted gm/yogurt and continue fluids (in between meals or by sub-q) now or give it until later or tomorrow? Or should I try giving some dia-stat now? I know I should 'know' what to do, but I have been having some memory crap going on and well, I guess I just want to check what others would do.

I think I would start the transition to formula slowly and re-hydrate with fluids in between meals at 5% of their body weight. If they can not tolerate that much in their tummies then I would sub-q for sure at least 3x per day. The transition to formula will give them the needed calories too. Just my opinion. (Boy oh boy, do I get that memory thing!!)
Hope all goes well.:Love_Icon

Thank you, was thinking that, but after this past week (and very limited sleep) my brain is not 'booting up'....:crazy

@pappy -- I would start the GM and yogurt for sure. The yogurt will help with their tummies. Are you noticing a foul smell b/c coccidia isn't uncommon as lilidukes suggested. A feces sample taken to your vet would confirm. Since they already have diarrhea, I wouldn't want to try ABs without confirmation. JMO...

@virginia -- Sub-q is subcutaneous fluids. They are fluids given under the skin but not in the muscle (IM) or in a vein (IV)!

No foul smell (done the coccidia thing before, never forget that smell!) No, I think it just going w/o for so long and it was just stuck in there, if that makes sense. I just made up a fresh batch of gm/yogurt, so going to start that, diluted and see how they do. I can always get a fecal checked but don't think ab's are needed, at least not right now. Thanks guys. They will be happy to have 'real food' I am sure! Oh, and Rocky began nibble rodent block last night, too! Adrianne was like 'I don't think so, get that thing away from me'...lol
